River Tweed River Report Week Ending 25th February 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 25th February

The season so far been largely unsettled with unsuitable water heights and clarity, but last week when we finally got a few days of reasonable conditions the catches did improve albeit modestly.

Above Kelso the Floors beats landed 3 for the week and Lower Mertoun reported 1, while below Kelso, the Junction had a better week with 6 springer’s landed. Mr Peter Hopper landed his 1st Salmon along with Mr Allan Halfacre and Mr Bill Shields who also had success over the 2nd half of the week when conditions settled after Monday’s rise. Other success that I heard about was Mr Alex Knox of the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso and Mr James Armstrong landing nice fish on Thursday and Friday.

On Wednesday, Mr Mick Slinger landed a lovely 7lb Springer from Upper Hendersyde while on Upper North Wark Mr Colin Hewitt landed the beats 1st springer of the season.

On Friday Mr John McGregor landed 2 cracking springer’s weighing 11lb and 14lb from the Willows Pool under the guidance of Head Boatman Mr Richard Farr.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Well after a frustrating start with unsettled river we finally got off the mark on Thursday with a cracking 18lber followed on Friday with 2 more nice fish. Black and Yellow variants doing the business”

On Upper North Wark, we got off the mark with a lovely springer landed in the Snipe by Mr Colin Hewitt on an Eternal Optimist 1.25” copper tube fly, Colin also had a 3lb fresh Sea Trout on the same day. On Saturday Mr John Dewar spinning a toby landed a cracking fresh Sea Trout of 4lbs from the Dub. A few other Kelts were landed during the week. On Monday we greeted some of the Highet family and friends to the beat, none of which had experienced a day’s salmon fishing before. After the customary drams we set about the fishing and all picked it up really quickly and an enjoyable time was had, just a pity about the rising river. We hope to see you all again with better conditions and replenished dram supplies. I would like to pass on our congratulations to regular fisher Mr Jamie McCulloch and his lovely FiancĂ©e Ellece on the birth of their 1st child.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A slightly better week in that we caught a springer and that the levels are dropping in which will suit us. Of course the best result was the score at Murrayfield”

24 Salmon and 6 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught on the Hendersyde Beat.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 6” and the water temperature is 37.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Lower Makerstoun, Upper Hendersyde, Upper North Wark and West Learmouth should all have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, It will stay cold through the coming week, feeling increasingly so as a bitterly cold easterly wind strengthens. There will be scattered snow showers at times, and the snow showers could become heavier and more widespread at times, especially around Wednesday.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Most beats will be fishing various sinking density lines with poly leaders on the end at the time of year it has to be a Black and Yellow and if that fails a Yellow and Black! Copper tubes around 1.5” should be the order of the day, some anglers are choosing to fish more with Aluminium tubes and using the fly line to get down. Pattern’s I would suggest are Black and Yellow (Tosh), Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp and Spring Ghillie should bring success. A wee personal favourite of mine is the Black and Yellow Samurai Shrimp at this time of year. If you like to give the spinner a go, the Salmo Toby, Devon Minnow fished nice and slow should bring results.
As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 17th February 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 17th February

The water clarity and levels pretty much ruined the whole weeks fishing with Tuesday and Saturday been the only days with fishable water below Kelso.

Above Kelso the Floors beats landed 3 for the week, while below Kelso, Mr Eric Bell landed an 8lber from the Wintercast on Upper Hendersyde on Tuesday, on the same day Carham got off the mark for the season with 2 lovely springer’s landed in the Kitchen Rocks Pool.

On Friday Mr Lee Ross caught South Wark’s 1st of the season with a nice wee springer landed on a 2” Yellow and Blue Copper Tube from the Temple Pool, with Head Boatman Richard Farr on the oars.

There seemed to be a few Sea Trout about this week with 4 been landed. Lower Birgham landed the best one with Mr Stewart Binns landed a cracking 9lber on the Fly, While on Upper North Wark Mr Hugh Newton landed 2 from the Snipe Pool on a 28gm Silver Toby. Hendersyde also landed one on Tuesday.

On Upper North Wark, pretty much faces with dirty water most of the week. Mr Hugh Newton landed 2 Sea Trout from the Snipe on Saturday.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “Not a lot to say really, cold, water up and down on a daily basis. Had a few kelts. River needs to really drop back so we can get round the beat and maybe it'll get some fish to stop on the beat.

8 Salmon and 4 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 8lb Salmon caught on the Upper Hendersyde Beat.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 8” and the water temperature is 36.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Lower Makerstoun, Upper North Wark should all have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, Cloudy and wet start on Tuesday with outbreaks of rain pushing eastwards to leave the afternoon drier and brighter. Turning chilly overnight with clear spells, mist and fog patches forming locally. Dry but increasingly cloudy through Wednesday and overnight. Remaining cloudy on Thursday but largely dry with winds picking up through the day.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 10th February 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 10th February

The water clarity was much better at the start of the week and the as the river dropped levels a few more beats below Kelso found some success. However this was relatively short lived as a milder day on Thursday brought in some snow melt and the river was a grumbly colour on Friday before rising 1ft and becoming pretty mucky on Saturday.

Heavy rain on Sunday has put the river up over 4ft and was really dirty this morning which will certainly effect Monday’s fishing.

The fish continued to be caught mostly in the Kelso area this week with Lower Makerstoun 2, Upper Floors 1, Lower Floors 2, Junction 7, Upper Hendersyde 1, Sprouston 2, Birgham Dub 5 having success this week.

Mr David Foreman was amongst the successful anglers at the Junction, while Oscar had a nice fish from Lower Floors on Monday. We heard of success for Mr Mark Jackson and Mr Alex Knox landing nice fish around 14/15lbs. Was good to see Lower Makerstoun get off the mark with 2 fish on Wednesday with Paddy Tomkins been successful.

Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “It’s not thick with fish but we’re off the mark at least, hopefully this rise (Sunday) will draw one or two further on from the Junction”

On Upper North Wark, quiet week giving the water conditions, a couple of kelts and we had hold of what looked like a decent springer on Thursday but it fell off.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A slow week with no fish. We did see one on Thursday heading and tailing. Fished hard all week but no pulls”

20 Salmon and 0 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 19lb Salmon caught on the Junction Beat.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3ft 9” and the water temperature is 37.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Lower Birgham, Upper North Wark and South Wark should all have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, Spells of heavy snow Tuesday morning, then wintry showers through the afternoon and overnight. Later in the night a front will bring more persistent rain in from the west and this will fall as snow initially. On Wednesday, the snow will become more confined to higher ground. Wintry showers will follow into the afternoon and overnight. Wintry showers continuing on Thursday.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 3rd February 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 3rd February

The first few days of the new season as always new optimism of what the season will bring and what new memories will be made. Water conditions were looking really good in the lead up to opening day, but a 1ft lift on the Wednesday gave the beats below the Teviot a road wash muck that wasn’t ideal.

As would be expected in the conditions the Springer’s that were caught were mall around the Kelso area. I believe Upper Floors landed the 1st fish of the river with Mr Bjorn Sahlquist been the successful angler.

The Floors beats had a decent start to the season with 5 Springer’s landed for the opening 3 days. Further to Bjorn’s fish there were 2 other landed on Upper, inc a  stunning sea liced fish from the Black Stone While Lower got off the mark with Herbert landing his first ever Springer. On a Bob Clay split cane rod too! At the end of the day on Saturday Kent landed a cracking springer from the Coachwynd.

The Junction beat landed 3 with Mr Bob Miller landing 2 and DC landing 1.

Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Rober Jewels reports “Very quiet 3 days apart from the springer we got on Saturday morning. Hopefully a few about this week with the river settling down nicely”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Water dropped to a nice height, availability all week for the next 2 weeks. A few kelts caught as the water dropped to a better fishable height”

On Upper North Wark, levels were at a good height for the beat but the colour in the water didn’t make fishing conditions ideal. Mr Mike Graham landed a couple of kelts.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A bit on the high side on Opening Day for us but we fished and had a well mended kelt. Friday and Saturday had good conditions but no fish to be seen. Things will improve as the levels drop back”

10 Salmon and 0 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 12lb Salmon caught on the Junction Beat.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 2” and the water temperature is 37.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Upper Floors, Lower Floors, Lower Birgham, Upper North Wark and South Wark should all have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week looks quite cold with a chance of snow/ice Monday night into Tuesday. Towards the end of the week it looks like the wind will be picking up

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have information and photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
