River Tweed River Report Week Ending 2nd September

The nights have started to get a bit cooler last week lowing the water temperature as the week progressed and this brought some of the residents fish on the take.
Catches continue to be below average however rods are reporting that the fish that are being caught are often fresh, silver fish. With the water levels approaching summer levels and not much rain forecast this week, any fish coming in off the tide are likely bring the best sport to the bottom beats. Time will tell….

Above Kelso 68 Salmon were reported with the best of the catches made on the Mertoun beats where 20 were landed, while on Upper Floors 15 were landed.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 68 Salmon were reported with catches spread out over this area, with the some of the better catches being made on Junction 8 Salmon, Hendersyde 10, Sprouston 10, Birgham Dub 11 and the Lees with 9 Salmon.

Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels reports “Lost 3 Salmon at the start of the week, then landed 4 fresh grilse 2nd half of the week, small thin fish. Few old fish splashing about in the pools, odd fresh grilse moving through. Need a flood very soon”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A steady week for us with the rods being rewarded with a little bit of sport from some of the residents with an exception of one fresh grilse. The highlight of the week was when one young angler at 14 caught his 1st salmon. Congratulations Willoughby Norrie and well done for persevering with the fly. We finished the week with 10 Salmon, Biggest 15lb”

On Upper North Wark, The water is getting to the low side for us with the level now off the gauge (-1”) seeing a few fish splashing about in the pools. On Saturday visiting Spanish angler Mr Tomas Diez landed his 1st Scottish salmon with a lovely fresh grilse from the Snipe.

Below Coldstream the conditions were slightly better this week, but a bit quieter than would be expected for the time of the season. 30 Salmon were landed with the best of the catches coming from Tillmouth with 13.

Milne Graden Head Boatman Mr Kevin Wright reports “3 for the week, the odd day you’re seeing a few but not as many as the last few weeks.”

Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “15lb and 9lb on Monday and liced 4lb grilse on Thursday for Ladykirk, caught by same rod, the only able to fish the afternoons (well done Ted!). On Lower Ladykirk we had 5lb grilse on Tuesday and 5lb and 6lb on Wednesday. All a bit quiet considering pretty good river conditions”

Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Erin Hunter reports "1 fresh cock fish @ 7lb from Beat 3 on sz 10 Red Ally on Friday, another 2 lost that same day and on the same beat"

On the tributaries, the main beats on the Till had some catches with Tiptoe 1 Salmon & Flodden 1 Salmon.

Mr Dave Cowan BDAA Secretary reports “The Whiteadder has dropped away over the week-steadily down to two inches. Now at summer low and needing rain to bring the fish up. Beat 5 banked a 5lb grilse and a 2.5 sea trout last night. Both safely returned. Plenty sea trout also seen in the upper beats late into the night however nothing to the net in the upper reaches”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 5” and the water temperature is 54.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest the Ladykirk beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast this coming week looks quite settled with a southerly breeze and a chance of some showers towards the end of the week.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10, If you prefer tubes over dressed flies 3/4” and 1” should be about right. Copper Cascade, Cascader, Newtyle Shrimp, Ghillie, Pot Belly Pig, Editor Sunray Shadow, Red Frances and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Black/Gold Rapala Tobies in 18gm – 20gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie
