River Tweed River Report Week Ending 5th May 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 5th May

Another tough week battling winds and a small rise midweek, but catches remain on the low side for the time of year.

Above Kelso 20 fish were reported, Fishing on Middle Pavilion Mr Steve Howard landed a nice fish on a Gledswood Shrimp from the Spit. On Dryburgh Upper, Wednesday proved to be a very good day with 3 Springers landed, Mr Ginger Cuthbert landed 2 and Mr Fraser Thomson landing 1. The best of the fishing was at Middle Mertoun where 5 fish were reported.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 20 fish were reported with Junction 6, Hendersyde 4, Sprouston 7 having the best of the fishing. Mr Ian Bailey landed a nice fish from the Junction.

Below Coldstream 7 fish were reported, Ladykirk got of an running for the season with fish landed on Wednsday and Friday both fish from West Ford, the latter been landed by Mr Spencer Tolley on the fly.

53 Salmon and 6 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 14lb Salmon caught on the Dryburgh Lower Beat.

On Upper North Wark, a tough week battling the winds, a 9 inch rise on Wednesday gave us a bit of water on Thursday but no results.

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “One fish for the week, a nice 9lb salmon caught again by Dave Paxton on Thursday. Whiteadder now settled at 8 inches so we need some rain.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 10” and the water temperature is 50.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the West Learmouth, Ladykirk and Pedwell beats, if you fancy fishing the middle river, the Upper Dryburgh & Lower Dryburgh beats should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, Tuesday will be cloudy and cooler with a little rain for a time. Sunny spells will then develop but there will also be a risk of a few showers. A stiff breeze. Wednesday will be fairly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle and strengthening south-westerly winds. Unsettled and windy on Thursday with showers or spells of rain. A cool day.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

With water levels finally starting to drop in and water temperatures starting to rise Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 8 to 10 should be the order of the day,  I would suggest are Copper Cascade, Girnel Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp and Underghillie should bring success. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala, Toby or Flying C should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
