River Tweed Report Week Ending 22nd June 2019
River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 22nd June
Another steady week of catches which there may have
been thoughts with the water conditions that it was a bit slow this week especially
on the bottom river, does this mean there is a lack of fresh fish coming into
the system or are they bombing through the bottom beats? Been well into June
now some of the beats are now on summer lets with reduced ghillie service while
the grass need cut and other beat work needs attended to, which may result in
some of the catches not making their way onto the online catches until a later
date. June so far have been a decent month with some good catches made here’s a
couple of examples with still a week of June to go. Boleside June Average 6 so
far this year 24, Rutherford 17/42 and Lower Birgham 3/13 showing good
improvements on their average for the month, just goes to show what a wee with
off water over these months can do.
Above Kelso 63 fish were reported, with the Mertoun
Beats 12, Rutherford 14 and Floors Beats 10 having the best of the fishing. On
Rutherford Mr Steve Robbins landed 2 and lost 2 and on Lower Pavilion Mr
Maurice White had success.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 55 fish were reported
with Junction 10, Birgham Dub 14 and Lower North Wark 10 having the best of the
fishing. Mr Jack Melrose fishing at
Lower Birgham had a lovely 5lb sea trout. Mr Adam Spencer fishing the Willow
Hole on the Junction managed two cracking fresh fish at 14lbs and 10lbs before
going underwater to search for his third! Mr Mike Graham had a bit of sport landing
salmon and sea trout using his own tied flies well done Sir.
Below Coldstream 11 fish were reported, which seems
a bit quiet for the water conditions last week. Tillmouth picked away and
landed 6 for the week. On Waltham and Dritness Mr Mike Wood lost a salmon while
there were sea trout landed by Mr Ron Martin and Mr Jack Weightman.
On the River Till, a better week with 2 Salmon and
34 Sea Trout were reported, 1 Salmon and 9 Sea Trout at Redscar and Upper
Tindal, 1 Salmon and 10 Sea Trout on Lower Tindal and 5 Sea Trout on Flodden
and 10 Sea Trout on Tiptoe.
On the River Whiteadder, Mr Stuart Norris had
success on Monday, Mr Gerald Turner landed a lovely 9lb fish from beat 1, Mr Chris
Gee landed a 39” fish from beat 6 (Hutton Castle) and Mr Callum Simpson landed
a cracking 5lb sea trout from Allanton Bridge.
151 Salmon and 96 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught
on the BDAA Whiteadder beat.
Middle
Pavilion Head Ghillie Steven Charlton reports “Two for the
week, both caught by Mr Paul Mickley, Well done to him for getting fish in a
slow week!”
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A great weeks
sport this week. 4 salmon and 8 salmon landed. All were caught on various size
of fly and tubes, but mainly small dressed black flies and Sunrays. I see rain
is forecast, hope it doesn’t make this water change too much, a slight lift
could help us though. Tight lines.
Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “It was a steady week
for us with some good quality salmon being landed each day, all fresh and a few
fish in the teens. Great summer sport on floating lines and sink tips ending
the week with 7 salmon and a grilse.”
On Upper North Wark, building works continue with the
foundations been starting to be laid now, nice to see the ground going up the
way now after all the digging. Water level dropped in but those having a cast
were rewarded with some nice sea trout.
Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder
dropped away steadily over the week to settle at 9 inches this morning.
Three salmon and two sea trout for the week including a fish measured at 39 inches.
Fish in the river but Whiteadder fishes better with more water.”

Hawick Angling Club reports “The windy conditions have not
made for ideal fishing conditions over the past week. However some good catches
have still been made at Acreknowe. Larger dry flies have proven successful at
bringing fish up. Buzzers have also been taking fish. On days when few are
rising Yellow Dancers and similar lures have taken fish. Power bait is still taking the majority of fish at
Williestruther but more anglers are fishing Nymphs, Buzzers and Dries and
taking some nice fish. Barnes Loch
is fishing well and Dries continues to be the most successful method, although
in the windy conditions traditional wet flies are taking fish and are worth a
cast. On the rivers the extra
water was very welcome and no doubt there will be the odd sea-trout and salmon
about, but the level fell away very quickly and is back to summer level. Tickets can be purchased from the usual outlets. Tight Lines”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented
Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip.
Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.
The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of
Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families
this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom
Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 4” and the water temperature is 56.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Rutherford,
Junction and Ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action this week.
The
forecast this coming week, Outbreaks of rain, perhaps with
some thunder and lightning, may continue for a time in the morning. It may
become drier for a time in the afternoon, but there is a risk of further
showers later. Tuesday will be a warm and humid-feeling day. Many places
will remain dry, although there is the threat of one or two thundery showers
developing in the afternoon. Wednesday should also be dry, although it may be
quite cloudy to begin with. By Thursday, an area of high pressure will provide
increasingly fine and calm weather.
As always
I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make
this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or
photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427
or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, Floating lines with assorted poly
leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Sunray Shadow,
Ghillie and Cascader are all capable to tempting fish on half inch or dressed
flies in size 8 and 10. On the spinning front the Carrot or Blue Rapala, 18-20gm
tobies should bring results. If the forecast is right you will need to scale up
a bit if we get a rise.
As always
come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If
you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out
