River Tweed River Report Week Ending 4^th August

Finally a slight change in the conditions and a couple of small lifts along with some cloud cover seems to have made a bit of difference and some nice fresh fish entered the river. Some good catches were made in the bottom river where you would expect fish to be caught in the current water levels. Tillmouth led the way with 27 for the week, Ladykirk 20, Horncliffe 19 and Tweedhill 13 all had decent weeks. A few fish did creep further up the river with Junction 9, Upper Hendersyde 6, Sprouston 9 and Hendersyde 9 having the best of the fishing between Kelso and Coldstream. Hopefully this week can keep on producing and some sport can be had up and down the river.

12 were reported caught above Kelso, 56 fish were reported between Kelso and Coldstream and 93 reported below Coldstream.

On the River Till, no fish were reported

177 Salmon and 33 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught on the Ladykirk and Horncliffe Beats.

Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Mr Mick Charlton reports “Hi All, with the temperatures both air and water finally starting to drop. Maybe with a little of the wet stuff due fish may finally get the chance to run into the river, and escape from the seal and dolphin infested estuary! Reports from the coast suggest that there are plenty of fish lying offshore. If last week’s numbers are anything to go by 177 salmon off the river, in a couple of small rises there is some hope of fish or two to come.
Since the last update we have had a few fish. A big well done to those who came and had a go in at times unbearable heat! June - First fish of the month was caught by Mr Simon Turner making has annual trip a nice clean fish from the Beech Tree on a silver stoat. That man Mr Tim Briggs was at it again! This time an 8lb fish again from the Beech Tree. The final fish of the month/Spring went to Mr Ian Morgan (pictured) this one came from The Spit.
July - Our first last and only salmon was caught on the 2nd by Mr Nick Bateman an older fish caught in the Boat Shiel on a Gledswood Blue. The only other July fish were a couple of sea trout caught by Mr Stephen Fielding and Mr Jon Hopwood.
With the prospects looking slightly more favourable we still have rods available in the remaining months of the season give me a shout if you fancy a go”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Started the week with a very little but very welcome rise which stirred up some residents. It turned out to be a productive week with the rods landing 9 fish. A mixture of fresh grilse and older salmon”

On Upper North Wark, a small rise at the start of the week gave up a bit of flow but overall not really high enough for us. Did give it a wee cast at the start of the week for 1 good pull. Couple of fish seen but they much be going past us to be caught further upstream.

Norham Castle Syndicate Ghillie Mr Barry Clapham reports “4 salmon on Friday all fresh and safely returned, great days fishing. 2 caught by Mr John Richardson and 2 by myself. Lots of fish in the beat. Some availability at Norham Castle Syndicate”

Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “A good week, finished with 19 salmon landed all clean with sea lice. A further 10 hooked and lost with a total of 19 rod days fished. Plenty of fish still showing and some availability this week with Saturday still having 6 rods available”

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Nothing to report badly needing water”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3” and the water temperature is 65.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Tillmouth, Ladykirk, Pedwell, Horncliffe and Tweedhill beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Fairly cloudy on Tuesday with some drizzle or light showers for a time. Some occasional sunshine is possible. A breezy and cool day. Overnight, some spots of drizzle may linger. Wednesday will see a band of rain tracking north-east. The rain may be heavier overnight. On Thursday, it will remain unsettled and cool with spells of showery rain, some heavy and thundery.

With water levels getting back towards summer levels and the water temperature being in the 60’s Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 12 to 14 should be the order of the day,  I would suggest are Copper Cascade, Stenton Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp, Kylie Shrimp, Editor and Sunray Shadow should bring success. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala or Toby should bring results.
