With the 2016 season now resigned to the history books, we can now look forward with new enthusiasm with the 2017 Tweed salmon fishing season.
The winter has been generally mild and dry with just a couple of small floods, so hopefully it’s been a good spawning season and with opening day fast approaching the boatmen and ghillie’s will be busy preparing their beats for the start of the new season.
If the 5 year cycle for returning spring salmon holds true we should
see a good numbers of spring fish come back to the river this year
following the pleasing spring fishing we enjoyed in 2012.
Currently as I write, Tweed is 1ft 2” on the Sprouston Gauge and the water temperature is 42 degrees. The weathermen are suggesting we are going to get some much colder weather in the next few days and there is some rain on the radar for the 31st January, but we remain optimistic for reasonable river conditions for opening day.
As it has been such a mild winter, we would expect there to be fish spread throughout the lower and middle river.
Given Current river conditions we would suggest that intermediate lines and various poly leaders should suffice with a wet II or equivalent in the bag for the deeper or faster flows, but come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
Fly choice at this time of year normally falls back to the same loyal fish catching patterns. Black and Yellow, Gold Bodied Willie Gunn, Monkey patterns will all account for the Springer’s over the early part of the season.
Anglers looking to come to Tweed for the first time are reminded that the whole river is fly only from the 1st - 14th February.
