River Tweed River Report Week Ending 18^th February 

 The river rose over 3ft on Sunday and this brought in a lot of colour which hung about at the start of the week with Monday and Tuesday pretty much been a complete wash out apart from a token gesture on a few beats.

On Wednesday the water clarity started to improve and fish started been caught.

 The Junction beat landed 7 for the week with some beautiful fish landed, the best at 16lbs. The O’Donnell party landed 2 fish at 8lb and 1 at 15lbs on Wednesday, 2 on Friday; 8lbs and 16lbs respectively. On Saturday the Bailey party landed 2 fish, again both typical Tweed spring fish tipping the scales at weighing 8lbs.

At Upper Hendersyde Mr Ally Middlemass landed a couple of fresh Sea Trout. Whilst at Birgham Dub Mr Brian Douglas landed a lovely fish on which was one of two caught on the beat.

It's always great to hear of rods catching their first fish and this time it was the turn of Mr Luke Taylor-Balls who landed his 1^st ever Salmon at Lower Birgham,  A superb, bright fish of 13lbs. On the same day Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis added to beats tally with a cracking fish of 16lbs.

Upper North Wark landed there first fish on the season on Wednesday with Mr David Steele catching a cracking fresh Springer of 7lbs. On Friday a 5lb fish was landed then followed by a very special moment for Head Boatman Martin Ritchie as he rowed his 8 year old son Hayden onto his first salmon casting by himself. After a bit of advice his 7lb Springer was safely in the net. He was one very chuffed boy. 

West Learmouth got off and running with 2 fish on Friday and with fish also reported at Lower Dryburgh and Drygrange it would appear that the mild conditions are helping a few fish head up through the system.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 6” and the water temperature is 41.

Looking ahead to next week the forecast looks quite settled with some strong winds middle of the week. We have had a wee lift over Sunday which was probably snow melt. When I was down the river this morning the clarity was still very good. Looking at what flies and lures for the coming week I’d expect the Black and Yellow, Blacko’s Dee Special and Monkey style patterns to continue to bring success, while on the spinning front the Blue Rapala and Tobies around 20gm – 28gm should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
