River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 23rd May
For the English side of
the river this was their first full week back fishing with most beats starting
to let rods again from the Monday. Water levels remained on the low side all week
with a small rising coming through at the end of the week that seemed to move a
few fish up the river for the Saturday rods. By the sound of today’s Scottish
Government update it would appear that the Scottish side of the river will be
able to start fishing from Friday 29th May. Some booking
restrictions will probably apply in the first few weeks.
Fishing at Tillmouth at
the start of the week the Cotton Party had a good 3 days landing 31 Salmon
and 5 Sea Trout between them with all the party getting amongst the action. The
beat had a good week landed 48 fish, giving them 70 salmon landed since the
beat reopened. West Learmouth continue to pick away with 15 for the week
including a good day of 8 on Saturday for Mr Adam Vicary and Mr Robert Ellis.
Horncliffe landed 15 for the week amongst the successful rods was Mr Mac
Patterson on Monday. Fishing at Lower Birgham on Tuesday Mr Mark Rodgers at a
7lb fish from the Nether Stream on a Willie Gunn.
Waltham and Dritness
Beat had another good week of low water heights,
which suits the beat and plenty of fish in the river, most rods who fished
managed to hook or catch a fish. 20 salmon were landed, lucky rods were, Ron
Martin 5 (five fish) Frank Bell 3, Jack Weightman 3, Mike Dodd 2, Jim McAdam 2, Martin Inkster 2, Mike Wood 2 and Dave
Lorimer 1.
That brings the season total so far to 39 salmon in a week
and a half, which is our best start to a season on our records, hopefully a
good sign for the higher beats once the fishing starts properly and the water
lifts.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 23 were reported and
below Coldstream 93 were reported.
On the River Till, 2 Sea Trout was reported.
116 Salmon and 12 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 15lb Salmon
caught on the West Learmouth & Horncliffe beats.
Lower
Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well our first week back, it felt
strange with the measures for Corvid 19, though if that’s what we have to do
then that’s better to be on the river then not. But all our rods adhered to and
respected our rules and like us were glad to be able to get out on the water.
We were unlucky last week hooking quite a lot of fish but not landing them. We
did manage to land three fish, all fresh as paint and one even with sea lice
on. The water has been very low for the last five weeks so it was nice to see a
little rise of water coming over the weekend. Here is hoping that some of the
fish that were in the bottom of the river will be encouraged to move up.
Due to
the restrictions on travel and accommodation a lot of our recent let’s have had
to be put back up available to more ‘Local’ anglers (from England so far) and
every week while we learn what is opening up and what restrictions are lifted
we are re listing fishing. We currently have some available fishing in June
listed and is an opportunity to fish at the end of the spring run and typically
a great time for sea trout in the warmer evenings.
It was
great to see the water on the gauge on Sunday and makes us fill with optimism
of a good week ahead. We will await clarification on Thursday or before as to
if the Scottish bank and travel in Scotland opens up to allow people above the
border to get back out fishing. We will see.... fingers crossed. Tight lines

On Upper North Wark, The beat remains closed.
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 5” and falling with the water temperature is
56.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Lower Birgham beat should
have a chance of some action this week.
The
forecast this coming week, Tomorrow will be dry with partly
cloudy skies. Any cloud will break up to give a lot of sunshine for the rest of
the day. It will be a bit cooler day with light winds. On Wednesday, it
will start off with bright intervals, but large areas of cloud will push in
from the west. The odd shower may be possible at times. Thursday will be a dry
day with patches of cloud around. Another fine and dry day on Friday, with
longer spells of sunshine throughout. It will become warmer as the week
progresses.

Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are nearly at summer
level so a floating line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most
beats with Aurora Cascade, Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp and Ghillie Flies are all
capable to tempting fish on size 8-12 dressed hooks. On the spinning front, the
flying c and toby should be worth a go.
