River Tweed River Report Week Ending 1st May
A slight
improvement this week in the catches with not much change in the water
conditions, a small 1 inch lift mid-week may have encouraged some movement. A
bit more encouraging to have reported quite a few fish covered in long tailed
sea lice being caught. The prospect of rain tomorrow should bring a much needed
freshen up to the river and clean out the algae that has been building up over
the last few weeks.
Fishing
at Bemersyde Mr Neil Sayers landed an 8lb Sea Liced fish in the Boatpool.Mr Tim
Whiteley had success in the Stream on a Gledswood Shrimp Size 10. Mr Dave Gray
was amongst the fish again this week landed one from the Top Corbie on a Blue Gledswood
Shrimp size 10 and landed another on Gledswood. Mr Colin Hewitt got off the
mark for the season at Rutherford. Mr Alan Morrison landed an old springer from
the Slap at Upper Floors. Fishing at the Junction Mr John Taylor had success in
the Willow Hole while Mr Paul Little landed a 9lb Sea Trout from the Hawthorn. Mr
Nick Measham landed a lover fish at Lower North Wark. Mr James Brymer landed 2 at the Lees, one of
which was from the Glide. Mr Hugh Newton landed a fish from the Iron Gate Point
Pool on West Learmouth. Mr Jonathan Lane landed 2 fresh long tailed licers from
Ladykirk on a ½” Ghillie tube fly. On Waltham and Dritness Mr Ron Martin and Mr
Mike Wood both landed fish with the biggest weighing 12lbs.
Above Kelso 32 fish were reported, Between Kelso and
Coldstream 28 were reported and below Coldstream 23 was reported. With the best
fishing being on the Makerstoun beat’s where 10 springers were landed.
83 Salmon and 6 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 15lb Salmon
caught on the Boleside and Birgham Dub beats.
If you catch a tagged

It was
the end of an era this week as Mr Iain Wilson left his role within the Border
Gunroom. I would personally like to wish Iain all the best in his new ventures
and look forward to his continued contributions to the river reports. Iain
released this statement today.
As from Monday, and
after 21years i will no longer work at Borders Gunroom, St. Boswells. This was
not a decision I took lightly, but I it was time to move on, and I have made
the decision to go self-employed, and to continue doing full time, what I was
doing part time over the last few years. I have a few regular gardens that I maintain,
and have also been contacted to do some stand in Ghillieing and Guiding on the
river, and this has been very enjoyable and rewarding for both the clients and
myself. I am also available to Chaperone
any young/elderly person who is fishing or shooting, and requires assistance. I
continue to take clients out deer stalking and pigeon shooting throughout the
year, and still have a few days available if anyone is interested. I would like
to take this opportunity to thank all the shop customers, ghillies, gamekeepers
and deer stalkers that I have met and some have become good friends with, over
the last 21 years. Your custom and support were greatly appreciated, and I will
miss catching up with the latest news etc., and hopefully we can stay in touch,
and maybe do some business together in the future. I am looking forward to this
new chapter in my life and if anyone would like to get in touch for advice on
fishing, fishing tackle and fly tying, deer stalking etc., or just for a chat
here are my contact details. Mobile. 07736903379 Email. borderstalker@gmail.com Website. borderstalker.com
Thank you all for
your friendship over the years, and hopefully we will meet up whilst fishing or
shooting again, somewhere, sometime and have a catch up.
All the best.
Iain.
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Every week starts with new hope, fresh ideas and the potential to be the best week of the year. And when on Monday afternoon we saw fish showing we started to believe things could be starting happen. Then right on cue we hooked played and landed a really nice fresh fish up in the Cauld Pool at the top of the beat. Was this going to be the start of things to come? Or maybe not, as we found out by the end of the week. Apart from the very odd sightings of fish, that Monday fish was all we had to add to our catch figures. Hard to believe that we saw so few, when fish were caught above and below that were fresh and even liced fish. Why are they running so hard? When are they running? A few years ago we had very similar conditions and we could have sworn a pipeline had be laid through our beat, affectionately known as ‘the birgham bypass....’ to take the fish past without sight of any. Maybe they are running first and last night? So many questions, not many answers. But fantastic to see fish spread throughout the system.
Well
tomorrow’s another week and as the start of this report, we will start with
fresh hope, new ideas and it does have the potential of being the best week of
the year! Fingers crossed. Tight lines Tom”
On
Upper North Wark, very lightly fished this week as our rods struggled to find accommodation.
Bit of rain due Monday here’s hoping for a lift. Any enquiries or booking
requests please call Martin on 07825334427.
Lees Head Boatman Mr
Malcolm Campbell reports “Only two fish landed
for the week both by James Brymer, there was a fair bit of action with odd
pulls and boils to the sunray in particular, as last week some days you saw
them and others not, it really is a case of right place right time at the
moment. Hopefully this rain forecast on Monday will give us a lift of water
that is badly needed. For a full report go to Lees page on Tweedbeats and see
Malcolms fishing reports”
Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Mr Lee
Ross reports “Not much change from last week. Still sitting at a steady 4"
and no fish to report, with the bright low conditions not many people have been
on the river this week, but there has been fish spotted on the lower parts of
the beat. Next
week looks more promising as we have a big band of rain coming Tomorrow so that
should freshen things up a bit and hopefully persuade some silver into the
system, so fingers crossed this week with extra water and higher temperatures
forecast things could change for the better”

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 4” and the water temperature is 46.
At this
stage in the report I would normally have my suggested beats to book for the
week ahead, however with all the Covid Restrictions in place and each beat
using their own guidelines I will refrain from suggestions until the river is
opened back up for fishing a bit more normally.
The
forecast this coming week, Tomorrow morning, outbreaks of rain
will continue to push in, these building to become persistent. Rain will then
be prolonged and heavy throughout the afternoon. Winds will also strengthen.
Tuesday will be cloudy with a few sunny spells. There will also be a few
showers that will be wintry on higher ground. Wednesday will see more sunshine
but there will also be a few showers, wintry on higher ground. It will continue
breezy and cool. Thursday will see a mix of sunshine and cloud with a few
showers, wintry on higher ground.
As always
I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make
this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or
photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427
or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Look at
what to bring for the week ahead, well this really depends how much rain falls
tomorrow, I would highly recommend speaking to your ghillie before packing the
bag to see what to bring. Floating with assorted poly leaders should suffice on
most beats. Gledswood Shrimp, Tritton Shrimp, Ghillie, Sunray Shadow and Aurora
Cascade are all capable to tempting fish on around ½”- ¾” tubes, dressed flies
are now worth a go more often in a size 8-12s. On the spinning front Rapala,
Flying C and Toby should bring results.
As always
come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If
you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out
www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
