River Tweed River Report Week Ending 7^th July

Another hot and dry week has pasted and with no real rain on the forecast conditions are far from ideal. Water temperatures are very high and even if you are lucky to land a fish they are very lethargic after the battle and a high risk of them dying. I have heard of some places ceasing to fish until the temperatures get back to sensible levels for the fishes welfare. Water levels are mostly below summer level at the moment one slight plus if there seems to be a few grilse sneaking up the river and reports of fish sitting out in the bay. We will need some serious rain to draw in the fish if they are there as reports suggest.7 of the week’s catch been reported caught above Kelso. 9 fish were reported between Kelso and Coldstream and 11 reported below Coldstream. With the conditions we had on the river this week, well done to those who put the effort in and were rewarded with some sport. This week coming looks quite similar with hot sunshine forecast and very low water conditions, below summer levels on most beats. Dawn and Dusk could be the best times to be fishing.

Mr Nick Bateman landed a fish from the Boat Sheil on Middle Pavilion, while on Pedwell, syndicate member Ian Hook landed a nice fish. South Wark Boatman Mr Lee Ross landed a grilse from the Upper Temple on the fly.

On the River Till, Redscar and Upper Tindal landed 3 Sea Trout, while on Tiptoe 2 Salmon were landed.

27 Salmon and 5 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 14lb Salmon caught on the Tillmouth and Ladykirk Beat’s.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Another hard week. Lost a nice fish around some rocks on Monday morning and that was the only offer we had until a nice 5lb Sea Trout on Thursday evening and 2 fresh grilse on Saturday morning, a case of the early bird gets the worm”

On Upper North Wark, A very hot and sunny week with the water level dropping to minus 6 inch on our gauge making fishing conditions very hard. Last week we welcomed our new full time 2^nd boatman to the beat Mr Richard Farr. Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Nothing to report badly needing rain”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 0” and the water temperature is 68.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Pedwell and Horncliffe beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Breezy on Tuesday with largely dry conditions and sunny spells, albeit some areas of cloud may appear at times, bringing the slim chance of a light shower. Feeling cooler. Wednesday will be fine with sunny spells but breezy at times. Thursday will be generally dry with lengthy periods of sunshine. However, a few showers cannot be ruled out. Feeling warmer once again.

With water levels getting back towards summer levels and the water temperature being in the late 60’s Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 12 to 14 should be the order of the day,  I would suggest are Copper Cascade, Stenton Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp, Kylie Shrimp, Editor and Sunray Shadow should bring success. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala or Toby should bring results.
