River Tweed River Report Week Ending 30th March 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 30th March

A must more settled week weather wise apart from what seems like a never ending wind making casting challenging in some areas and the water level dropped slowly about an inch a day as the week progressed. This week is looking a bit more unsettled so a small rise or some snow on the hills could be a possibility.
Catches remain quite sporadic with some days showing an improvement in the catches then the next day hardly a fin to be seen, would appear small pods of fresh fish creeping through of the tides.

Fish are continuing to push up into the middle river with 21 fish been reported above Kelso with the Floors beats having the best of the fishing with 9. Mr Simon Furniss of Burnbane and Delvine fishing on the Tay landed 2 lovely fish from Lower Floors on Saturday. Fishing at Rutherford Mr Stuart Norris got his 1st for the season with a lovely 10lber taken on the Myofb tube fly from the Lovers Leap, he also had a brief encounter with a 2nd fish that fell off. Bemersyde got off and running for the season when Mr Roger Herbert landed a 7lb fish from the Stream on a Black and Yellow tube fly.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 25 fish were reported with Sprouston 8 and Junction 6 having the better of the fishing. The Cotton Party fishing at Sprouston had a few fish at the start of the week inc 4 on Tuesday. South Wark had a better week with 5 landed and a Sea Trout. Mr Douglas Aitken of V Fly Fishing had a good day on Monday landed 3 lovely springers on the fly. Mr Ronald Gardener had 1 on Thursday and Mt Ian Blyth landed a superb 18lb fish from the Willows on a Willie Gunn Snaelda tube fly on Friday. Upper North Wark had a good afternoon on Wednesday landing 3 fish, Mr Justin Rose landed 2 at 10lbs and 6lbs in the Dub, while up the Snipe Pool Mr Ian Hayward landed a 10lb fish om his Hayward Gunn tube fly.

With the water levels starting to drop there were a few fish reported below Coldstream with Milne Graden getting 2 on Saturday with Mr Bob Miller and Boatman Kevin Wright landing 1 each. Ladykirk landed 2 and Horncliffe got there first of the season landed by a syndicate member.

On the River Till, Redscar and Upper Tindal reported 2 sea trout.

66 Salmon and 10 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 15lb Salmon caught on the Sprouston beat.

Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Steven Charlton reports “seen a couple fish the end of the week, water is looking great, we have availability for this week with fish being caught around us now it’s looking promising”

On Upper North Wark, conditions were starting to get a bit low for us and some working the fly was required. We had a hot hour on Thursday afternoon landing 3 springers, Mr Justin Rose landed 2 and Mr Ian Hayward landed 1. Some residents splashing about the pools but a wee bit of rain would be gratefully received.

Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “we are now off the mark at Horncliffe with a fresh 5lb Springer and list 3 others this week. Also spaces still available in the Horncliffe syndicate, the track has been upgraded during the either with cattle grids added, so no more opening and closing of the gates”

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder steadily dropped from 1ft 5inches at the start of the week to steady out at 9 inches for the week end. Although the river is in good form and fresh fish are entering the system there have been no fish recorded for the week.”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 0” and the water temperature is 46.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Dryburgh Upper, Milne Graden and ladykirk beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Tomorrow will be largely cloudy, breezy and chilly with the chance of some rain or drizzle, especially during the afternoon. There will be sunny spells on Tuesday but with scattered showers too. The showers may be heavy, and they may be wintry on high ground. Scattered showers are also expected on Wednesday, these again potentially heavy and thundery. Further showers are likely on Thursday. It will be a cool few days with some chilly nights expected.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, water levels are dropping in now and conditions are looking a bit unsettled this week. Floating or Intermediate lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Black and Yellow, Gledswood Shrimp, Monkey, Spring Ghillie all capable to tempting that springer on inch to inch and a half tubes. On the spinning front the Blue Rapala, 18-28gm tobies should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 23rd March 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 23rd March

Well not a huge amount to say about the first half of March it have been two weeks of high dirty water with occasional opportunities to have a wee go and the odd fish was caught. This week Monday was quite dirty below the Teviot and resulted in not much fishing effort, the rest of the week the river settled and fishing conditions got better.
Off the reported fish 24 were caught above Kelso with the Mertoun beats with 8 and Floors beats also having 8 for the week, Rutherford and the Makerstoun beats also caught. Catches below Kelso improved once the water started to fine down and 30 fish were reported in this area for the week. Junction 5, Upper Hendersyde 4, Lower Birgham 4, Lower North Wark 4, Upper North Wark 3and the Lees with 3 had the better of the fishing.

Mr Iain Wilson of the Borders Gunroom in St Boswells landed his 1st of the season from the Lower Makerstoun beat on a Posh Tosh bottle tube.
Renowned artist Mr Alistair Makinson landed a nice fish from the Upper Floors beat using a Blacko’s Dee Special tube fly available from www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
Fishing on the Junction Mr David Sands landed a fine springer with boatman Gavin Brown.
Mr Jason Hillyard landed the 1st fish from the Edenfoot beat this season with a lovely sea liced springer.
Mr Richard Summers fishing with boatman Lee Ross landed 2 springers from the Temple Pool on a Black and Yellow tube fly.
Fishing at the Lees Duane Hubbard landed his 1st ever salmon from the Cauldstream and a further 2 fish were caught from the same pool by Paul Taroni and Charles Cook.
Father and Son team Alan and Alex Triffitt have a good day on Upper North Wark on Saturday with Alex landed his 1st fly caught salmon ably assisted by boatman Richard Farr and shortly after father Alan fishing with boatman Martin Ritchie landed a lovely 10lber from the Snipe.
On the Whiteadder the BDAA had their 1st fish of the season reported, a lovely 6lb long tailed sea liced fish landed by Mr Colin Tait on the deadly Ghillie Fly from Tay Salmon Fly.
59 Salmon and 8 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 15lb Salmon caught on the Junction beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A great week! We were glad to finally get some decent water and a steadily dropping river. This gave us sport every day this last week and we landed 4 salmon and 1 sea trout. All the fish were really fresh and some even had sea lice on them. Other fresh fish were also lost. But the quality of fish this year has been superb, fin perfect silver bullets! It’s great to see. Hopefully the catching form will continue next week with another steady water. Fingers crossed!

On Upper North Wark, glad to finally get back fishing properly with nearly 2 full weeks washed out with high dirty water. Had 3 springers for the week and lost a couple. Mr Richard Farr landed a 8lber from the Snipe on a Garry Dog and on Saturday we had a good morning with Mr Alex Triffitt landed his 1st springer on the Fly from the Back Of The Isle not to be out done father Alan landed a lovely springer from the Snipe on the Rapala shortly after. Well done guys really happy for you both after facing some terrible conditions in recent trips. We only have 2 single rods available until 22nd April give me a call on 07825 334427 for any enquiries.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “Duane Hubbard ticked one of his boxes today getting his first ever salmon from the Lees cauldstream this afternoon a liced 10lber. His pal Paul Taroni had one on Wednesday from same place. Charles Cook had a 9lber also from the Cauld on a franc n snaelda.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder has been up and down since early March levelling off this week about 1ft  5 inches which is a perfect height for the fish to run. With more fish entering the river there have been reports of two fish from a private beat earlier in the month and one sea liced fresh fish from the Berwick & Distrct AA beats today at about 6lb safely returned. Prospects for the week ahead look very good”

If you would like more information in the meantime please just drop me an email

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 8” and the water temperature is 44.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Dryburgh Upper, Rutherford and Upper North Wark beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, a bright but chilly start with sunny spells. Through the afternoon, it will be cloudier but still with some sunny intervals at times. Remaining largely dry throughout the day. High pressure is expected to dominate the weather for much of next week. A cold start to Tuesday, and remaining dry with sunny spells and patchy cloud during the day. A clearer night with occasional mist patches will follow. Wednesday and Thursday will both remain dry and calm, with sunny periods and patchy cloud by day, followed by clearer, chilly nights. Fairly warm by day.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are looking a lot more settled with high pressure with us most of the week. Intermediate lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Black and Yellow, Gledswood Shrimp, Monkey, Spring Ghillie all capable to tempting that springer on inch to inch and a half tubes. On the spinning front the Blue Rapala, 18-28gm tobies should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
