River Tweed River Report Week Ending 15th August 2020 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 15th August

I would like to start the report by congratulating a good friend Mr Andy Britton on landing his first Scottish salmon of over 30lbs. Andy was fishing on a private beat last week and landed a superb fish weighed at 32lbs with 3 witnesses to the weight and some good photos taken the superb cock fish was released on its way. Andy landed the fish on 12lb nylon on a size 12 fly of his own creation using the fabulous fly tying materials from Tay Salmon Fly. Absolutely fantastic Sir well done.

The conditions were a bit up and down last week with the return of the east wind at times making casting a bit more awkward at time with some colour coming in with the bigger rise midweek. The weather remains unsettled looking for next week so it could be a very similar story.

If you catch a tagged fish then please take a note of the tag number, this can be made easier by taking a photo of the tag. To report a tagged fish please contact the Tweed Foundation on 01896 848 277 or the Head Fishery Officer on 07884 230 045.

The River Tweed Salmon Fishing Museum will be officially opened by Her Grace the Duchess of Roxburghe and Sir Gareth Edwards at 6pm on Thursday 3rd September 2020 in the Town Hall, The Square, Kelso.

Above Kelso 85 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 142 were reported and below Coldstream 134 were reported. With the best fishing being at Tillmouth where 31were landed. Lees 20, Tweedhill 19 and Birgham Dub 19 also picked away during the week.

Mr Robin Aspinal landed a nice fish from Hempseedford on the Junction, Mr Steve Robins landed 2 from the Lees both fish at 10lbs with the fish coming from the Back of the Wall and the Glide. He them landed a superb 15lb fish from the Shot on Upper Floors on a Durris Shrimp. Mr Alexander Trifitt landed a 7lb fish on a Blue Doctor Size 10 fly from Tay Salmon Fly. Mr Alan Morrison landed a good fish from Horncliffe.

Waltham and Dritness Beat reports Another decent week considering the water, we still have fish showing in the pools and there are some fresh fish around, we caught nine salmon this week almost all were fresh including one of 22lb. Lucky rods were, Dave Lorimer 4 (Four Fish), Mike Wood 3 and Mike Dodd 2.

Tiptoe fishing reports “A quiet week with not a lot of fishing effort hopefully with this bit of rain on the forecast we can get some water and hopefully some more fish landed. We have 2 Rods available Friday and Saturday this week please call Lucy on 07974 416692.

361 Salmon and 23 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 19lb Salmon caught on the Birgham Dub beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well, back on the river with 2 boatmen this week as we start our autumn schedule and to be back up and running at full capacity. The beginning of this week was very frustrating, seeing plenty of fish and getting half-hearted pulls on the fly, but not staying on long enough or hard enough to set the hook. But on days where your contacting fish and seeing fish you are always fishing with the hope and expectation that the next cast could be the one! Then the water became unsettled in the middle of the week and set us back a day or so. But we ended up landing 5 salmon. Some fresh, some older. But mostly grilse and some on the fly. Lauren from Morridge Hall (Maxton) had a red letter day on Friday and added to the fish she caught on Thursday with all 3 salmon on Friday and her first fish caught on the fly from the nether stream late on in the afternoon. Certainly a good day to remember. Looking forward to this week, the weather forecast looks slightly unsettled and could be similar to this week. But we will turn up on Monday and see what the weather is actually like... as weather forecasters have been known to get it wrong. So I find it a lot easier to take each day as it comes, deal with the conditions we have on the day and to get stuck in and get some fish on the board hopefully! Stay safe, be responsible and tight lines. Tom

On Upper North Wark, The beat remains closed however we are aiming to reopen on the 1st of September. Any enquiries or booking requests please call Martin on 07825334427.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are nearly at summer level so a floating line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats with Copper Cascade, Black Frances, Gledswood Shrimp, Editor and Ghillie Flies are all capable to tempting fish on size 8-12 dressed hooks or ¼” – ½” tubes. Great time of the season for giving the Sunray Shadow a go to. On the spinning front, the flying c and toby should be worth a go.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
