River Tweed River Report Week Ending 8th August 2020 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 8th August

After the good catches of last week, hopes were high for the continuation of the decent fishing of late. Catches remained steady over the week out with the 3ft dirty rise that came through on Wednesday which pretty much resulted in next to no fishing effort above Coldstream. The beats below Coldstream managed to get some fishing in before the rise reached them and manage to land some fish. The latter half of the week was extremely challenging at bright sunshine with temperatures into the mid 20’s not helping the fishing. There is some quite severe thunderstorms forecast at the start of the week so keep an eye on the river levels and be careful out on the river.

Floy tagging resumed with the reopening of the river in May in order to look at recapture rates of fish throughout the catchment. To date there have been 190 Salmon and 10 Sea Trout tagged by boatman from Tweedhill to Gledswood. Although the numbers are lower than what would have been tagged were it not for COVID-19, so far there have been 10 confirmed recaptures – nine Salmon and one Sea Trout. The distance that the recaptured fish had travelled since being caught for the first time appears to have varied greatly. One Sea Trout tagged at Lower Birgham on the 5th March was recaptured on the 1st July at Upper Mertoun, while one Salmon caught in early March at Carham was caught on the 21st May only 100 yards further upstream. The furthest upstream recapture was a Salmon at Holylee in June. Unfortunately the tag number was not recorded so where it was tagged remains uncertain, but the colour of the fish would suggest that it would have been tagged in the early spring. Tagging will continue throughout the rest of the season so it will be interesting to see how many have been recaptured by the end of November. If you catch a tagged fish then please take a note of the tag number, this can be made easier by taking a photo of the tag. To report a tagged fish please contact the Tweed Foundation on 01896 848 277 or the Head Fishery Officer on 07884 230 045.

The River Tweed Salmon Fishing Museum will be officially opened by Her Grace the Duchess of Roxburghe and Sir Gareth Edwards at 6pm on Thursday 3rd September 2020 in the Town Hall, The Square, Kelso.

Lower Pavilion landed 2 Salmon and 7 Sea Trout on Wednesday with Mr Robert Lamont, owner of the Kingknowe Hotel and his guest were among the fish. In the blazing hot sun on Saturday Mr David Burns persevered and landed a 7lb Salmon. Dryburgh Upper had a good start to the week landed 3 with Matt Roberts landed a nice fresh grilse. Fishing at Birgham Dub, 84 year old Mr Walter Britton landed a lovely 12lber, his friend Stuart also had a lovely 12lber. Not to be out done his son managed to land a superb big fresh fish. Mr Simon Furniss fishing on the Lower Tweed managed 13 to his own rod for the week, including a cracking fish of 25lbs.

Late report from last week from Alan Spence president BDAA water on the Whiteadder. 3 fish last week from our water all on 29th. Billy Robson had his first of the season. I myself had 2 from beat 2 one fresh at 5 pound the other old at 9. These were 2 and 3 for season both on my own fly Hazels Fancy making that 306 on this pattern since 2007.

Above Kelso 66 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 127 were reported and below Coldstream 123 were reported. With the best fishing being at Tillmouth where 22 were landed. Ladykirk 21, Junction 19 and the Floors beats had 23 between them, also picked away during the week.

Waltham and Dritness Beat reports yet more water this week, topped out at around 4fton Wednesday, moving a lot of resident fish, then the hot weather we managed 7 Salmon/Grilse this week. Best fish 18lbs. Lucky rods were, Ron Martin 2 (two fish) Jack Weightman 1, Dave Lorimer 1, Mike Wood 1, Martin Inkster 1 and Billy Robson 1.

Tiptoe fishing this week we had Father and Son duo stayed in The Orchard Cottage week beginning 3rd August. They had a productive 1st part of the week, but as the week progressed the water became lower. On Monday they landed a 7lb Salmon, 4lb Grilse and a 3lb Sea Trout in the Long Flats Pool then on Saturday Mr Nick Wilkinson landed an 8lb Salmon in the Pulpit Pool.

316 Salmon and 74 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 25lb Salmon caught on the Birgham Dub beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well back to work this week after having 2 weeks off. It’s always nice to have some time off but you do look forward to getting back on the beat and seeing what’s happened? What the rivers doing? Who caught? What did they catch? How big? How many? Luckily most of this info is available online daily! But it’s good to look at the catch book to find out what they were caught on and who caught what.

You could tell that it was a good week previous to this (15 salmon and 1 sea trout) as the rods last week were messaging or ringing almost on a daily basis to find out what’s going on. Which is great, shows how much they follow the catches and reports and gets them fairly excited about their prospects of their week!

But this week started well with 6 fish caught in the first 2 days and then we lost Wednesday to the high dirty water. But like any rise in the water the hopes of fresh and lots of fish! But unfortunately we struggled Thursday and Friday. Seeing quite a few fish at times but not getting the hook ups that we hoped or anticipated?! Finally on Saturday the fish became a little more obliging and we landed 3 fish. One very fresh grilse and 2 other older fish. But we saw plenty running and had reports of fresh fish being caught around us. Let’s hope that this week stays pretty settled and we can get some of those fish slowing down and a bit more in the mood to take. But who knows what the weather man has planned for us. Tight lines and remember to be safe and respect beats covid 19 measures they have in place. Tight lines. Tom

On Upper North Wark, The beat remains closed however we are aiming to reopen on the 1st of September. Any enquiries or booking requests please call Martin on 07825334427.

If you’re fancying a wee trip to the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso after your fishing if you would like to take advantage to the Eat Out To Help Out Scheme which is available Monday to Wednesday each week currently. Please book in advance to take advantage of this by calling 01573224777.

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 10” and the water temperature is 62.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Dryburgh Upper, Rutherford, Pedwell and Horncliffe beat’s should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, A few showers in the morning possibly sharp, becoming isolated in the afternoon as sunny spells develop. The winds will continue to be light. The outlook is likely to be unsettled with frequent showery conditions. Tuesday will be cloudy with occasional showers that could turn thundery. Wednesday looks to start on a cloudy note but should be largely dry throughout and some sunny spells will develop. A cloudy day on Thursday with further showers pushing in, which could again turn heavy and thundery.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are nearly at summer level so a floating line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats with Copper Cascade, Black Frances, Gledswood Shrimp, Editor and Ghillie Flies are all capable to tempting fish on size 8-12 dressed hooks or ¼” – ½” tubes. Great time of the season for giving the Sunray Shadow a go to. On the spinning front, the flying c and toby should be worth a go.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
