River Tweed River Report Week Ending 13th October
After more than 5 months since we had some
water in the river we finally got a decent lift on Saturday night with it
reaching 6ft 2 on the Sprouston gauge on Fishtweed. Over today the water has
dropped back around 3ft and the colour was starting to get better hopefully
conditions will be ok to get out fishing tomorrow.
Last week was plagued by wind, start of the
week a south westerly was causing enough problems as it reached near 45mph on
Tuesday by the time Friday came it was a 45mph south easterly making casting an
absolute pain for some beats.
The weekly catch dropped by about 50% on recent
weeks as the water got back to around summer level and I’m sure the wind caught
havoc with casting did not help with the catches. Information received was
quite quiet this week, maybe the phone ringing off the hook looking for our excellent
services as landscapers took priority! Back to the river, Mr Neil Donaldson
fishing at Sprouston landed 2x 20lb fish at the start of the week, while on the
Junction Ms Helen Drummond landed a fish from Hempseedford ably assisted by
boatman Mr Pud Murray. Mr John MacPhail
fishing the Jed AA water on the River Teviot landed 2 salmon.
26 Salmon were reported caught above Kelso, 61
Salmon were reported between Kelso and Coldstream the best of the fishing was
at the Lees with 13 and Hendersyde 14. Below Coldstream 53 were reported, Tillmouth
continue to be the best performing beat with 30.
Out on the town this week, along with some
fishers we have a lovely time in the Queen’s Head with an excellent music
playlist thanks to Anna, then after any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always
worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the
fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit
during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table and don’t drink all
the Glenfarclas 25yo before I’m back!!!
On the River Till, no fish were reported
153 Salmon and 20 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon
caught on the Sprouston Beat.
Bemersyde Head
Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Last week seen 7 fish landed and a few
lost, the water was very low and clear most of the fish came on size 10 and 12
dressed flies with the Cascade doing most of the damage. 10 foot intermediate
and type 3 tips. The early part of week saw most of the fish landed but as the
water dropped it went quiet. Mixed party Neil Sayers had 3 up to 10lbs, Bob
Bilsand had 2 the biggest 12lbs and Brian Skye weighed in with 2. Most fish
came out of the Boat Pool but Woodside and the Stream had fish. Monday started
with little water and no fish, Tuesday we had a gale force wind and a rising
water and today as I speak the river is a foot on the gauge with some colour
with the rain from last night. The sun is out and a few fish running”
On Upper North Wark, conditions remained on the low
side for the beat but we managed a couple of fish. Mr David Norman ably
assisted by ghillie Richard landed 1 on Monday on a Posh Tosh, while on Tuesday
in the gale force winds Mr Richard Farr landed a nice fish on a Snaelda.
Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A
challenging week weather wise, 13 fish landed and a few other pulls, a couple
of cleaner fish in the bag but on the whole the fish were well coloured. The
wind really spoiled the week making casting almost impossible at times. A black
frances fished on a floating line with a sink tip was a popular choice with the
fish and the fishermen. Saturday was a wipe out with the river rising and
coloured, it might just fish on Monday, depends on the rain still falling. For
a full report see Malcolm's fishing report on the Lees page on Tweedbeats”
Dave Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling
Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder at 1ft 8 inches Sunday
morning and the river should fine down for the middle of the week. With the
Tweed in full flood the Whiteadder could be a good standby. Day tickets are
available on FishPal and beat maps can be downloaded from www.whiteadder.co.uk”
The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3ft 8” and the water
temperature is 50.
Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Upper
Hendersyde, Upper North Wark beats should have a chance of some action this
week. If you fancy the middle river Rutherford and the Dryburgh beats will be worth
a cast.
The
forecast this coming week, Monday will see any early
patches of fog clear to leave it dry with sunny spells. Winds will again be
light and variable. Tuesday will start largely dry, but will see a band
of light rain moving in from the west. Overnight, there is an increasing risk
for showers. On Wednesday, any scattered showers should clear to then allow for
a largely dry and increasingly bright day. Thursday is set to be a fine day, as
it should essentially remain dry with long sunny spells and generally light
winds.
As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the
information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any
information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin
on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Finally we have had a bit of water in the Tweed and with that the
tactics will need to change a bit this week with the return of the sinking
lines on most beats. Intermediate line with tips and Wet Cel 2 or equivalent should
be the order of the day. Tube flies would be my go to at the start of the week
and see how conditions change as the week progresses. I would suggest are Junction
Shrimp, Red Frances, Temple Shrimp, Red Templedog, Usual Templdog should bring
success. The river is now fly only until the end of the season on the 30th
November.
As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman
or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please
