River Tweed River Report Week Ending 28th October 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 28th October

Finally a settled week with just a couple of small lifts in water from the Ettrick and Teviot but the time they reached the main stem the levels remained largely steady.

As the week progressed the water dropped slowly giving pretty good fishing conditions. High winds made fishing a bit more challenging on Saturday though. The fish have continued to push up through the system to the spawning grounds with the bulk of the weekly catch been caught well above Kelso. Catches were slightly better below Kelso this week, but still a long way from what they should be for the time of the year. Some fresher fish were caught in the past week some been liced.

208 Salmon and 28 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 30lb Salmon caught on the Boleside Beats.

Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Coling Pringle reports “The Zirngibl Party from Bavaria were happy with the 2 fish despite near perfect conditions for this time of year”

Above Kelso 108 Salmon were reported with the best of the catches made on the Traquair 17, Holylee 7, Fairnilee 10 and Boleside 8.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 75 Salmon were reported with Junction 7, Upper Hendersyde 8, Hendersyde 10, Birgham Dub 7, Lower North Wark 16, South Wark 9 & Lees 9 having the better of the fishing in far from ideal conditions.

Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels reports “Better week, 8 fish mostly old, hopefully settled conditions will continue”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Finally got a couple of days of settled river at the end of the week. Fish now showing in the lies instead of been scattered all over the beat. Ended up with 8 for the week, biggest 17lbs plus 2 grilse with lice. Also had a good sized sea trout of 9lbs”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Saw very few, one very fresh and one very old fish for the week”

On Upper North Wark, pretty quiet this week with 1 pull on Friday. Seems to be a few fish in the Wark area just not with us.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “Water levels suiting us now and the colour is spot on. 9 for the week and a couple lost. Nice 12lb licer for Mark Newstead from 7the cauld on a Willie Gunn tube. We're fishing float/sink tip lines and any fly you like, you just need to find the fish that wants it. Not so many fish on the beat now and the bottom end is very quiet. As long as levels keep dropping slowly that'll do us fine”

Below Coldstream conditions were better than they have been for the last few weeks but only 1 Salmon was landed on the Tillmouth Beat.

Milne Graden Head Boatman Mr Kevin Wright reports “No fish for the week, 1 pull, most days not even seeing a fish”

On the tributaries, the main beats on the Till were quiet this week with no fish reported. Over on the River Ettrick the Middle Etrrick beat landed 3, while on the Teviot no fish were reported.

Good news from the Ettrick. Last week saw some encouraging catches even with the river being too high to fish on some days. The Bowhill River keeper mentioned "that is was good to see the salmon in the river this season" the river has suffered from a real lack of water for the last couple of season. If you have not experienced fishing the river, have a go!! Be warned there is quite a lot of walking on the river and more so on the Upper beats.

Mr David Cowan of Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary reports” Week commenced with Whiteadder at 1ft resulting in two fish on Monday. Levels dropped all week to 6 inches however that didn’t stop a guest rod banking 2 fish to 10 lb and losing a third fish on Saturday

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 3” and the water temperature is 50.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Upper Hendersyde & Lower Birgham beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast this coming week looks a lot more settled with some rain on Monday night on the radar, apart from that looks like a good drop in the temperature and a bit of wind as the week progresses.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have information and photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
Water temperatures are starting to cool down dressed flies in sizes 6 or 8, if you prefer tubes over dressed flies 1” and 1.5” should be about right. Copper Cascade, Tritton Shrimp, Newtyle Shrimp, Ghillie, Pot Belly Pig, Snaelda, Red Frances & Junction Shrimp should bring success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
