River Tweed River Report Week Ending 26th June 2021 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 26th June

After recent years of wet summers and lots of fish this season looks like it’s a proper summer will low water and not many fish about to catch. Catches remain on the low side and still a lack of sea trout as well very hard work at the moment. The rods that are fishing early mornings and evenings are getting a bit more sport. Friday and Saturday were much cloudier and cooler and 44 out of the 66 reported fish caught were on these 2 days.

With us now half way through the season I have the reported catch at 1230 Salmon and 132 Sea Trout there will be some more to add from the non-reporting beats and tributaries. Overall probably a below average return for the period out with the restrictions during February and March the river has been very well let for not a huge return of catches. We will need to wait for the next big rain to see any huge improvement up the river but it would be nice to see a few more getting caught around the bottom beats.

Above Kelso 29 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 23 were reported and below Coldstream 21 were reported. With the best fishing being on the Lower Floors and Tillmouth beat’s where 10 salmon were landed.

66 Salmon and 26 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 18lb Salmon caught on the Tweedhill beat.

If you catch a tagged fish then please take a note of the tag number, this can be made easier by taking a photo of the tag. To report a tagged fish please contact the Tweed Foundation on 01896 848 277 or the Head Fishery Officer on 07884 230 045.

On Upper North Wark, very low at the moment. Any enquiries or booking requests please call Martin on 07825334427.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “Slow start to the week but by Friday with the change of weather and river temps dropping we had a fish or two and more importantly saw some fresh grilse and caught a grilse with long tailed lice, 4 fish on Saturday 3 of which were fresh, all caught on a #10 Red Frances double, the sunray had a few follows and boils but no connections. The river could do with a couple of feet through it but the forecast is for warm sunny days so early and late could be order of the day”

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Mr Lee Ross reports “Good start to week even though the gauge was at 4" Gary short managed a fish on beat 3 on Monday night, through the week was quiet with warm weather and low water, on Friday Gary short got another fish on beat 1 and will Shaw got a cracking sea trout on beat 5, week ended with a a small lift which should make the difference for the oncoming week, with a few sea trout starting to show it could be a good week for us.. Tight lines for the week ahead

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3” and the water temperature is 64.

Looking at the availability for the week ahead, the river is really busy with not much availability for the next few months. If you are looking to fish the river I would suggest booking sooner rather than later to avoid missing out. I would recommend Boleside and Dryburgh Lower Beats to be in with a chance of fish this week.

The forecast this coming week, Tomorrow, it will be dry with plenty of sunny spells, although a few patches of cloud may develop through the afternoon. Winds will continue to be light. High pressure will dominate the weather for next week. A dry and fine day is expected on Tuesday, but with a chance of some thick cloud building in from the north. Wednesday looks to have widespread low cloud in the morning, but this should soon clear away to leave plenty of sunshine. Thursday will be another dry and settled day, with extensive sunshine throughout.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week ahead, floating with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats towards the end of the week. Gledswood Shrimp, Willie Gunn Flamethrower, Ghillie, Sunray Shadow, Silver Stoat’s Tail and Editor are all capable to tempting fish on around ¼”- ½” tubes, dressed flies are now worth a go more often in a size 8-14s. On the spinning front Rapala, Flying C and Toby should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 19th June 2021 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 19th June

Another very hard going week on the river with not much change from recent weeks. River levels are very low and getting lower by the day. Odd shower of rain maybe this week but nothing of note that will make any real difference to the river levels. With the current levels fish would be expected to be getting caught in the lower reaches but this doesn’t seem to be the case lately, Upper Floors landed some sea liced fish at the start of the week so they made short work of the journey upstream in the low water conditions.

Fishing at Boleside on Saturday Mr Craig Drever, Mr Scott Connelly and Mr Lee Conway were amongst the fish landing 4 salmon and some sea trout. Mr Hugh Newton landed 2 at West Learmouth on Friday.

Above Kelso 24 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 26 were reported and below Coldstream 13 were reported. With the best fishing being on the Rutherford, Upper Floors and West Learmouth beat’s where 7 salmon were landed.

63 Salmon and 9 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 16lb Salmon caught on the Rutherford beat.

If you catch a tagged fish then please take a note of the tag number, this can be made easier by taking a photo of the tag. To report a tagged fish please contact the Tweed Foundation on 01896 848 277 or the Head Fishery Officer on 07884 230 045.

On Upper North Wark, Any enquiries or booking requests please call Martin on 07825334427.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Mr Lee Ross reports “No fish to report this week. Been very quiet on the whiteadder, with warm dry weather and low water conditions it's been difficult. Running at a steady 4" all week it's needing a good bit of rain and at least a foot to get things moving. With a dry forecast this coming week if you're keen to have a cast i can recommend small doubles size 14 or 16 on light tackle, whiteadder offers good trout fishing too so if you're not having success why not give the trout a try as well, no shortage of them. Tight lines to everyone fishing this week”

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 5th June 2021 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 5th June

Well how to put last week’s fishing into words that is a challenge! The week was mostly ruined by coloured water which is apparently being caused by Algae Bloom which drastically reduced the visibility in the deeper sections of beats with visibility around 3-4ft, it did look better in the thinner streamy pools. Add that to the glorious blue skies beating down on the river conditions could not have been much harder. Thursday was a bit duller and seemed to help the catches with 18 caught, outwith that it was hard work requiring early starts and late into the evenings to try and find the better conditions to fish. Water levels really dropped in last week and summer level is just about upon us, with no real rain on the forecast the levels will continue to drop especially now the farmers have the irrigators turned on and watering the tatties has begun. There does seem to be a bit more cloud cover this week, if that filthy colour finally takes a shift it should help with catching some fish. Hopefully a bit more inspiration to write about next week!!

Mr Arron Bortoft was rewarded for fishing after the sun came of the water and landed a nice fish at Dryburgh Upper. Mr Gary Price landed an 11lber from the Willow Hole on the Junction. Mr Robin Scott fishing the Cuddy Pool at LNW landed a superb fresh 15lber on a Red Editor. Fishing at Pedwell, 12 year old William Needlers landed his first salmon weighing 7lbs. Mr Nick Hamiliton had success on the BDAA water on the River Whiteadder.

Above Kelso 27 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 20 were reported and below Coldstream 10 were reported. With the best fishing being on the Junction beat where 8 salmon were landed.

58 Salmon and 4 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 15lb Salmon caught on the Lower Pavillion beat.

If you catch a tagged fish then please take a note of the tag number, this can be made easier by taking a photo of the tag. To report a tagged fish please contact the Tweed Foundation on 01896 848 277 or the Head Fishery Officer on 07884 230 045.

Sunny spells are more likely to develop during the afternoon. Wednesday will continue breezy with some spells of rain, heavy at times in the morning but these gradually tapering off through the afternoon.
