River Tweed River Report Week Ending 5^th August

Another week of very unsettled river conditions with silly little rises almost daily just keeping the fish of the take. A bit more water pushed through with a near 4ft rise on the Teviot on Thursday, which ran through pretty quick. There continues to be Seals seen in the Milne Graden/Ladykirk area. Some good sized Salmon and Sea Trout were caught over the week with a catch of 169 Salmon and 61 Sea Trout reported with the best fish for the week 21lb Salmon from Upper Makerstoun and 15lb Sea Trout from Bemersyde.

Above Kelso there were 39 Salmon reported with the best of the catches made at on the Makerstoun Beats with 9, Upper Floors 6 & Lower Floors with 10.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Very quiet!”

Upper and Lower Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “9 Salmon for the week, inc a fly caught 21lb fish from the Laird’s Cast. Mr Colin Nicholl also had success”

Between Kelso and Coldstream 95 Salmon and 42 Sea Trout were reported with catches spread out over this area, with the some of the better catches been made on Junction 12 Salmon & 13 Sea Trout, Hendersyde 13 Salmon and 4 Sea Trout, Sprouston 15 Salmon and 11 Sea Trout, Birgham Dub 17 and 6 Sea Trout, Lower North Wark 14, West Learmouth 8 Salmon and the Lees with 9 Salmon.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A frustrating week with too many wee lifts, which are good for the river and shifts fish about but hard going for the rods if the fish don’t stop. Luckily they did on Saturday and we finished the week in style landing 11 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout on the fly. 13 Salmon and 4 Sea Trout for the week”

On Upper North Wark, it was a quiet start to the week, then after the lift of water over night on Thursday we saw quite a few fish running through the snipe on Friday. We finished the week with 2 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout taken on the Carrot Rapala.

Below Coldstream 23 Salmon were landed. The best of the fishing was had at Tillmouth with 7, Milne Graden 4, while on Ladykirk 9 Salmon were landed.

Milne Graden Head Boatman Mr Kevin Wright reports “4 Grilse for the weel all around the 4lb mark. 3 of them on Thursday, 1 was been played as the seal came over the cauld, then another was caught and 1 lost just after it swam through the pool. I have never heard of this before. Lost a couple more fish and a few pulls over the week. Seen fish running most of the week and with a river full of seals no wonder they aren’t hanging about. On Saturday evening we saw a fair few fish bow waving through”

Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Good start on Monday with 4, including biggest for the week, 14lb fresh, for day rod. Rest of the week very unsettled with 1 on Tuesday, tiny grilse of 2lb (hopefully won't see many more of those...). On Thursday, syndicate member got the only 2 fish for the day at 9 and 4 lb. Friday, not to mention, and finishing the week with 2 grilse to syndicate rods. And yes, some seals going about too...”

Mr Douglas Aitken fishing at Ladykirk reports “River unsettled with the very heavy showers so the beats below Coldstream struggled with the rise and colour those above did not fare much better. There were the usual exceptions where the lucky rods found fish and did very well with both Salmon and Sea Trout. With conditions against me I headed to Ladykirk on Saturday evening and saw a good number of fish moving through the Pedwell pool and had a nice wee Grilse. Keep your fly in the water and you may just meet with success”

On the tributaries, the main beats on the Till had a quieter-week with 3 Salmon and 4 Sea Trout reported. Lower Tindal 2 Sea Trout, Flodden 1 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout and Tiptoe with 2 Salmon.

Mr David Cowan of Berwick and District Angling Association reports” Water levels remained under a foot all week which is good for this time of year however there were very few anglers out on the water. Only one Sea Trout to caught despite reports of fish throughout all beats, a nice 21 inch 3lb fish,  caught on size 14 Silver March Brown.”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 10” and the water temperature is 58.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Upper Dryburgh, Milne Graden beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week, while at £60 Upper North Wark provides good value with the chance of a fish.

The forecast this coming week looks quite unsettled with some showery weather forecast with a south westerly breeze. Wednesday looks like the wind will swing to the North before reverting to south west for the rest of the week.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10, If you prefer tubes over dressed flies 1/2” and 3/4” should be about right. Copper Cascade, Cascader, Newtyle Shrimp, Ghillie, Pot Belly Pig, Editor Sunray Shadow, Red Frances and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Carrot Rapala Tobies in 18gm – 20gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success.
