River Tweed River Report Week Ending 9th June
The week started with very dirty water from the
thunder storms at the end of last week. As the water only rose about 1ft 6” as the
river dropped back the colour really lingered as the low water struggled to
push the colour through, was nearly Wednesday before you could see 2ft into it
below Kelso. The never ending east winds continued again this week, especially
in the afternoons where it seemed to pick up a tad and make a bit of a nuisance
of itself for casting.
The conditions this week played its part in a
lower catch but it was nice to see some more sea trout start to be caught,
hopefully this is the start of a good run. We are hearing of increased number
of sea trout appearing in the Nith area so fingers crossed it’s the same on the
east coast.
Fishing at Middle Mertoun “Team V Fly” fished to the
conditions are managed to land 5 fish for the 3 days, highlight of the trip was
a First salmon for Jake Mulholland and
he made an excellent job of casting and playing it himself a most accomplished
12 year old sportsman. Very well done Jake.
Fishing at Mertoun Mr Nick Craigs and Mr Iain Wilson of the
Borders Gunroon in St Boswells landed nice fish at the start of the week.
Dryburgh Upper had a better week with 5, Mr Neil Abson landed 2 at the end of
the week on the flying c.
46 Salmon and 8 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 15lb Salmon
caught on the Junction Beat.
Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “We
started off getting a fresh fish earlier in the week in fairly dirty conditions
after that filthy list last weekend but not much sign of any fish moving once
it settled. We did end the week with Mr Will Haggas making good use of some
short lived cloud cover and landing a nice 10lber from the Cottage Stream”
On
Upper North Wark, The rise in water wasn’t really enough for us to get a go,
the time the colour got back to anything like a good fishing colour we were
back of the gauge. Fishing remains priced at £25prpd for the whole of June.
Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “Monday was a
wash out, we landed 2 fish on Tuesday and lost 1 with another lost on Saturday.
A total of 14 rods fished for the week with very little fishing done after
lunch all week. Not a bad return for the hours fished. We have availability
this week and conditions are looking good for us at £45 it’s well worth a try”
Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling
Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder now at summer level
however there was still one fish at 8lb taken on Tuesday. Fish showing in
the river but badly in need of rain.”
The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3” and the water temperature
is 60.
Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Lower
Birgham, Ladykirk, Horncliffe and Tweedhill beats should have a chance of some
action this week, if there is any rise in water Upper North Wark at £25 per rod
per day could be a good shout.
The
forecast this coming week, a cloudy start on Tuesday but
there will be increasing amounts of sunshine. Dry for most, but a few showers
cannot be ruled out. A cool day for June. Wednesday will start off dry but a
band of rain will sweep eastwards, becoming heavy later on and winds will
increase too. Patchy rain on Thursday will clear east to leave sunny spells and
a scattering of showers. Very windy.

With water levels finally starting to drop in and water temperatures
starting to rise Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most
fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 10 to 12 should
be the order of the day, I would suggest
are Copper Cascade, Stenton Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp, Kylie Shrimp, Editor and
Sunray Shadow should bring success. If you like to give the spinner a go,
Rapala, Toby or Flying C should bring results.
