River Tweed River Report Week Ending 15th September
The week got underway with a hopeful forecast
of some rain due and it came on Tuesday with another small rise which stirred
up the muck and made the river very dirty on Wednesday. Peaking at 2ft 3 at
Sprouston is wasn’t as big as we would like but any rise at the moment is
better than nothing. After the dirty water of Wednesday the catches sprung into
life with 87, 63, and 60 reported on Fishtweed for the 3 days following the
rise. Overall the weekly catch was the best week of the season so far. A real mixture
of colours of fish were landed but it was encouraging to hear of some good
sized sea liced fish been caught. On Saturday the river entered the Fly Only
party of the season which runs 15th September until 30th
November.
Ladykirk and Tillmouth continue to be the best
performing beats with 30 and 38 this week, Milne Graden sandwiched between
these 2 beats managed 16. Below Kelso catch numbers were better this week with
Junction 16, Hendersyde 18, Sprouston 21, Birgham Dub 16 and the Lees 22 having
better fishing. Above Kelso the Mertoun beats with 15 and Dryburgh beats with
13 had the best of the fishing. On Thursday Rutherford had a good day landing 9
fish.
On Middle Pavilion 3 salmon were landed for the
week with success been had by Mr Borras from and Elm Wheil and Mr Tim Briggs
from the Boat Sheil. On the Junction Mr Charlie Palmer and Mr Jeremy Culham had
fish from the Old Bridge ably assisted by boatman Pud Murray. Fishing the
Norham Castle Syndicate water Mr George Baines had a good day landing 3 fish to
15lbs. Mr Steven Hogg, Mr Philip Black, Mr Andy Britton and My James England
all had success on the fly with some nice fish landed. Well done guys. Mr Ian
Hayward landed a cracking 21lb fish from Milne Graden on a size 12 Munro fished
on the dropper.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always
worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the

85 were reported caught above Kelso, 126 fish
were reported between Kelso and Coldstream and 108 reported below Coldstream.
On the River Till, 3 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout
were reported on the Redscar and Upper Tindal beat.
353 Salmon and 39 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 21lb Salmon
caught on the Milne Graden Beat.
Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “The rods had sport
every day this week which is a bonus considering we had a dirty wee lift on
Tuesday leaving a fair bit of colour for the rest of the week. Only having to
resort to the spinner for a token gesture on Wed pm. Plenty action for the next
few days though with both rods having plenty of pulls. Thankfully some were
landed. We ended the week with 18”
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Nice to see
a few more fish this last week than the last few weeks. A bit disappointing
that very few fresh ones seem to be coming up. But any fish is better than no
fish!!”
On Upper North Wark, Finally a small mucky rise that
brought the level up on Tuesday evening and we had 11 inch on the gauge on
Wednesday morning and rather mucky. We saw a few fish up in the Snipe and a
couple in the Dub. Water level was back to 1” by Friday.
Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A slightly better week with the wee rise moving some fish up to us. We had some fresh ones among them the best being an 18lber caught by Paul Collinson. Looks like a lot more rain next week along with some very strong winds so we'll find out what's to come.”
Ladykirk
Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Another good week for us with a
combined catch of 29 (30 reported this week. 1 was from last week), considering
we lost Wednesday due to mega dirty water.
Ladykirk finished with 2 Salmon, up to 11lb, and 2 Grilse and Ladykirk Lower finished with 21 Salmon, up to 19.5lb, and 5 Grilse.
Great day for Ladykirk Lower Gillies on Saturday, catching 4 Salmon and 1 Grilse of the 7 reported, including best for 2018, a liced cracker of just under 19.5 lb. Well done again Dave.
Let’s hope there’s a few more of these big fish to arrive”

Horncliffe
Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “Better week this week lost two days due
to high water and too much colour, ended with 12 for the week that puts us on
95 for the season.. Don't know if we'll hit the 100 this week as there's a flood
on the way. There's a nice bottle up for grabs for the person who gets the
100th fish, so get booking”
Dave Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling
Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Still not enough water in the
Whiteadder to see any great run of fish into the tributary. Rain forecast for Saturday night through to Sunday
could increase the prospects for the start of the week.”
The week ended with the level at Sprouston 7” and the water temperature
is 56.
Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Tillmouth,
Ladykirk, and Horncliffe beats should have a chance of some action this week.
If you fancy the middle river Rutherford will be worth a cast. Big of rain
forecast so always worth keep an eye on the levels for Upper North Wark.
The
forecast this coming week, Tuesday will be windy with a
scattering of showers, these could be heavy and thundery. Heavy, showery rain
may spread east overnight with a risk of thunderstorms mixed-in. Wednesday may
become very windy with gales and it will continue unsettled with heavy showers
or longer spells of rain. Feeling much cooler. Staying breezy on Thursday with
further widespread showers.

With water levels up and down like a yoyo recently but still no real
flood and the temperature is back into the 50s. Floating lines with poly
leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment, maybe
pack an intermediate line just incase its required. Dressed flies around a size
8 to 10 should be the order of the day, in the deeper pools it might be worth a
try with little 1/2” or 3/4” copper tubes. I would suggest are Copper Cascade,
Black Frances, Gledswood Shrimp, Kylie Shrimp, Red Frances and Sunray Shadow should
bring success. The river is now fly only until the end of the season on the 30th
November.
