River Tweed River Report Week Ending 30th September 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 30th September
That phrase again! Unsettled water pretty much all week ruined the fishing below Kelso, with daily rises and lots of colour was the story for the week. The old fish continue to be seen making their way upstream to the spawning grounds, but still no real sign of any fresh fish in decent numbers entering the river so far does appear to be the odd ones around. Do we need a big flood? Or just some settled conditions? So many questions and not any answers to give. A week of settled conditions might give a better idea but this week ahead looks challenging with strong winds forecast and more rain midweek.

127 Salmon and 25 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 22lb Salmon caught on the Tweedswood Beat.

Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Mr Mick Charlton reports for the month “The month got off to a slow start with nothing landed until the 12th!
Mr Neil Sayers finally got us off the mark. Neil's first fish was caught in the Boat Shiel on Willie Gunn, the following day he added a second from the Elm Weil. The same day Mr Thor Jacobson from Norway, caught a Salmon and a Sea trout both from the Boat Shiel salmon on a Junction Shrimp, sea trout on a red Francis. The 16th and that man Tim Briggs added to his total with one from the Whirls on an Ally shrimp. Mr Nick Bateman caught a brace on the 18th one from the Whirls on a Tosh, another from the Boat Shiel on an Ally Shrimp. Nick followed this with our largest fish so far this season on the 20th an 18lb fish from the Boat Shiel on the Tosh again. Next to land a fish were the French boys on their annual visit Mr Guy Nardin landed the first one from the Boat Sheil on a Junction shrimp. The same day Mr Christophe Cuenot landed his first from the beat again in the Boat Sheil this time on a Posh Tosh, he followed this up the next day with a fish from the Beech Tree. Mr Tim Briggs returned for the last two days of the month and all but made sure he retains his top rod trophy! Tim's first fish came from the Bridge pool on a St Clemence, the following day Tim added another brace to his total this time from the boat in the Elm weil, one on the St Clemence one on the Ally Shrimp. We still have rods available in the next 2 months if anyone fancy's a cast, contact Mick on 07932 105544”

Tweedswood Head Ghillie Mr Kevin Patterson reports “With the backend taking its first tentative steps it looks like a full spread of fish from top to bottom this is great for the river as a whole and what the backend fishing is all about whether they are coloured or fresh it’s just so nice to fish over salmon in the pools on the fly that might not take it but from a fishers point it’s good to see. There's nothing worse for the moral than going all day and seeing nothing move in the beat you are fishing and in our area middle tweed there certainly was plenty fish on the move and sitting put in the pools so everyone going out to fish from Tweedswood upstream to Dawyck i am sure will see fish and who knows with prices to suit all might just catch one as well. The leaves are taking on that yellow and orange hue that only this Valley can display it’s such a magic time with stormy lighting one minute then full sun September can just be a great time to be on the river it’s my Favourite month and i totally feel that it’s going to be a very important month catch wise in coming years with a definite swing to early running fish throughout the season .The coming week we are very lightly let which is strange after a great last week catching fish most days plus losing quite a few and priced at what I would say was a fantastic price at Tweedswood we have done what we can to keep competitive but give people the chance to come out you get great value for money we fish very hard and have full on Facilities even Electric know in the fishing hut and with it not getting dark till 7-30 you can if you still have the energy fish on . Plus having a fully qualified casting instructor and Loop tackle to try out rod and wader hire plus flies there's really not much more we can do to get people on the banks of the River. Hope to see some new faces on the bank soon i can tell you the ones we have had so far will certainly be back in the future give me a call on 07971828086 on anything fishing related or about this article I am sorry but I would put up pictures but this format doesn't do it but I am assured by Fish pal that the new web site will allow ghillies to put up pictures on their page that will for sure make me more active in my reports cheers Tight lines get out there and get one caught .
Rods available at Tweedswood 2017 via fish pal OCT 9th 2 rods ,10th 2 rods ,11th 5 rods ,12th 4 rods prime time , 14th 2 rods 19th 2rods ,20th 2 rods ,21st 2 rods ,23rd 1 rod ,27th 2 rods ,NOV 2nd 4 rods ,3rd , 3 rods. Tweedswood is fishing very well with no gravel for first time in a while affecting any pools Oct fishing is the best there is”

Above Kelso 62 Salmon were reported with the catches in dribs and drabs from Dawyck to Floors, Boleside finished the week well with 4 On Friday and 7 On Saturday.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 43 Salmon were reported with scattered one’s and Hendersyde having a good day on Saturday landed 8 Salmon, while on the Junction Mr Giles Wilson landed a cracking 14lbs Sea Trout.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Another struggle with an unsettled river. Seem to have lost a few of our residents that had been hanging about with us for too long. We ended the week with a bit of luck with 8 Salmon on Saturday, giving us 10 for the week”

On Upper North Wark, A very frustrating week with dirty water most days.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “Only 3 at the Lees this week and a few that fell off, no fresh/silver ones and didn’t see any either. Quite a few fish running through the slap this morning (Saturday) Water up and down all week didn’t help”

Below Coldstream fishing conditions weren’t really suitable and just 7 Salmon were landed.

Milne Graden Head Boatman Mr Kevin Wright reports “1 Sea Trout all week, no other pulls. Seen 2 freshish fish all week and the odd head of older fish running”

On the tributaries, the main beats on the Till were quieter this week with Flodden 1 and Redscar and Upper Tindal 2. While on the Ettrick, Middle Ettrick beat landed 3.

Mr David Cowan of Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary reports” Whiteadder started the week with low water levels but a rise to a ft on Wednesday into Thursday resulted in three fish for the end of the week to 12 lb. More rain expected Sunday so river could be in good condition for next week”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 6” and the water temperature is 52.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Middle Pavilion and Rutherford beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast this coming week looks rather unsettled with some strong winds pushing gale-force at the start of the week and Wednesday looks rather wet. Currently the river is rising again tonight.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have information and photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Water temperatures are starting to cool down dressed flies in sizes 6 or 8, if you prefer tubes over dressed flies 3/4” and 1” should be about right. Copper Cascade, Tritton Shrimp, Newtyle Shrimp, Ghillie, Pot Belly Pig, Snaelda, Red Frances. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
