Pre Season River Tweed Report Opening Day Friday 1st February 2019.
As the bells chimed to welcome the New Year while sitting with fellow fishermen in the Contented Vine restaurant our discussions turned to the excitement of a new season and what it might bring. Will there be good water conditions? Will there be a revival in the runs of fish?
2019 will see the end of North East Drift Net Fishery. This should make a difference to the numbers of fish entering the East Coast Rivers and with some reasonable conditions and a bit of luck an increase to the catches.
The Upper North Wark beat have been running a competition to win spring salmon fishing on the beat. The competition closes tonight (27th) at 19:00 To enter go to http://www.uppernorthwarkfishing.com/contact-usand fill in the contact us box.
For those still looking for some early season fishing there is availability on some fabled beats. Hendersyde and Sprouston have limited days available and further down river Lower Birgham and Upper North Wark beats offer some great value fishing with a real chance of an early fish. If the weather remains mild, Upper and Lower Floors along with the Junction could see some early season action.
As I type the river is currently sitting at 1ft 8 on the Sprouston Gauge with some unsettled weather on the forecast it may be up or down come opening day on Friday.
Early season tactics intermediate and sink 2 lines with assorted poly leaders should cover most areas currently with the tried and tested Black and Yellow, Monkey and Gold Bodied Willie Gunn should bring results.
The forecast for the coming week, Cloudy at times and cold on Tuesday with the risk of a few showery outbreaks of rain and hill snow. Drier and cold on Tuesday night with a risk of ice. Wednesday is expected to have sunny spells but wintry showers may spread from the west later on. Staying cold into Thursday with a risk of sleet and snow spreading from the south-west later on.
