River Tweed River Report - Pre Season 2022 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report - Pre Season

With the 2021 season now behind us, which was largely disappointing with the hot weather and months of low water not helping at all. Fingers crossed for a wetter season this year and lots of fish about.

So far the winter has been quite mild with temperatures getting up to 14 degrees some weeks mixed in amongst some frosty weather and occasional days of snow on the hill tops. There has been quite a few bad storms over the winter and this caused havoc with many trees down and some long periods for some without power.

On Upper North Wark we have employed a trainee Ghillie to join our established team on the beat. We are really looking forward to helping a young person get a start on the river and hopefully a long and successful career in the industry. Keep an eye on our pages for future updates.

Mr Jamie Moorhead has taken over the role as secretary for BDAA Whiteadder. Jamie will be providing the river reports and has some new ideas within the club. He reports “We are hoping to get the BDAA fishers to start reporting trout catches to me, it is a new idea and is voluntary to report them but hopefully plenty of anglers join in especially as it's just a trial period to see how well it works or if it would be too much for the secretary job” Permits are now at all outlets. Details on permits and outlets page on the new web site www.whiteadderfishing.co.uk

Looking towards the new season with the mild winter there might be a chance of springers above Kelso but the best chance of connecting with these majestic fish will be in the Kelso to Coldstream area given the current levels.

Today 31st January the river is running gin clear with the height 9” at Sprouston and water temperature 37.

The first two weeks of the season are fly only, more than likely it will be sinking fly lines with biggish tube flies. The famous quote of what fly to use.....Black and Yellow, if that fails try the Yellow and Black! Patterns to try Tosh, Posh Tosh, Monkey, Spring Ghillie and Willie Gunn will all tempt fish if they are in the pools. Best advice for early spring fishing is perseverance, keep your fly/lure in the water and you never know the moment the line will tighten and battle commences.

The forecast this coming week, Tomorrow will see blustery showers mixed with sunny spells. A mild day for the time of year. Another windy day, with strong gusts likely in the afternoon. Wednesday will be cloudy with spells of light rain at times. Turning drier in the afternoon, but the odd spot of rain still possible. On Thursday a band of heavy rain will sweep through from the north-west, followed by clear spells in the evening, and showers overnight. Friday will see a mix of sunshine and blustery showers, these turning wintry over higher ground.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

I would like to wish everyone tight lines for the coming season, stay safe and make memories.
