River Tweed River Report Week Ending 24^th April

 

What a week for weather it was more like the Costa Del Tweed than normal April weather on Tweedside I’m sure many will have enjoyed the weather just not so much the fishers. We had a frosty start most mornings but by lunchtime we were getting backed with bright blue skies and temperatures reaching 18-20 degrees some days, wind from the east kept a cooler feel and lights and some rather red looking faces were glowing by the end of the week. Looking at the forecast this week is looking a bit more overcast with is going to coincide with some bigger tides maybe just maybe we might see some more fish enter the river this week.

 

Fishing in the evening at Bemersyde Mr Dave Dray landed fish of 7lbs and 6lbs from the Woodside on a Size 10 Usk Grub. Interestingly one of the fish had previously being caught and tagged in the same pool on the 1^st April. Fishing at the Junction there was success for Billy and Shirley Jack. The Slap Pool on the Lees produced fish for Mr Micheal Black, Mr Jonathan Reddin and Mr Jim Fleming. Mr Connor Alexander Newcombe landed a nice fish at Tweedhill on a Sunray. On Waltham and Dritness Mr Ron Martin and Mr Jack Weightman both landed fish of 8lbs.

 

Above Kelso 6 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 29 were reported and below Coldstream 15 was reported. With the best fishing being on the Junction beat where 7 springers were landed.

50 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 14lb Salmon caught on the Junction and Hendersyde beats.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Well not a week full of stories of big fish, nor small fish or in actual fact any fish caught... apart from a brief contact on Tuesday afternoon. But it felt more like a summer holiday with the nice weather, sun shining, bbq burning etc etc than a hard core fishing holiday. But so much more of the fishing is sometimes appreciated in there quieter weeks. We all want fish, of course we do. But when the weather was so good where better to be than on the river bank.

Whilst at times last week we wondered if there were any fish in our beat or they had abandoned ship and moved on in the deeper or faster beats. Quite an interesting few hours was spend drifting with Polaroid’s over the deeper pools and plenty fish were seen and very clearly, in fact 2 could be spotted with tags in them already from a previous capture.

Fingers crossed my weather app is correct, as some rain showers and cooler temperatures are what it shows... let’s hope it’s right! Tight lines. Tom”

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A slow week on the Lees, 5 landed all brand new, 1 lost and a couple of other pulls. The sunray/collie dug brought a few fish to have a look at it but none would grab hold. Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Mr Lee Ross reports “Not much to report this week, with low water and bright sunshine it made fishing difficult, some rain forecast for the week so fingers crossed we get a rise and entice some fish into the system.”

 

 

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 4” and the water temperature is 46.

 

 

At this stage in the report I would normally have my suggested beats to book for the week ahead, however with all the Covid Restrictions in place and each beat using their own guidelines I will refrain from suggestions until the river is opened back up for fishing a bit more normally.

 

 

The forecast this coming week, starting dry with patchy clouds tomorrow morning. Turning cloudier in the afternoon with patchy rain moving in from the north. A moderate wind for some. Low pressure returns to bring some unsettled weather over the next few days. Tuesday will see areas of cloud and rain through the day, clearing southwards in the evening. Wednesday will be largely cloudy with a few showers, but sunny spells will develop during breaks in the cloud. A similar day is expected on Thursday, with showers perhaps turning wintry over the hills.

Look at what to bring for the week ahead, Floating with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats. Gledswood Shrimp, Tritton Shrimp, Willie Gunn, Sunray Shadow and Aurora Cascade are all capable to tempting fish on around ½”- ¾” tubes, dressed flies are now worth a go more often in a size 8-12s. On the spinning front Rapala, Flying C and Toby should bring results.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 17^th April

 

Another week passes and a slight improvement in the catches but nothing to shout home about. With the water levels dropping in towards summer level the bottom end of the river started to catch fish with 10 landed below Coldstream, which is a bit more encouraging that there are still fish entering the river with a good few of the fish reported last week carrying sea lice. With no real rain forecast on the forecast and more sunshine it just seems like taking it week by week and hoping to see some sort of improvement in the catches. With the easing of the travel restrictions this week anglers from Scotland can fish and from the 26^th it sounds like we can welcome fishers from south of the border.

 

Mr Alan Morrison had success at Upper Floors, On the Junction Mr Iain Wilson got the week off and running with a nice fish taken on a 9mm Puppy Dog, fished of a Hover/Intermediate line with a 3.9ips tip, on Saturday Mr Crispin Rodwell had a nice fish from the Hawthorn Pool on a Posh Tosh dressed double. At the Lees there was success in the Learmouth Stream on a Gold Conehead Cascade, Mr Ross Jones landed a nice fresh fish on a Green Butt Stoat’s Tail while Mr Alex Scott landed a fish in the Slap on a Cascade Conehead. Fishing at Tweedhill Mr Dave Moody landed a lovely fresh 12lber on the fly. Fishing on the BDAA stretch of the Whiteadder Mr Ian Hunter landed the biggest reported fish of the week a 15lber.

 

Above Kelso 7 fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 24 were reported and below Coldstream 10 was reported. With the best fishing being on the Hendersyde beat where 7 springers were landed.

42 Salmon and 2 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 15lb Salmon caught on the BDAA Whiteadder beat.

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “There have been some tough weeks on the river so far for April. April has always been the so called big catching month for springers where we are in the river. With many April’s being into the teens for the month, and some years up to 36 fish for the month. But so far it has been tough going. Is it because of the cold river temps for the time of year, is it the low water? Is it the wall to wall sunshine? Or is it the ‘itch’ that has put the fish off? Who knows for sure? But all these things together have made the fish numbers be lower than we would like. On a more positive note we did start to see some fish moving towards the end of the week. Some showing in the streams but most were seen in the deeper holes drifting over them in the boat. So they are there. We just have to find out how to get them. The Weather reports some cooler days next week and even the possibility of a shower or two. This could just be the catalyst that the fish need to become more active and hopefully take our offerings. As the weeks go on, the lockdowns ease and we are able to welcome more of our rods to the river. Some who haven’t been able to fish for 2 years with us. It will be good to see them back and enjoying out outside sport. Hopefully a more productive week ahead, but every week we can spend on the river is always an enjoyable one. Tight lines. Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “3 salmon and a seatrout for the week plus a couple of other pulls isn't too bad for the conditions we were faced with. Cloudless skies flat calm and almost summer level. Some days we saw a fish or two moving through and it was a case of right time right place if you caught one. Best fish was a 20lber on Monday from Learmouth stream. No real rain forecast so it’s going to be another difficult week. With it dropped down and to 4 inches now we're in desperate need of rain. With a dry forecast next week we're going to have to do rain dance at this rate. Still one or two fish creeping in the river at the moment. Light tackle like intermediate tips size 12/14 dressed flies should hopefully tempt them. Gledswood or ally shrimp would be best. Tight lines for the week everyone”

The forecast this coming week, Tomorrow will start brightly in a few areas but it will turn cloudier through the day. It should stay mostly dry too, although with the chance of a few showers drifting in from the west. On Tuesday, a band of rain is expected to drift in from the west. It is expected to turn drier in the evening with clear spells developing overnight. Wednesday will be dry and sunny with just a few patches of cloud around. High pressure will continue to dominate for Thursday with plenty of sunshine and light winds expected. Temperatures will be around or just below average.
