River Tweed River Report Week Ending 7th October 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 7th October 2017

Yet again another frustrating week with unsettled water and a bigger rise on Thursday which ruined the fishing that day. Old fish continue to be seen in most beats with some fresher fish been caught towards the end of the week and more been seen running with their heads down. With the constant little rises most weeks the fish are pushing right up through  the upper river with the bulk of the weekly catch just now been caught above Kelso. Fresh fish have been reported as far up the river as Holylee, so these fish must be running very hard or getting the bus! Best fishing of the week was had on the Lees beat where 49 Salmon were landed but only 5 fresh.

Mr Nick Bob Turner fishing on Middle Pavilion landed his first ever salmon, while Mr Dilon Jones landed 1 in the Boat Sheil.

Mr Dominic Waters fishing on Lower Floors landed 3 salmon with the best been a superb 21lb fresh fish taken on a DB Tosh tube on Tuesday 3rd Oct 2017 from Garden Wall Pool.

On the Junction, the Mattioli Party picked away and finished with 14 for the week.

296 Salmon and 19 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 21lb Salmon caught on the Lower Pavilion Beat.

Above Kelso 135 Salmon were reported with the best of the catches made on the Middle Mertoun 10, Makerstoun Beats 12 & The Floors Beats with 11.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr report’s “7 for the week, nothing clean but seen some fresh fish going past. Water has not helped with up and down levels, but on Wednesday we landed 5 all on smaller flies as the water cleared up. Disappointed on Saturday, nearly perfect water and no fish in the book. Let’s hope we get them this week”

Bemersyde Fishing report “5 fish to 14lbs on Wednesday. River 1ft on the gauge and clear, caught using size 8's 10's small flies. 2 from the Cromwiel the first two out of there this year, Brian Summers 14lbs and Brian Skew 10lbs. Angus had one from Woodside 14lbs and Neil Sawyers had two, one from the Stream 10lbs and one from Sangsters. Ian Farr commented that despite yesterday’s fish being coloured there was a few fresh ones seen"

Between Kelso and Coldstream 127 Salmon were reported with Junction 14, Hendersyde 10, Sprouston 9, Birgham Dub 7, Lower North Wark 15, South Wark 11 & Lees 49 having the better of the fishing.

Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Mr Robert Jewels reports “Well done Sarah Gardener landing her first salmon weighing 15lbs. Only 4 for the week, in difficult unsettled conditions with wind and water. Hope for better this week coming up ”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Managed to pick away most days in what was less than ideal conditions, one angler Mr Bob Dale had a successful trip catching his first ever salmon, a 17lber followed up by a couple more the following day. Finished the week with 10 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout”

On Upper North Wark, A very frustrating week with water levels and clarity not the best, we lost Thursday with a rising dirty river. Mr Hugh Newton landed a nice sea liced Grilse on Saturday and had a brief encounter with another fish.

Below Coldstream conditions were far from suitable and with this only 9 Salmon were landed.

Milne Graden Head Boatman Mr Kevin Wright reports “Two for the week, one sea licer at 4lbs and an old 18lber on Saturday. Need settled water to stand the chance of fish stopping. Had more seals during the week”

Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Tricky river conditions for us again this week. Finished with 3 fish between 9 and 15lb and small fresh grilse of 3lb on the upper beats (1 rod had 3 salmon to himself!). On the lower beats we finished with 1 salmon, 12lb”

On the tributaries, the main beats on the Till were quiet this week with no fish reported. Over on the River Ettrick the Middle Etrrick beat landed 2.

Mr David Cowan of Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary reports” Whiteadder saw a brief rise in water on Friday resulting in 3 fish to 12 lb from upper beats all safely returned”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 7” and the water temperature is 49.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Bemersyde, Upper Makerstoun and Junction beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast this coming week looks a bit more settled with the odd showers on the radar with mainly west to south westerly winds.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have information and photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Water temperatures are starting to cool down dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10, if you prefer tubes over dressed flies 3/4” and 1” should be about right. Copper Cascade, Tritton Shrimp, Newtyle Shrimp, Ghillie, Pot Belly Pig, Snaelda, Red Frances. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
