River Tweed River Report Week Ending 25th February 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 25th February

The week started with very strong south westerly winds making fishing conditions quite challenging and as the week went on the wind stayed and the rains came.

On Monday Upper North Wark report losing a nice fish right at the bank and a couple of kelts. On the other bank at South Wark fish were landed on Monday and Tuesday.

On Tuesday the Junction landed a cracking 22lb long tailed liced fish on a Cascade Tube Fly, then later in the day they lost a fish 3 yards from the boat which boatman Pud Murray estimated to be 30+lb. On Birgham Dub a 17lb long tailed licer was also caught.

22lber From The Junction

On Wednesday the rive rose steadily all day with Rutherford getting on the score sheet with a 8lber.
Thursday to Saturday we were hit by heavy rain and snow melt and the river rose to nearly 8ft at Sprouston on Saturday. Dirty brown water and strong winds meant not many beats fished these days.

Lower Birghams Toasty Fire

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 7ft 10” and the water temperature is 40.

 Saturday At Upper North Wark

Looking ahead to next week the forecast looks quite settled once this band of rain due today (Sunday) passes over. The water is very dirty this morning and I’d think it will be a few days before it clears to a fishable colour. Looking at what flies and lures for the coming week I’d expect the Black and Yellow, Blacko’s Dee Special and Monkey style patterns to continue to bring success once the water clarity improves, while on the spinning front the “Carrot” Rapala and Toby Salmo should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
