River Tweed River Report Week Ending 26th October 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 26th October

Well for what looking like it should have been a decent week with the rise from Sunday giving a reasonable height and falling on Monday morning catches would have been expected to have been better than what was caught. The lack of fresh fish coming in isn’t helping and a seal cruising around the Milne Graden area definitely won’t be helping the beats further down the river. Overall seems that the fish in the pools are proving hard to tempt and not a huge amount else I can add to that. I did get a report of some kelts caught at Gledswood on Saturday and fish been moved of the gravel on the Teviot when wading about. With frost and colder weather forecast this week it may still up some of the residents.

Above Kelso 101 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 56 were reported and below Coldstream 3 were reported.

Fishing at Peebles Crown Water Mr Connor Alexander Newcombe land a good size fish. On Dryburgh Upper Mr Robert Ives has success in the Boat Pool on a Red Frances, Mr Dougie Grove and Mr Mike Redmond both having success in the Mungie Pool. Mr Paul Pritchard landed a fish at Bemersyde. Mr Douglas Galbraith landed 2 to 16lbs at Holylee. On Upper North Wark Mr Gary Derrick landed a 12lb fish from the Snipe Pool on a Willie Gunn Snaelda. Mr Hugh Newton had a good week fishing on West Learmouth landed 7 fish including 2 at 16lbs one of which was very fresh over his 3 days on the beat. The infamous Spittin’ Vomit fly doing some damage! On the BDAA Whiteadder water Mr Colin Tait landed a 14lb hen fish.

On the River Till, no fish were reported.
196 Salmon and 40 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 21lb Salmon caught on the Traquiar beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A slow week last week. The week started with a good water height and steadily dropped all week. It’s exactly what you want it to do, slowly drop and clear. A couple of frosty mornings and good weather conditions. But the fish didn’t want to play. We landed 2 for the week and a first ever fish for graham at 13lb , lost a couple and saw a lot of fish that didn’t like the flavour of flies we were putting through them... the positive was that we saw plenty of fish in the pools splashing and even saw some fresh fish running in the middle of the week. Another pretty steady week of conditions ahead, so some new flies, new rods and better luck hopefully!

On Upper North Wark, Mr Gary Derrick had all the action at the start of the week landed 1 and unfortunately another 2 got away. Plenty splashing about but hard to tempt.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Last weekend’s rain brought the Whiteadder up over a ft where it stayed all week. Six fish for the week to 14lbs which brings the total to 71 salmon and 13 sea trout for the season so far. Prospects for Monday look good but river will be falling and no rain forecast”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 2” and the water temperature is 45.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside and Dryburgh Upper and Upper Hendersyde beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Monday will be largely dry with plenty of sunshine, although it will be chilly. The slight chance of the odd shower. After a chilly start, Tuesday is expected to be another dry and settled day with sunny spells. Another cold night is anticipated into Wednesday. At present, current indications suggest that the bulk of Wednesday daytime will be dry but increasingly cloudy, as rain gradually encroaches from the west. But Thursday, milder and wetter is expected.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, floating or intermediate lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Junction Shrimp, Temple Shrimp, Willie Gunn Snaelda, Pot Belly Pig and Rogie are all capable to tempting fish on 1/2” – 1” tubes or dressed flies in size 6.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 19th October 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 19th October

The week started with a reasonable height of water (2ft 5 at Sprouston) and still carrying a bit of colour from the weekends rise. With reasonable weather most of the week conditions got better as the week went on, we even had summer arrive back on Thursday before the rain took over for Friday and Saturday pushing the river over 3ft 6 at Sprouston and very heavy muck colour, might be a dubious colour for the start of the week.
Above Kelso 158 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 92 were reported and below Coldstream 7 were reported.
Fishing at Glenormiston Mr Adam Spencer landed an 8lb fish. Mr Rainer Schilcher fishing at Dryburgh Upper landed his first and second Scottish salmon. On Lower Pavilion Mr John Mothersdale landed a good fish from the Generals. Fishing at Upper North Wark Mr Dave Moody landed a 15lb fish from the Back Of The Isle, Mr Richard Waite landed a 12lber from the Snipe on a Willie Gunn Snaelda, Ms Diane Orston landed a 10lber from the Snipe on a Calvin Shrimp and Mr Alex Knox of the fabulous Contented Vine Restaurant in Kelso finished off our week landing a 5lber from the Snipe on a Rogie in truly awful conditions.

On the River Till, no fish were reported. Middle Ettrick Reported 13
304 Salmon and 43 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 20lb Salmon caught on the Hendersyde beat.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “There’s been one or two nice big autumn fish caught by the younger generation recently, Sam Ackroyd (18) with a 17lb fish. Alex Barclay also with a 17lb fish out of the Cromweil on a Willie Gunn Tube, Alex’s first ever Salmon on the Fly. We are on 77 Salmon for the season which beats last year’s total of 63. Sea Trout numbers have risen this year and we have 21 for the season”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “If Carlsberg did perfect water conditions in a week, this last week would have been it. A Monday morning with 2ft2 on the gauge and dropping water. The water dropped and cleared as the week went on, and the hooked fish stayed on better. Our best day was 3 on Friday. Including one very fresh 8lb fish and a small fresh grilse. There were loads of fish hooked and lost in the early part of the week, but good to have some action and feel a pull on the line. Fish were seen running during the week and although fresh fish were caught, none had sea lice on. It was a shame the water changed for Saturday a came up and dirty as things were looking really good. But hopefully it will set us up next week with a similar water to last week and we can get back amongst the fish! Fingers crossed and tight lines. Tom

On Upper North Wark, a decent week on the beat for fish been hooked every day but sadly more than our fair share got away. 4 landed for the week.

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder hovered at just over a ft all week and nothing banked. Saturday’s rain put the river well in flood but falling fast overnight. More rain forecast Sunday but river drops very quickly and could be good later in the week for washed off Tweed rods.”

Hawick Angling Club reports “The fishing on both Acreknowe and Williestruther is open till the 30th November. There has been very little fishing activity on Acreknowe, but the few rods that have been out have caught some fish. Slow and deep is the best chance of a fish. On some of the milder days fish have been seen rising. Power bait is still taking the odd fish on Williestruther. Barnes has now closed for the season. Despite the rises of water over the past weeks very few Salmon and Sea-trout have been seen, and even fewer caught. Most of the fish that have been caught have been coloured. Tickets can be purchased from the usual outlets. Tight Lines”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3ft 6” and the water temperature is 47.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside and Dryburgh Upper beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Monday will be a fine and dry day with a good deal of sunshine once any fog lifts. Cloud looks set to thicken in places during the afternoon. Tuesday will be a cloudy and rather breezy day but it will be mostly dry with just the odd shower here and there. Turning wet later, however, with rain arriving from the west in the evening and overnight. Some heavy rain is expected into Wednesday afternoon, but rain will eventually clear to the east. Scattered blustery showers will then persist into Thursday.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 12th October 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 12th October

The week started with big dirty water coming past and the river was pretty much unfishable on Monday then settled in through to Thursday before rising again on Friday. The theme of the week of a lovely howling south westerly pushing gusts of 45-50mph at times hard work for those on the Oars. The water level remained on the big side all week making for difficult fishing conditions below Coldstream and challenging below the Teviot with the colour coming down from the rises. Good effort to those who kept a line in the water in these challenging conditions.
Above Kelso 64 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 29 were reported and below Coldstream 5 were reported.

Fishing on the Peebles water Mr Connor Alexander Newcombe had some success landing some Salmon and Sea Troot. On Cardrona Mr Steven Dora landed 2 fish 6lbs and 7lbs the successful flies were Snaelda and Cascade. On the Yarrow Water Mr Alex Frere-Scott landed one hen fish. On Holylee Mr Douglas Galbraith had success. On Dryburgh Upper Mr Nigel Houldsworth had success in the Todholes Pool while David Clark and Keith Clark also had success. On Upper North Wark Mr Robert Maundrell had an 8lb fish from the Snipe Pool on a Cascade conehead and Mr Alex Triffitt had a fine 13lb fish from the Back Of The Isle on a Tay Salmon Fly Yellow and Red Pot Belly Pig copper tube. Mr Richie Gallacher fishing the Temple Pool on the Lees landed a superb fresh 21lber.

On the River Till, no fish were reported.

134 Salmon and 22 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 22lb Salmon caught on the Rutherford beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A tough week. Very unsettled water and very unhelpful strong wind most of the week. We did land a couple of salmon and a sea trout. But we did lose some others. But you can’t win them all. The fish on Friday was very fresh and was good to hear that some downstream of us were also fresh. Hope the rain this weekend doesn’t ruin this week before it’s started! We will have to see if some of those fish have moved into our holding pools... fingers crossed! Tight lines Tom

On Upper North Wark, a tough week casting and rowing with that wind howling. We managed a couple of fish with Mr Robert Maundrell with a fish from the Snipe and Mr Alex Triffitt with one from the Back of the Isle. Both guys had other fish on that didn’t stick unfortunately

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “The 4ft dirty spate on Sunday night dropped away and fined down very quickly to 2ft 8 inches on Monday. Nice to welcome rods from lower Tweed who were washed off and a French Guest managed four fish for Monday and a further fish on Tuesday before heading home.  Sunday's rain was a blessing for Whiteadder with a total of 7 fish, heaviest of which was 6lb for the week”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft and the water temperature is 50.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside, Dryburgh Upper and Junction beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, a dry start with sunny spells, but cloud will start to build through the day. The chance that rain may start to move in at the end of the day. Monday night looks set to see patchy rain overnight and into early Tuesday. Patches of rain should die away to leave it dry with sunny spells. However, a band of rain will move in overnight. A wet start on Wednesday, but rain will clear to allow plenty of sunny spells through the afternoon. Thursday will have sunny spells with a few scattered showers.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk
