River Tweed River Report Week Ending 23rd June 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 23rd June

The best weekly catch of the season so far was landed last week, although the season so far is well done on average it was nice to see some better numbers of fish caught. Again similar to last week there is a fair mixture from fresh sea licers to some older fish that are moving up through the system with 39 of the week’s catch been reported caught above Kelso. 45 fish were reported between Kelso and Coldstream and 29 reported below Coldstream. With blistering hot sunshine forecast for this coming week and low water, Dawn and Dusk could be the best times to be fishing.

Tillmouth had the best of the fishing last week landing 16 fish and 6 sea trout with the best a superb 12lber. West Learmouth had a decent week landing 13. On Middle Pavilion Mr Ian Morgan landed a lovely fresh fish from the Spit.

The Dryburgh beats continue to fish well with 11 Salmon and 3 Sea Trout been reported over both beats. Mr Clive Pickering had a nice 6lb fish from the Boat Pool on a Micro Posh tube fly, in the same pool Mr Sam Thomson landed a fine fish and Mr Duncan Jack landed 2 from the beat for his trip.

Mr Alex Knox of the fabulous must visit Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso landed 2 nice fish from Lower Floors.

On the River Till, the Sea Trout catches have fairly picked up in the last week or so and 13 were reported last week, with Redscar and Upper Tindal having the best of the catches with 9.

122 Salmon and 40 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught on the Junction Beat.

On Upper North Wark, A welcome rise midweek to give us some water to fish in at long last although it didn’t last long. A bit of long overdue sport was had towards the end of the week. Mr Spencer Tolley losing a good fish in the Snipe, Mr Scott Mason having brief contact on the fly in the Mill Stream, with quite a few fish been seen in the Dub in the afternoon, we finally managed to intercept one with Mr Connor Meiklejohn working his magic to land a fine 8lber on a toby. Mr Stuart Norris got in on the action in the evening landed a lovely 8lb fish on a Dunkeld fly.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “Brian Cook from Norfolk caught his 1st ever salmon on Monday in the Slap, a fresh 8lber and followed it up with his 2nd, a fresh 4lber from the Glide. Both on a wee Cascade”

Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “Three fish hooked unfortunately only 1 landed a beautiful clean 16lb cock fish. Only 4 rod days fished this week. Some availability next week and river levels are good. The track right down to the fishing hut has now been resurfaced and it is suitable for all vehicles”

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder in low summer conditions and without some rain prospects are not good for the week ahead. Fish in the river but conditions are very challenging.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 6” and the water temperature is 60.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Dryburgh Lower and Upper Beats, Ladykirk, Horncliffe and Tweedhill beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Monday will be dry, warm and mainly sunny with only a little cloud bubbling up. Overnight will be dry and clear with light winds, perhaps allowing a few mist patches to form. High pressure will continue to dominate through Tuesday and Wednesday keeping it dry with plenty of sunshine through the day time and clear periods by night. Remaining warm.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

With water levels getting back towards summer levels and the water temperature being in the 60’s Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 10 to 12 should be the order of the day,  I would suggest are Copper Cascade, Stenton Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp, Kylie Shrimp, Editor and Sunray Shadow should bring success. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala or Toby should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 16th June 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 16th June

Another week with quite unsettled water conditions with a small rise on Wednesday night into Thursday making the river dirty and this kept a black tinge to the river for the rest of the week. Fishing continues to be sporadic with better days than others, was quite chuffed after reporting last week that Sea Trout were starting to appear in the Nith area that here was a better week with the Sea Trout catch been the highest of the season so far. The Salmon catches were also better with the rise in water moving the fish up through the system with 37 of the week’s catch been reported caught above Kelso. Below Kelso did struggle a bit due to the water colour with 27 reported between Kelso and Coldstream and 11 reported below Coldstream. There were numerous reports of lost fish during the week, maybe just not taking well with the unsettled conditions.

There seems to be a mixture of fish getting caught from older spring fish to fresh sea liced summer salmon, there are odd reports of Grilse starting to appear. Conditions look a bit more settled this coming week, so hopefully get a few more fish caught.

Dryburgh Upper had a good end to the week with Fraser, Ginger and Leigh Final getting the fish, Dryburgh Lower finished the week with 6. On Bemersyde Mr Andrew Robinson landed a nice fish. Mertoun Beats with 8 and Rutherford with 6 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout had the best of the fishing this week, one of the Sea Trout was 10 and a half pounds.

I would like to highlight as I get asked at times why there are no reports from certain beats/areas. I can only report on what I get told about or see. If you have anything that you would like to be included in the report please send me the information thanks.

82 Salmon and 32 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 16lb Salmon caught on the Tweedhill Beat.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Another week of dirty wee lifts which take forever to clear, combined with some high winds makes for some challenging conditions but we managed to land a couple of fresh fish. At least the ducks have had a good start to their breeding season with some fairly good sized clutches”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Nice to have some luck at last and plenty of action towards the end of the week. Most on the fly aswell, here is hoping that some more are here this week”

On Upper North Wark, conditions continue to be against us! Couple of decent lumps of rain on the forecast last week and no real rise of any note. Fishing remains priced at £25prpd for the whole of June.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “6 fish for the week and a couple of other pulls. 5 of the fish fresh and one old springer. Other fish seen moving. Water very beery second half of the week and storm Hector made casting on Thursday next to impossible, we could only fish two pools due to the wind. All the fish on #8 apart from one on Sunray”

Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “One fish landed on Monday and three lost on Saturday. Very little angling pressure again, the waters dropping in nice at the moment and plenty of availability for the forthcoming week still only £45 per rod per day”

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Nothing to report this week”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 9” and the water temperature is 60.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Dryburgh Lower and Upper Beats, Lower Birgham, Ladykirk, Horncliffe and Tweedhill beats should have a chance of some action this week, if there is any rise in water Upper North Wark at £25 per rod per day could be a good shout.

The forecast this coming week, Tuesday looks to be rather unsettled, with showers or longer spells of rain, some of this could be on the heavy side, particularly overnight. Cloudy for the most part on Wednesday with a mixture of showers and drier interludes. High pressure is expected to build in on Thursday, allowing for a return to largely dry and settled conditions.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

With water levels finally starting to drop in and water temperatures starting to rise Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 10 to 12 should be the order of the day,  I would suggest are Copper Cascade, Stenton Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp, Kylie Shrimp, Editor and Sunray Shadow should bring success. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala, Toby or Flying C should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
