River Tweed River Report Week Ending 18th July 2020 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 18th July

The weather changed a bit the last week with high pressure pushing in with a very clammy muggy heat feel to it which can be uncomfortable at times along with this the river started to drop towards summer level again after a good few weeks of catches with the little regular lifts, the catches notably dropped off this week especially up the river, with the lower river dominating the catches this week. There appears to be a good mix of grilse and summer salmon entering the river and stirring up some older fish as they move through the system. A wee lift in the next week or so might just increase the catches again. Reports of successful anglers on the river are very limited this week, I did hear that Mr Stevie Blackmore landed his first Tweed Salmon and a couple of Sea Trout for Mr Stuart Norris.

The River Tweed Salmon Fishing Museum will be officially opened by Her Grace the Duchess of Roxburghe and Sir Gareth Edwards at 6pm on Thursday 3rd September 2020 in the Town Hall, The Square, Kelso.

Above Kelso 41 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 79 were reported and below Coldstream 102 were reported. With the best fishing being at Tillmouth where 39 were landed. Birgham Dub 16 and the Lees 14 also picked away during the week.

Waltham and Dritness Beat reports with the water levels dropping we had another decent week with 10 Salmon/Grilse landed with the best fish being an 18lber caught by Mr Dave Lorimer. Lucky rods were, Dave Lorimer 4 (four fish), Ron Martin 3 and Mike Wood 3.

222 Salmon and 36 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 20lb Salmon caught on the Birgham Dub beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well the end of another good week on the river. The first few days of the week we were hearing of the fresh fish above and below us. But we never saw them and couldn’t find them. But we did find some older river fish sat in some of the pools and a couple of sea trout. But as the week went on the fish got fresher. And some even sea liced. We had our first grilse at the end of the week and was covered in sea lice showing how fast they have been moving up the system. But 9 salmon and 3 sea trout landed this week and a fantastic week of sport with a couple of first fish aswell. Doesn’t get much better, and in the middle of July aswell. Looking forward to the week ahead not a lot of rain forecast but as we saw last week they can still in the Low water so let’s hope they continue to come! Tight lines. Tom.

On Upper North Wark, The beat remains closed.

Hawick Angling Club reports “The Club have extended their sales of Salmon Permits for the season until the end of July. With the right water height salmon will be caught from now on and the Teviot gets a good run of Sea Trout. Permits are priced at £150 for visitors and £80 for local residents. Anyone interested can email the club Secretary Drew Dickson on drewdickson@talktalk.net”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

***** Reopening 1st August***** After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 4” and the water temperature is 64.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Milne Graden and Horncliffe beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, a cloudy and rather wet start with spells of persistent rain. During the morning, these will clear to the east to leave many areas largely dry during the afternoon, though a few showers will linger. Cloudy for some of Thursday with scattered showers, but turning drier and brighter through the day. Friday will be largely dry with plenty of sunny spells, but a few areas of cloud and the odd shower are likely later too. Saturday looks like being a cloudy, wet and windy day as a band of frontal rain moves through.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are nearly at summer level so a floating line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats with Aurora Cascade, Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp, Editor and Ghillie Flies are all capable to tempting fish on size 10-14 dressed hooks. Great time of the season for giving the Sunray Shadow a go to. On the spinning front, the flying c and toby should be worth a go.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 4th July 2020 and Week Ending 11th July 2020

Due to Fishpals regularly crashing last week please find before the river reports for the last 2 weeks.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 4th July

The week started with a small flood from Sunday left the river carrying a bit of colour as the week started and really effected the catches for Monday between Kelso and Coldstream as the colour was there from the start of the day before spreading down through to the bottom beats. As the week progressed the fishing picked up steadily with good numbers of salmon and sea trout been caught, the latter normally very readily caught in the coloured water. The number of big sea trout 10lb plus reported this week looked very good with at least 10 reported up to 15lbs.

Fishing at Boleside Mr Craig Drever landed 8 fish for his day and his fishing companion Mr Lee Conway landed 3 Sea Trout. On Dryburgh Upper, Beat Ghillie Mr Brian Douglas landed a lovely fish of 11lbs. Mr Nicholas Munro Ferguson landed 3 salmon and a sea trout. Mr Ginger Cuthbert had a great day landed 6 there was also success on the beat for Mr Callum Miller landed 2 and 1 each for Mr Billy McNeil, Mr Peter Clark and Mr Gordon Smith. Middle Pavillion ghillie Mr Steven Charlton got is personally tally off and running for the season using a deadly Cascade Feeler conehead tied by Tay Salmon Fly that be borrowed from Mr Lee Ross. Mr Olly Thomson fishing at Lower Pavilion landed 2 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout. Fishing at Bemersyde, Ms Fiona Brown landed and 8lber from the Boat Pool, Mr Colin Chisholm landed a 12lber in the Boat Pool, Mr Tony Bell had 3 for his day, a 10lber from the Woodside, and fish of 12lbs and 9lbs from the Boat Pool on a Size 8 Cascade. Mr Nick Green landed a 10lber in the Boat Pool, Mr John Smith landed a 10lb Sea Trout in the Woodside and even beat ghillie Mr Ian Farr got in on the action landing a 7lber. Mr Iain Wilson from the Borders Gunroom in St Boswells had success on a few beats during the week landed 2 Sea Trout on Mertoun, 13lb, 8lb Salmon and a 5lb Sea trout from Upper Makerstoun before landing a lovely fish on Upper Pavilion. Mr Neil Jones had a superb 15lb fresh fish and an 8lb licer from Upper Makerstoun. Mr Ian Bennet had Success on Gledswood. Rutherford has a good week landing 33 Salmon, with Mr Martin Ritchie, Mr Richard Farr, Mr Alex Triffitt, Mr Andy Britton, Mr John McLeod and Mr Stuart Norris being amongst the successful rods. Mr Richard Summers landed a superb 13lb Sea Trout from the Cauld Stream on the Lees. Fishing on the Teviot Mr Davie Welsh landed a lovely fresh fish.

Above Kelso 203 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 153 were reported and below Coldstream 108 were reported. With the best fishing been at Rutherford where 33 were landed. Bemersyde 29 and the Makerstoun beats 23 also had reasonable catches for the week.

Waltham and Dritness Beat, 2 rises in water this week 3ft on Monday and 2.5ft on Saturday didn’t help the beat but we managed to land 4 salmon, lucky rods were, Jack Weightman 2 (two fish) Mike Wood 1 and Martin Inkster 1.

464 Salmon and 237 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 23lb Salmon caught on the Lower Makerstoun beat.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Well, what a week we have had at Bemersyde. First of all, congratulations to every one catching the fish in not the best of conditions for most of the week. We started on Monday with a dirty river, 2 foot on the gauge. It dropped down to 9 inches as the week went on, but with more rain at the end of the week, by Saturday it was back up to 2 foot and a deep brown colour. We had some supper-fresh salmon up to 14 lbs and a couple of older spring fish to catch. We saw the first grilse of the season on Saturday and it was nice to see them come. There were fish pushing past us all week; they were keeping their heads down a bit and I think we caught more than were actually seen! There were also some sea trout around, ending with 9 for the week up to 10 lbs. We landed 29 salmon and lost about 10. With the water heights as they are and no boats out on the beat, we are only fishing the lower half mile of the beat, so we are more than happy with the catch. We have managed to tag a few fish this week and are getting the hang of it now.

M 5 salmon 1 st

T 4 salmon 3 st

W 5 salmon 0 st

T 5 salmon 1st

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well what a week on the river! From the top of the river through the middle to the very bottom of the river, fish seemed plentiful and fresh and sea trout and we had water. What more could we all want! More obviously or bigger or.... hang on. Let’s just remember what time of year we are in and what a terrific week of fishing throughout we have all had!!

We landed 7 Salmon and 5 sea trout for the week. An odd fresh fish but mostly slightly older fish but a fish None the less. We had several water lifts to contend with this week which made fishing tough at times, but it did also shuffle the pack and brought some more fish up.

Most of the salmon we had this week were of good size and summer salmon or late spring fish. No grilse or smaller fish. The sea trout were varied in size and colours. We have had another lump of water come down the river on Sunday and we will have to wait to see what it means for fishing at the beginning of the week. Fingers crossed its clear enough and low enough to get back on the water and set off as we finished last week. Tight lines and safe fishing. Tom”

On Upper North Wark, The beat remains closed.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A good week despite the river going up and down almost on a daily basis, 13 salmon landed and many more pulls and fish on and off, fish of the week has to be Richard Summers 13lb sea trout from the Lower cauld it was a lovely fish. There are plenty fish in the river in fact I don't think I've ever seen as many at this time of year and the condition of the fish is superb. If this weather ever settles down there will be some good fishing next week. See Lees page on Tweedbeats for full report of week.”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 1” and the water temperature is 56.

Total catch last week:  464 Salmon & 237 Sea Trout

Total caught so far this season: 1926 Salmon and 367 Sea Trout

As reported on Fishtweed:-

(Biggest Salmon 23lb Lower Makerstoun)

(Biggest Sea Trout 15lb Drygrange)

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 11th July

Another lift to start the week gave a bit of colour below Kelso but it was a welcome rise in levels to keep the fish moving through the river system with fish been caught near the whole length of the river. The odd grilse have made an appearance recently with a few more been reported along with some very good conditioned salmon and sea trout. It’s very encouraging to see such quality fish been caught regularly long may it continue.

Fishing at Ashisteil Mr Craig Drever landed a 9lber. Mr Tam Black fishing at Boleside landed a fresh 8lber. Dryburgh Upper picked away during the week landing 8 salmon with the highlight being 10 years old, Marcus Cordingly landing his PB salmon, a nice double figure fish on the spinner. Also on the same beat Mr Will Bird landed 2, Mr Roger Herbert and Ms Vicky Crouch also landed nice fish. Mr Grant Rastall landed a 5lb Sea Trout in the battery pool. Rutherford had a great week landing 32 fish with a superb day of 15 fish landed on Thursday, one lucky angler landing 7 on the fly. Mr Martin Ritchie had a good few days landing 4 Salmon and 3 sea trout with the superb Editor Sunray Shadow getting some good interest. Mr Jonathan Reddin had a good couple of days on Upper Floors landed 9 Salmon and 6 Sea Trout, while on the same beat Mr Mike Moran landed a lovely fresh fish on the fly. Mr David Foreman landed a beautiful 14lb fresh fish and a nice sea trout at the Lees. Fishing at Ladykirk Mr Jonathan Lane landed a couple and some nice sea trout. Mr Marc Wrigglesworth and Mr Brad Paige had success on the river during the last week.

Above Kelso 168 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 137 were reported and below Coldstream 112 were reported. With the best fishing been at the Floors Beats where 42 Salmon were landed along with 24 Sea Trout. Rutherford 32 and Birgham Dub 30 also had reasonable catches for the week.

Waltham and Dritness Beat, More rises of water again this week, up to around 3 foot on Monday, and very coloured, conditions improved later in the week with fresh fish running. We managed to land 4 salmon, lucky rods were, Jack Weightman 2 (two fish) Mike Wood 1 and Dave Lorimer 1.

417 Salmon and 184 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 26lb Salmon caught on the Milne Graden beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well another week of good water, good conditions and with fish in the river. It’s everything that we all want and hope for our fishing. How lucky on the whole this summer we have been to have favourable conditions and great opportunities of finding that sometimes illusive fish. We had another great week of 6 salmon and 7 sea trout. Both a mix of new salmon and old and on the whole very fresh sea trout. Most of the action came in the early part of the week and there were a fair number of losses as well, it happens, we don’t like it but we can’t do a lot about them. But at least they have taken a hold and given us the thrill of a bit of the chase.... Looking at the week ahead the weather man says it to remain settled and no significant rain, but as we know of weather forecasts.... it could all change tomorrow. But a nice settled week would be good and hopefully find some more fish. 2020 has been a hugely unprecedented time for us all but great to see the positivity and great catch returns throughout alot of our native rivers. Tight lines. Tom”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 9” and the water temperature is 58.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Dryburgh Upper, Upper and Lower Makerstoun Beat’s should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Tomorrow will be another cloudy day with a chance of a few sharp showers for a time. It will become increasingly dry with some sunny spells developing later in the day. On Tuesday, a moderate north-westerly breeze may feed some occasional showers at times, mainly light. The showers will peter out later in the day, leaving clear spells overnight. Wednesday may see the occasional showers but most areas will remain dry with sunny spells and variable cloud. As for Thursday, it will be largely fine with spells of sunshine. Feeling warmer as well.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are a bit more settled looking this week with a few showers that might top up the levels. I would suggest a floating line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats with Aurora Cascade, Usual Shrimp, Copper Cascade, Ghillie and Underghillie Flies are all capable to tempting fish on size 8-12 dressed hooks or 1/4”-1/2” tubes.
