River Tweed River Report Week Ending 3rd February 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 3rd February

The first few days of the new season as always new optimism of what the season will bring and what new memories will be made. Water conditions were looking really good in the lead up to opening day, but a 1ft lift on the Wednesday gave the beats below the Teviot a road wash muck that wasn’t ideal.

As would be expected in the conditions the Springer’s that were caught were mall around the Kelso area. I believe Upper Floors landed the 1st fish of the river with Mr Bjorn Sahlquist been the successful angler.

The Floors beats had a decent start to the season with 5 Springer’s landed for the opening 3 days. Further to Bjorn’s fish there were 2 other landed on Upper, inc a  stunning sea liced fish from the Black Stone While Lower got off the mark with Herbert landing his first ever Springer. On a Bob Clay split cane rod too! At the end of the day on Saturday Kent landed a cracking springer from the Coachwynd.

The Junction beat landed 3 with Mr Bob Miller landing 2 and DC landing 1.

Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Rober Jewels reports “Very quiet 3 days apart from the springer we got on Saturday morning. Hopefully a few about this week with the river settling down nicely”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Water dropped to a nice height, availability all week for the next 2 weeks. A few kelts caught as the water dropped to a better fishable height”

On Upper North Wark, levels were at a good height for the beat but the colour in the water didn’t make fishing conditions ideal. Mr Mike Graham landed a couple of kelts.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A bit on the high side on Opening Day for us but we fished and had a well mended kelt. Friday and Saturday had good conditions but no fish to be seen. Things will improve as the levels drop back”

10 Salmon and 0 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 12lb Salmon caught on the Junction Beat.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 2” and the water temperature is 37.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Upper Floors, Lower Floors, Lower Birgham, Upper North Wark and South Wark should all have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week looks quite cold with a chance of snow/ice Monday night into Tuesday. Towards the end of the week it looks like the wind will be picking up

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have information and photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Most beats will be fishing various sinking density lines with poly leaders on the end at the time of year it has to be a Black and Yellow and if that fails a Yellow and Black! Copper tubes around 1.5” should be the order of the day, some anglers are choosingto fish more with Aluminium tubes and using the fly line to get down. Pattern’s I would suggest are Black and Yellow (Tosh), Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp and Spring Ghillie should bring success. A wee personal favourite of mine is the Black and Yellow Samurai Shrimp at this time of year.  As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 8th April 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 8th April

With a fairly settled but windy forecast hopes were high of finally getting a full week of fishing in reasonable conditions, something we haven’t had all season so far. With the milder water temperatures and frequent rises in the water the fish have started to make their further up the river system above Kelso. With 102 fish been reported this week, it’s been the best week of the season so far.

Middle Pavilion got off and running with Mr Keith Webster landed 2 on Friday. Whilie Lower Pavillion (2) Bemersyde (5) Upper Dryburgh (3) and Lower Dryburgh (3) all reporting fish this week, with a cracking 25lber been landed at Lower Dryburgh on Wednesday.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Ian Farr reports “ 6 Fish for the week, biggest 15lbs all fresh while we also lost 3”

The Floor’s beats continue to catch on a regular basis with 19 landed for the week.

Speaking with Makerstoun's Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle, “1 off Upper and 4 Of Lower for the week. Mr James Robertson landed a 7lber in the Red Stones Pool on the CeeCee Fly, Mr Steven Roberts landed 2 with the best weighing 9lbs from the Pots in the Elchie Pool on the CeeCee Fly. Ms Gillian Hay landing a 7lb fish on Saturday in the Elchie Pool on a Yellow Monkey.

On the Junction, the Mike Neil Party fished the first half of the week landed 7 fish on the fly, while the Ian Mattioli party had 9 to 14lbs for the end of the week. On Thursday Ms Laura Mattioli christened her new fly rod and landing a sea liced 7lber with Boatman Gavin Brown. The fish over the course of the week were mostly liced and were caught on Black and Yellow Flies.

On Sprouston 10 fish were landed for the week with 6 of these caught on Friday. Mr Andy Britton with 4 and Mr Jim Reid with 2 all of which were sea liced and taken on the fly. While on Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “5 for the week, mostly fresh with a couple liced. A couple with dolphin bite marks, at last getting down to a height to slow them down and get fishing with sink tips and smaller flies"

On Lower Birgham a very special moment happened on Tuesday when 10 Year old Debbie Harris landed her 1st Salmon under the guidance of Boatman Ryan Morrison. Very well done Debbie.

At Upper North Wark fishing was a bit quieter with 1 landed for the week, Mr Andrew Bendall been the successful angler landed a lovely 6lb fish from the Snipe. We’re still seeing the odd fish in the pools.

Water conditions are starting to suit Tillmouth and they got off the mark on Saturday.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 1” and the water temperature is 50.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would recommend Tillmouth, Middle Pavillion and the Dryburgh beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

Looking ahead to next week the water levels are pretty steady with a slow drop, there is a bit of rain forecast this week but we’ll need to wait and see what comes. Conditions are really good for the majority of beats at the moment and with the lower water conditions I would expect fish to start being caught below Coldstream.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10, tubes around the ¾” – 1”  size should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Ghillie, Underghillie & Girnal Shrimp should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders or an intermediate, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala,  Tobies in 18gm – 28gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 1st April 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 1st April

After losing most of the previous week to the water conditions it was a welcome sight to see clear water last Monday morning and a reasonable height for fishing.

The best around Kelso enjoyed the best of the fishing with fish caught on beats above and below the Teviot junction.

The Floor’s beats enjoyed a good March week landing 21 fish, including a superb fish of 24lb caught by regular Tweed angler, and former Malloch Trophy winner Mr Jim Reid.

Fishing at Upper Dryburgh Mr Mike Roberts landed 2, while Rutherford had 6 for the week with 5 caught in a rush on Wednesday!

Speaking with Makerstoun's Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle, “ the unsettled conditions haven't helped us, but we did managed 2 fish this week. One on Monday @ 12lbs and one on Thursday @ 7lbs. However we saw good numbers of fish running on Wednesday morning”

On the Junction, Mr John Richardson’s party landed 26 along with 1 Sea Trout for the week most of which were sea liced and the biggest was 16lbs. The Underghillie Fly was amongst the successful patterns.

Upper Hendersyde had 5 for the week up to 12lbs, with 3 taken on the fly. Unsettled conditions again hampered further catches this week reports Head Boatman Robert Jewells.

On Sprouston 2 fish were landed on Monday while on Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A week of 2 halves, we 4 landed on the fly to 15lbs all fresh, then the river did what it has been doing all season and we lost more days to high, dirty water!"

Lower Birgham landed a 9lb sea liced fish on the fly on Tuesday.

At Upper North Wark fishing we had fish moving through at the start of the week and the tactic of just keeping going and trying to get in front of one eventually paid off. On Tuesday Mr Gary Derrick landing a superb 20lb fish on the Fly from the Wark Dub and on Wednesday Mr Hugh Newton landed a 8lber on the Rapala from the Snipe after a brief contact earlier in the same pool on the Fly.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 4” and the water temperature is 50.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would recommend Lower Makerstoun, Upper North Wark and the Dryburgh beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.
Looking ahead to next week the water levels are starting to steady off and should slowly settle and drop in as the week progresses.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 6 or 8, tubes around the inch size should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Ghillie, Underghillie & Girnal Shrimp should bring success, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Tobies in 18gm – 28gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
