River Tweed River Report Week Ending 6th April

Another week ruined by a snow melt rise and some east coast rain with brought in a fair bit of colour and made Thursday and Friday pretty much a wash out along with the arrival of the east wind conditions were much colder than they had been.

Gledswood got their first of the season caught by ghillie Andrew Rohleder, Dryburgh Upper got off and running to with a lovely fish landed by Ghillie Brian Douglas on a Gledswood Shrimp, Norham Castle Water also got off and running for the season with a sea liced 8lber. Fishing on the Junction with boatman Pud Murray, Mr Oliver Wright landed his first springer.

Upper Floors (six) Lees (five) and Lower North Wark who continued their fine start to the season with 5 for the week had the best of the fishing. On the Lees Mr Will Haggas, Mr Philip Slane, Mr Jonathan Reddin and Mr Steve Robbins were the successful angler on the beat with all on the fly. On Upper North Wark with Robert Cameron landed his 1st fish from the beat and also lost 1.

Heard reports from the TAS beat on the Whiteadder of Mr Alan Lumsden landed a 9lb fish on a Tosh also Finlay Hogg landed fish of 5lb, 6lb and 8lb.

Calling all Scottish anglers - was your member of parliament listening to Rachel Hamilton today highlighting the downturn in salmon numbers etc. This really is worth watching.

40 Salmon and 8 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 15lb Salmon caught on the Lower Makerstoun beat.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Disappointed in the number of fish above floors last week was expecting more up here today just little pockets about still not seen a fish this year”

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A difficult week due to weather and water conditions but Will Haggas landed a belter in learmouth stream on Tuesday morning at 16lb straight off the tide, Claire Haggas lost one in the Slap and had a wee sweary. That was all the action until Saturday when in very dark beery water we had 4 fresh fish all on the fly. Philip Slane getting 2, Jonathan Reddin 1 and Steve Robbins 1”

On Upper North Wark, a quieter week with 1 landed and 2 lost, Mr Robert Cameron landed a nice sea liced fish on Saturday and lost 1. Thursday and Friday was ruined by dirty water.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Water levels on Whiteadder up and down all week settling out at 2ft Saturday night. If we get no more rain the river could be in perfect condition for Monday. No fish reported on BDAA water this week”

Hawick Angling Club reports “Acreknowe was stocked again this week. Reasonable catches are being made but the continuous cold wind does not make for pleasant fishing. On the odd day that the wind has dropped a few fish can be seen rising. Lures continue to take the majority of fish. Williestruther was also stocked this week. Power bait taking the majority of fish. Barnes Loch has been lightly fished but some fish have been taken on dry fly.Tickets can be purchased from the usual outlets.

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 2” and the water temperature is 44.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Dryburgh Upper, Milne Graden and ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, some areas of low cloud and hill fog to start tomorrow, but these should disperse to leave some good spells of sunshine for most again. Wednesday is expected to be dry with sunny spells, but cloud may linger in some areas. Thursday is expected to be dry with a few bright spells, but cloud will push in from the east, limiting the brightness. Friday will see little change, with a lot of cloud expected and only occasional bright spells. It will remain cool for the time of year.

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, water levels are dropping in now and conditions are looking a more settled this week. Floating or Intermediate lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Black and Yellow, Gledswood Shrimp, Monkey, Spring Ghillie all capable to tempting that springer on inch to inch and a half tubes. On the spinning front the Blue Rapala, 18-28gm tobies should bring results.
