River Tweed River Report Week Ending 19th May

Another tough week with rather bright conditions with temperature getting near the 20’s most days of the week, with this the water level has continued to drop and is nearing summer level, which should suit the bottom beats if the fish start to appear.

Above Kelso 10 fish were reported, with Middle Pavilion 2, Middle Mertoun 3 and Rutherford 2 having the best of the fishing.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 18 fish were reported, Junction 5, Hendersyde 4 and Birgham Dub with 7 had the best of the fishing last week. Mr John Slapp fishing on the Junction landed his first salmon a lovely 10lber, while on the same beat Mr Bob Hesketh landed a nice fish from Hempseedford. On Hendersyde Professor Stuart Reid landed his first ever salmon a nice 10lber taken on the fly. Well done Guys.

Below Coldstream 15 fish were reported, Tillmouth 5 and Ladykirk 6 had the best of the fishing. Mr Jonathan Lane landed a lovely sea liced fish from Ladykirk on Saturday using the deadly Ghillie fly from www.taysalmonfly.co.uk. Well done Sir.

48 Salmon and 3 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 13lb Salmon caught on the Hendersyde and Ladykirk Beat’s.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A slow but steady week with the days getting a bit sunny for us and the river falling back to summer level as the week went on. The rods did manage to land 4 nice fish though. We had extra reason to celebrate on Tuesday when Professor Stuart Reid caught his first ever salmon, a nice 10lber on the fly. All things considered a good result given the conditions”

On Upper North Wark, Hot, bright and low water conditions didn’t really suit us onwards and upwards and a rain dance required!

Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “At last a better week for us with 10lb on Tuesday and 10lb on Thursday to same rod, and then 8lb & 12lb on Friday and syndicate rods had a good, but very bright Saturday afternoon with 10lb & 13lb. All cracking springer’s and all liced apart from 1.”

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “BDAA had one fish for the week however with the Whiteadder at 5inches prospects for next week are not brilliant. Fish are moving in to the river but we need some water.”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 4” and the water temperature is 55.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Tweedhill, Horncliffe, Ladykirk and Pedwell, Rutherford beats should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, It will be mainly dry but largely cloudy at first on Tuesday. However, it will brighten up with long sunny spells expected later in the day. Feeling cooler in moderate north-easterly winds. Wednesday and Thursday will be fine with plenty of sunshine and just a little cloud. It will feel increasingly warm. Some mist or low cloud may form after dusk.

With water levels finally starting to drop in and water temperatures starting to rise Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 8 to 10 should be the order of the day,  I would suggest are Copper Cascade, Girnel Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp, Underghillie and Sunray Shadow should bring success. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala, Toby or Flying C should bring results.
