River Tweed River Report Week Ending 14^th April

The week started with a high brownish water that wasn’t ideal but a few fish were caught. Tuesday saw the return of the North East winds which stayed with us until Saturday, making fishing conditions a bit tricky. There were reports of a Seal seen above Wark on Tuesday morning, which may have moved some fish further up the river towards the Junction. Given the water conditions we might have expected a few more fish caught, but as they say when the wind blows from the east the fish bite least. Hoping for better things this coming week with some warmer weather forecast after a windy start.

On Thursday Mt Jack Power from Cork fishing on the Tweed for the 1^st time landed a cracking 12lbs springer on the fly from Hempseedford ably assisted by boatman Pud Murray.

66 Salmon and 7 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught on the Birgham Dub Beat.

Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “Another cold and fairly quiet week apart from an exciting half hour for the Beresford-Davies lads, 13 year old Archie catching his 1^st salmon  then older brother Ollie 15, jumping into the boat while the sea was still warm to take his fish off the same lie, well done boys, you’re the future”

Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels reports “4 nice fish to 12lbs, 1^st half of the week, couldn’t get a pull 2^nd half, water colour didn’t help Friday and Saturday”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A tough week with the wind making things almost impossible at times and inbetween reminding the rods they’re having fun while been lashed in the face by rain. We did manage to land 3 springers, one of them a very nice 17lber.

On Upper North Wark we had a good start to the week landed 2 sea liced springers and a sea trout on the fly from the Mill Stream, Some other brief contacts were made along with a nice fish lost in the Dub on Wednesday on the fly. Water coloured up Friday and Saturday that made things a bit trickier.

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder finally settled down at 2ft.  Clean with slight tinge and in perfect condition for the start of next week. Fish seen running over the gauging station earlier this week by visiting anglers washed off Tweed but nothing reported caught so far. Rise in temperature might stop them running through over the next few weeks. Prospects looking better than so far this season.”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 9” and the water temperature is 44.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Lower Birgham, West Learmouth beats, with a few fish moving up past Kelso, the Upper Dryburgh beat should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, rather cloudy and windy on Tuesday with rain or drizzle at times, and it will feel rather cool in the fresh southerly winds. Any early rain on Wednesday will soon clear, with most of the day dry and sunny, although still rather breezy. It will be very mild. Thursday will be a fine and dry day with light southerly winds, and it will be rather warm.

Most beats will be fishing various sinking density lines with poly leaders on the end at the time of year it has to be a Black and Yellow and if that fails a Yellow and Black! Copper tubes around 1.5” should be the order of the day, some anglers are choosing to fish more with Aluminium tubes and using the fly line to get down. Pattern’s I would suggest are Black and Yellow (Tosh), Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp and Spring Ghillie should bring success. A wee personal favourite of mine is the Black and Yellow Samurai Shrimp at this time of year. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala, Toby and Devon Minnow fished nice and slow should bring results.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 31st March

The weather was very symbolic of Scotland this week with everything from warm sunny days to snow with increased north east winds towards the end of the week making fishing conditions rather chilly.

This was a week of what might have been with lots reports of fish hooked and lost. Junction rods had a horrible run of bad luck on Monday loosing nine fish, but things thankfully improved and they finished the week with 17 landed, Mr Geff Snelling, Mr John Richadson and Mr Neil Sayers been amongst the successful rods. Upper Hendersyde had 7 with Mr Dave Downie and Mr Colin Howard having success, Hendersyde also had 7 for the week, Birgham Dub had 6. Was good to see Lower Birgham get off the mark on Monday with a cracking sea liced 10lb fish on the fly.

Fish are starting to spread out above Kelso now with 23 fish been caught this week, We did hear of a fish been lost at Middle Pavillion and success been had on Lower Dryburgh, Rutherford and the best of the catches been made on the Floors beats with Upper landing 9 and Lower landing 3.

73 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught on the Upper North Wark Beat.

Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels reports “Nice week with 7 fish to 16lbs with 2-3 lost. It’s good to see a few more getting caught. Saturdays fish was badly damaged (Seal) hopefully survive”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A week of two halves. First 3 days we had some good but challenging fishing and the rods were rewarded with 6 springer’s and a sea trout. The biggest fish being 19lb caught on a black and yellow tube. The second half of the week saw the wind get up out of the north east and made things tough. The rods managed to land another springer making the total for the week 7 and a sea trout”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Caught 2 sea liced springer’s, first salmon for us this season, lost 1 aswell. Fingers crossed next week is as good if not better. Both fish were fin perfect and great to see in such fantastic condition”

On Upper North Wark, could’ve been a great week if we landed everything we hooked! 2 Fish landed for the week and 6 lost mostly on the fly with a couple hooked on the spinner. Best fish of the week was a cracking 18lb Sea Liced fish from the Mill Stream on the fly.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “Yet again another difficult week. No action on the Lees, we did see fish on Monday but nothing after that, they were obviously going through us as beats around Kelso were getting some, not loads but enough to keep the rods happy. I'm still waiting for the levels to drop in more and river temps to rise”

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Water levels at the end of last week were perfect and we had a couple of good days of weather alas no fish reported. More rain on Friday & Saturday has pushed the water level up again for the start of next week to over 2ft but if there is no more rain over the next 24 hours levels may drop in quickly for the start of next week.”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 8” and the water temperature is 39.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Upper North Wark beat, with a few fish moving up past Kelso, the Dryburgh beats should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, Changeable weather on Tuesday with some bright intervals but with showers too. Further showers and perhaps some more persistent rain expected overnight. Wednesday looks to be very unsettled and showery, but showers will ease later with Wednesday night dry, clear and cold. Thursday will be mainly dry but increasingly cloudy and breezy.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 25th March

For the first time this season we were greeted with some nice settled water with decent clarity, strong south westerly winds were a bit of a pain mid-week. With the better conditions, confidence was high for a decent week of catches. 40 Salmon and 5 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 21lb Salmon caught on the Birgham Dub Beat.

The bulk of the weekly catch was caught below Kelso, with the water temperature remaining on the cooler side for the time of the year the springer’s continue to make slower progress upstream.

The odd fish are starting to be caught above Kelso and on Monday Rutherford got off the mark for the season with further fish from Lower Makerstoun and the Mertoun beats reported.

On the Junction, 9 fish were landed for the week with Mr Norman Kennedy, Ms Pat Leary & Ms Wendy Dawson been amongst the successful anglers on the beat. On Upper Hendersyde 5 fish were landed for the week the best been a superb 20lb fish landed by Mr Don Macalister on a Willie Gunn, Mr Patrick Behan landed his 1^st ever salmon on Saturday, well done Sir hope it’s the first of many for you. On Hendersyde 6 fish were landed the best a superb 20lb fish on the fly for Mr Will Haggas. On South Wark Mr Chris Noble had a fine sea liced 7lber while Mr Spencer Tolley landed a nice wee fish from Lower North Wark on Monday and followed it up with an 8lber, the 1^st of the season from the Bluestone beat on the River Whiteadder.

Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels reports “Better week with 3 fish to 20lbs on Tuesday then blank until Saturday with 2 unexpected fish in the dirty water, well done lads for not giving up”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A challenging week weather wise, some tough windy conditions and a river unsettled with small lifts from snow melt. The rods were rewarded for their efforts though with some superb springer’s. 1 on Wednesday at 20lb and another on Friday at 19lb both on fly. We had 6 springer’s for the week, given our moral a much needed boost”

On Upper North Wark, finally we had some reasonable conditions to fish in at the start of the week. Mr Gary Derrick landed a cracking 5lb Sea Trout from the Back of the Isle on a 2” Heather Fly, while on Tuesday Mr Hugh Newton landed a lovely wee springer from the Middle Island on an inch n half black and yellow. The wind caused us a few problems mid-week and coloured water on Saturday didn’t help us add to the tally. Water conditions look decent for the start of the week so fingers crossed

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder in perfect condition for the start of the week with water level at 1ft 9 inches and in great condition. Fresh fish now running with one fish of 8lb returned from a private beat early this week”

We were notified on Tuesday evening about the tragic loss of Andrew Lee. He was a good and funny man, with a great passion for life and of course his fishing. He will be a sorely missed in the Tweed valley by many people. We would like to pass on our deepest sympathies to his family and his close friends

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 0” and the water temperature is 36.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Lower Makerstoun and Lower Birgham beats should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, Tuesday will be cloudy with occasional rain and drizzle. Staying damp overnight. Wednesday, staying mostly cloudy with further spells of rain and possibly some sleet at times. Overnight, chilly with patchy rain and sleet. On Thursday, it looks like being cloudy at times with patchy rain or sleet but a few brighter interludes.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 25th February 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 25th February

The season so far been largely unsettled with unsuitable water heights and clarity, but last week when we finally got a few days of reasonable conditions the catches did improve albeit modestly.

Above Kelso the Floors beats landed 3 for the week and Lower Mertoun reported 1, while below Kelso, the Junction had a better week with 6 springer’s landed. Mr Peter Hopper landed his 1^st Salmon along with Mr Allan Halfacre and Mr Bill Shields who also had success over the 2^nd half of the week when conditions settled after Monday’s rise. Other success that I heard about was Mr Alex Knox of the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso and Mr James Armstrong landing nice fish on Thursday and Friday.

On Wednesday, Mr Mick Slinger landed a lovely 7lb Springer from Upper Hendersyde while on Upper North Wark Mr Colin Hewitt landed the beats 1^st springer of the season.

On Friday Mr John McGregor landed 2 cracking springer’s weighing 11lb and 14lb from the Willows Pool under the guidance of Head Boatman Mr Richard Farr.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Well after a frustrating start with unsettled river we finally got off the mark on Thursday with a cracking 18lber followed on Friday with 2 more nice fish. Black and Yellow variants doing the business”

On Upper North Wark, we got off the mark with a lovely springer landed in the Snipe by Mr Colin Hewitt on an Eternal Optimist 1.25” copper tube fly, Colin also had a 3lb fresh Sea Trout on the same day. On Saturday Mr John Dewar spinning a toby landed a cracking fresh Sea Trout of 4lbs from the Dub. A few other Kelts were landed during the week. On Monday we greeted some of the Highet family and friends to the beat, none of which had experienced a day’s salmon fishing before. After the customary drams we set about the fishing and all picked it up really quickly and an enjoyable time was had, just a pity about the rising river. We hope to see you all again with better conditions and replenished dram supplies. I would like to pass on our congratulations to regular fisher Mr Jamie McCulloch and his lovely Fiancée Ellece on the birth of their 1^st child.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A slightly better week in that we caught a springer and that the levels are dropping in which will suit us. Of course the best result was the score at Murrayfield”

24 Salmon and 6 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught on the Hendersyde Beat.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 6” and the water temperature is 37.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Lower Makerstoun, Upper Hendersyde, Upper North Wark and West Learmouth should all have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, It will stay cold through the coming week, feeling increasingly so as a bitterly cold easterly wind strengthens. There will be scattered snow showers at times, and the snow showers could become heavier and more widespread at times, especially around Wednesday.
