River Tweed River Report Week Ending 2nd November 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 2nd November

A bit more encouragement at the start of the week with a few more reports of fresh fish been caught below Kelso in amongst the older fish that continue to splash about the pools. There was a few big fish reported this week but on the photographic evidence received were quite embarrassing to compare the photos to the reported weighs. They have caused quite a stir on social media. I’ll refrain from adding any more thoughts on the subject. On Saturday the water came away and with another rise today and more rain tomorrow this coming week is looking very dubious to get any sort of fishing done on the lower river, the upper river should have a chance though.
Above Kelso 108 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 55 were reported and below Coldstream 1 was reported.
Fishing on Upper North Wark Mr Derek Carson had a good day on Monday landed a lovely fresh fish of 5lbs and an older 4lb fish. On Tuesday after a good tussle he lost another fish. All 3 were hooked on the Snipe Pool using a Tay Salmon Fly ¼” Tungsten Red Frances. On Wednesday Mr Raymond Doonan on his first visit to the beat landed a fresh 6lb fish from the Snipe on a Cascade. Fishing at the Lees Mr Alistair Dunbar landed two, a 10lb fish from the Temple and a 5lb licer from the Slap both on a Size 8 Ally’s Shrimp. Mr Mark Newstead also had success in the Slap. Mr Lee Ross landed a lovely fresh Sea Trout.

On the River Till, no fish were reported.
199 Salmon and 34 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 34lb Salmon caught on the Fainilee beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A steady week last week. The weather was settled, water was in good nick and the fish were splashing. We had 8 salmon and 1 sea trout last week. Highlight of the week was an 18lb fresh fish covered in sea lice landed in the merk skelly on a red Francis. The week fizzled out with the very dirty rise in water. It was great to see one or two fresh fish amongst the river fish sitting in the pools. We will have to see what condition the river is in tomorrow after the weekend’s rain, but hopefully we can be on the river early in the week and carry on catching fish. Tight lines Tom”

On Upper North Wark, a bit of sport this week with 3 landed and 3 lost. Two of the landed fish were fresh which was good to see. Dirty water today not looking promising of getting much fishing done in the early part of the week.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Nothing to report from Whiteadder this week. Water levels were good but no fish reported caught. Whiteadder rising hard over 2ft on Saturday with rain forecast for Sunday so early next week could be unfishable but keep an eye on the gauge as the river drops quickly.

Hawick Angling Club reports “The fishing on both Acreknowe and Williestruther is open till the 30th November. Fishing on Acreknowe has been reasonably good during the milder days. Small shuttle cock CDC`s have been taking fish when fish have been seen rising. Blood worm fished on an intermediate line has also been successful. Power bait is still taking the odd fish on Williestruther. Barnes has now closed for the season. The Salmon and sea-trout fishing has unfortunately not improved much with few fish being caught. Most of the fish that have been caught have been coloured. Tickets can be purchased from the usual outlets. Tight Lines

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 8” and rising with the water temperature is 41.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside and Dryburgh Upper, Upper Hendersyde, Lower Birgham and Upper North Wark beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Northeast winds will pick up on Monday, leading to a breezy day with partly cloudy skies, some brighter interludes, and a few showers again. The showers will once again be most frequent in the east. Tuesday will be windy with a chillier feel. However, rain will ease, leaving bright spells and scattered showers. Wintry showers are possible on the hills. A generally dry start on Wednesday with a few brighter spells, but rain looks to move in later. Thursday will continue the wet theme, with rain moving in from the west, with perhaps some wintry showers on the hills.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are looking grim for the start of the week if not in the pub sinking lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Junction Shrimp, Temple Shrimp, Willie Gunn Snaelda, Pot Belly Pig and Rogie are all capable to tempting fish on 1” – 2” tubes.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
