River Tweed River Report Week Ending 22nd April 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 22nd April

Last week saw no real improvement in the catches with just the odd fish here and there throughout the river. The weather remained pretty settled with some days of brisk westerly winds.

Middle Pavillion had 2 for the week Inc one for Mr Mickley from the Whirls

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr Reports “Had a sea liced fish on Wednesday for Mr John Murray and a very fresh one on Friday for Mr Borras. Not much fly life about and even fewer trout”

Speaking with Makerstoun's Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle, "2 from Upper this week. Mr Alex Knox owner of The Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso, landed 1 on Monday”

On the Junction, the Langford Party had 3 for the week Inc a nice fish for John Taylor.

On Upper Hendersyde, Mr Jim Reid landed a nice 8lber on the fly from the Wintercast on Friday.

Sprouston landed 2 fish for the week. Both been caught on Monday with the best being 15lbs.

While on Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “One fish for the week and One Pull"

On Birgham Dub 4 were landed for the week, all sea liced and been caught using Micro Tubes and sink tips. 87 Year Old  Mr Barry Whelam, designer of the Hardy Type 2 Reel was amongst the successful rods.

At Upper North Wark fishing was quiet, good effort made by the rods but with no success

Tillmouth had 2 for the week.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 6” and the water temperature is 50.
Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would recommend Pedwell, Ladykirk and Horncliffe beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The next week the water levels are expected to remain pretty steady with the dry weather and cold nights we have had lately. The forecast looks quite settled with no significant rain in the forecast, and we could really do with wee lift would to freshen things up. Conditions are really good for the majority of beats at the moment and with the lower water conditions I would expect fish to start being caught below Coldstream.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10, tubes around the ½” to ¾” size should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Ghillie, Underghillie & Girnal Shrimp should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Black/Gold Rapala  Tobies in 18gm – 28gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 15th April 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 15th April

Last week saw the best week of the season so far, so hopes were high for this week but it wasn’t to be. Catches were surprisingly poor for the time of the year; could it be the April Itch, lack of fresh fish entering the river, general conditions? Time will tell over the next few weeks.

Speaking with Makerstoun's Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle, "3 from lower for the week. One of 12lb which was probably an early March fish with a touch of disease on the nose, That is the problem  most fish have with the annual "Itch" at the moment. One of the Saturday fish was spanking fresh. All fish were caught using intermediate tips and size 8 dressed flies".

On the Junction, the Bailey Party fished the first half of the week landing 4 fish to 22lbs, while the Delvive party had 2 for the second 3 days of the week. On Wednesday Mr Keith Francis landed a lovely fish with Boatman Gavin Brown, while on Friday Mr Mike Graham had success.

Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Robert Jewels reports “3 for the week all sea liced on the fly. Nice to see the Osprey get a nice trout”

Sprouston landed 7 fish for the week. Mr Wilson Philips and Mr Jim Ferrie having success during the first half of the week, Mr Ian Clark and his fishing companion Graham enjoyed some good sport, landing 5 for the back end of the week; both fish on Saturday were fresh and still carrying long tailed sea lice.

While on Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Frustrating week, Saw a few more fish in the beat and  finished with 4 with 3 of these liced, again a couple with wounds probably from a seal. That’s nearly 50% of our fish this season have been bitten. Worrying! "

On Lower Birgham Mr Jeff Slater landed a lovely fresh fish on Monday.

At Upper North Wark fishing was quiet, good effort made by the rods but with no success

Tillmouth had 2 to 17lbs on Wednesday.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 9” and the water temperature is 48.
Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would recommend Tillmouth, Milne Graden and Pedwell beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10, tubes around the ¾” – 1”  size should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Ghillie, Underghillie & Girnal Shrimp should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders or an intermediate, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala,  Tobies in 18gm – 28gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 8th April 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 8th April

With a fairly settled but windy forecast hopes were high of finally getting a full week of fishing in reasonable conditions, something we haven’t had all season so far. With the milder water temperatures and frequent rises in the water the fish have started to make their further up the river system above Kelso. With 102 fish been reported this week, it’s been the best week of the season so far.

Middle Pavilion got off and running with Mr Keith Webster landed 2 on Friday. Whilie Lower Pavillion (2) Bemersyde (5) Upper Dryburgh (3) and Lower Dryburgh (3) all reporting fish this week, with a cracking 25lber been landed at Lower Dryburgh on Wednesday.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Ian Farr reports “ 6 Fish for the week, biggest 15lbs all fresh while we also lost 3”

The Floor’s beats continue to catch on a regular basis with 19 landed for the week.

Speaking with Makerstoun's Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle, “1 off Upper and 4 Of Lower for the week. Mr James Robertson landed a 7lber in the Red Stones Pool on the CeeCee Fly, Mr Steven Roberts landed 2 with the best weighing 9lbs from the Pots in the Elchie Pool on the CeeCee Fly. Ms Gillian Hay landing a 7lb fish on Saturday in the Elchie Pool on a Yellow Monkey.

On the Junction, the Mike Neil Party fished the first half of the week landed 7 fish on the fly, while the Ian Mattioli party had 9 to 14lbs for the end of the week. On Thursday Ms Laura Mattioli christened her new fly rod and landing a sea liced 7lber with Boatman Gavin Brown. The fish over the course of the week were mostly liced and were caught on Black and Yellow Flies.

On Sprouston 10 fish were landed for the week with 6 of these caught on Friday. Mr Andy Britton with 4 and Mr Jim Reid with 2 all of which were sea liced and taken on the fly. While on Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “5 for the week, mostly fresh with a couple liced. A couple with dolphin bite marks, at last getting down to a height to slow them down and get fishing with sink tips and smaller flies"

On Lower Birgham a very special moment happened on Tuesday when 10 Year old Debbie Harris landed her 1st Salmon under the guidance of Boatman Ryan Morrison. Very well done Debbie.

At Upper North Wark fishing was a bit quieter with 1 landed for the week, Mr Andrew Bendall been the successful angler landed a lovely 6lb fish from the Snipe. We’re still seeing the odd fish in the pools.

Water conditions are starting to suit Tillmouth and they got off the mark on Saturday.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 1” and the water temperature is 50.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would recommend Tillmouth, Middle Pavillion and the Dryburgh beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

Looking ahead to next week the water levels are pretty steady with a slow drop, there is a bit of rain forecast this week but we’ll need to wait and see what comes. Conditions are really good for the majority of beats at the moment and with the lower water conditions I would expect fish to start being caught below Coldstream.
