River Tweed River Report Week Ending 7th April 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 7th April

After a couple of weeks of some better fishing conditions we were back to miserable rising water on a daily basis. A combination of snow melt and some rain kept the river pretty much unfishable Tuesday to Saturday which resulted in a very low catch for the week. Hopefully things will improve this week and we get back on the river.

Mr Nigel Devine landed a nice fish on the fly from Lower Floors on Friday in rather tricky conditions. Well done.

7 Salmon and 0 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 11lb Salmon caught on the Upper Makerstoun and Birgham Dub Beats.

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder up and down that there is nothing to report this morning at all. Just can’t get on”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3ft 9” and the water temperature is 39.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Upper North Wark beat, with a few fish moving up past Kelso, the Upper Dryburgh beat should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, Tuesday is expected to be a cloudy, windy day with the risk of some rain. There will also be a chance of some patchy rain on Tuesday night, but winds should ease a little. Wednesday, Wednesday night and Thursday will be rather cloudy with the further rain and drizzle at times, although it may become drier and brighter later on Thursday.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Most beats will be fishing various sinking density lines with poly leaders on the end at the time of year it has to be a Black and Yellow and if that fails a Yellow and Black! Copper tubes around 1.5” should be the order of the day, some anglers are choosing to fish more with Aluminium tubes and using the fly line to get down. Pattern’s I would suggest are Black and Yellow (Tosh), Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp and Spring Ghillie should bring success. A wee personal favourite of mine is the Black and Yellow Samurai Shrimp at this time of year. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala, Toby and Devon Minnow fished nice and slow should bring results.
As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
