River Tweed River Report Week Ending 15th July

The week began with the river settling in with the levels holding steady for a couple of days then after a 1.5” rise on Tuesday night the river dropped rather quickly, with 3 inches coming off it the following day. 177 Salmon and 68 Sea Trout were reported for the week, the catches tailed off towards the end of the week, maybe due to the warmer weather pushing the water temperature into the 60s.

Above Kelso there were 58 Salmon reported with the best of the catches made at Upper Mertoun 13, Rutherford 12 & Upper Floors with 15.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Very quiet!”

Between Kelso and Coldstream 90 Salmon and 19 Sea Trout were reported with catches spread out over this area, with the some of the better catches been made on Hendersyde 11, Birgham Dub 25 and 11 Sea Trout & Lower Birgham with 7. Mr Tony Black fishing at Birgham Dub had a good couple of days landing a few fish including a cracking sea trout of 10lbs.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A good steady week with some nice summer salmon. Fresh but not liced. No grilse yet but a few sea trout about. Small flies and sink tips doing the business. Finished with 11 Salmon and 6 Sea Trout”

Lower Birgham Boatman Mr Ryan Morrison reports “Fresh liced fish this week, average of 10lbs. Seen fish towards the end of the week moving through”

On Upper North Wark we had a decent week considering the lower water conditions, with early morning’s and the evenings proving the best times for a cast. All fish taken on the fly this week with Sunrays proving the most successful. Mr Cockburn & Mr Nelson were amongst the successful anglers.

Below Coldstream catches appeared a bit quiet for the conditions with 24 Salmon and 7 Sea Trout were landed. The best of the fishing was had at Tillmouth with 14 and 3 Sea Trout, while on Ladykirk 5 were landed.

Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “We had a 12lb on Monday, 13&17lb on Tuesday, a 14lb along with a thin looking grilse of 3lb on Wednesday, only the 2nd one for this year. Not many about but still a good chance for a big fish”

On the tributaries, the main beats on the Till have been picking away steadily this week. Success been had on Lower Tindal 1 Salmon & 5 Sea Trout, Tiptoe 1 Salmon & 6 Sea Trout, While Sea Trout were caught on Redscar & Upper Tindal 6 and Flodden with 10.

Mr David Cowan of Berwick and District Angling Association reports "BDAA Whiteadder still producing some fine sea trout after the recent rise in water as well as an odd salmon. Monday past saw a couple of sea trout, one a nice clean 6lb fish from the lower beats however committee member Dave Paxton fished through the night on Wednesday and as well as a very clean sea trout he also banked a nice salmon of 8 lb. BDAA beats have been fishing very well during the first few weeks of July. In total they have had 8 salmon and 8 sea trout. As well as being very inexpensive the Whiteadder falls very quickly after a spate and while the Tweed remains big the Whiteadder falls away literally overnight providing some great small river sport"

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 6” and the water temperature is 62.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Lower Dryburgh and Ladykirk beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast this coming week looks like we are due some hot and sunny weather with a moderate wind. Chances of showers on Wednesday and toward the weekend.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 10 or 12, If you prefer tubes over dressed flies ¼” and ½” should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Gledswood Shrimp, Ghillie, Pot Belly Pig, Editor Sunray Shadow, Red Frances and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Black/Gold Rapala Tobies in 12gm – 20gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success.
