River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 23rd September
Unsettled water seems to be the regular phrase this season with another
week with 2 lifts in the levels followed by a few days of grubby dark water.
Old fish continue to be seen in most beats with some reports of fresh fish been
seen but running with their heads down. With the recent rises the fish are
pushing towards the upper river with the bulk of the weekly catch just now been
caught above Kelso.
Mr Nick Bateman fishing on Middle Pavilion landed 2 fish on Monday and
followed them up with an 18lb fish from the Boat Sheil on Wednesday.
296
Salmon and 27 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 25lb Salmon caught
on the Fairnilee Beat.
Above
Kelso 118 Salmon were reported with the best of the catches made on the Mertoun
Beats 17, Rutherford 12, Makerstoun Beats 7, Upper Floors 14 & Lower Floors
with 10.
Bemersyde
Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Where are all the fresh fish? Just old fish
here”
Makerstoun
Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “6 for the week, a fresh one would be
nice”
Between
Kelso and Coldstream 115 Salmon were reported with Junction 16, Upper
Hendersyde 7, Hendersyde 9, Sprouston 13, Birgham Dub 14, Lower North Wark 13,
South Wark 10, West Learmouth 15 & Lees 14 having the better of the
fishing.
Upper
Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels reports “Good and bad lost a few fish
at the start of the week. Friday was difficult in coloured water. Ended the
week with 7 Salmon and 5 Sea Trout, all coloured (Returned) Highlight was Mr
Charlie Sabel landing his first ever salmon on Saturday morning then followed
it up with 2 Sea Trout”
Hendersyde
Head Boatman Ketch reports “Another frustrating week of fishing unsettles
water. We managed 9 for the week but unfortunately nothing fresh. Have been
seeing the odd fresh fish but they’ve got the heads down”
On Upper
North Wark, A very frustrating week saw a few fish on the move after the rises
Monday and Friday but very quiet in between. Good effort from the rods with no
reward.
Mr
Douglas Aitken fishing at Cornhill reports “A very
enjoyable time spent at Cornhill on Tweed. Both Brendan and Tam try so hard to
make the day the best it can be it's hard to fish when you are laughing so hard
in the boat! River was up and down and running a lot of colour which made it
tricky at best! We managed to find one silver tourist”
Below
Coldstream 33 Salmon were landed with the best of the catches coming from Tillmouth
7 and Ladykirk Beats with 11.
Milne
Graden Head Boatman Mr Kevin Wright reports “5th cast on Monday
morning we landed a 20lbwe, lost 2 in the afternoon. Lost 1 on Tuesday and got
an old hen fish mid-week”
Ladykirk
Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Finished
the week with 11 up to 18lb (fresh hen, landed 200m downstream (well done James
& Iain) and returned), and 5 & 6lb freshish sea trout. Managed to
lose 5 too on Saturday, including big coloured fish
(broken), and 8lb fresh.”
On the
tributaries, the main beats on the Till were quieter this week with Lower
Tindal 1 and Redscar and Upper Tindal 1.
Mr David
Cowan of Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary reports” Whiteadder started the week with a ft above normal tinted by
the Blackadder and in perfect condition. That resulted in 5 salmon for Monday and as the water dropped away we had 1 salmon
for Tuesday, 2 for Wednesday,
1 for Thursday and 1 on
Friday. Levels back down to 6 inches to start next week but still peaty
and in good condition.”
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft and the water temperature is 51.
Looking
at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Upper Hendersyde and
Lower Birgham beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.
The
forecast this coming week looks rather unsettled with some rain forecast on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday with mostly wind coming from the south east.
As always
