Where To Buy Salmon Flies For Scotland - Tay Salmon Fly

Is Your Fly Box Ready For The New Season?

With the fishing season under way and the vast majority of the other rivers opening tomorrow (1st Feb) we have all been getting the rods and tackle bags ready for the new season. As you flick through the flies boxes checking the armoury for the season ahead and the memories of fish caught on the patterns in front of you, its always an exciting time, the anticipation of the fly swiging across the current and a big springer grabbing hold.

We had a special moment last year when we were informed that Mr Ian Mitchell won the Malloch Trophy for the Biggest Fly Caught Salmon from Scotland with a splendid 32lb fish from the River Conon using our Ghillie Piggy Salmon Fly. Its lovely to have played a small part in Ian's success.

Over the winter I was busy putting together some boxed selections after a good few requests and to make it easier to pick a selection of flies to suit a time or year or when you just can't make your mind up as there are to many good flies to choose from. The Ultimate Spring Salmon Fly Selection has proven very popular since i added it to the website with an assorted selection of sizes and weights to cover many situations over the spring months, with the added bonus it come in one of our amazing divider system boxes with can hold many flies and still fits in you pocket. One of the most useful boxes I have seen for tube flies. Also proven popular with our overseas trips for the Steelhead and Pacific Salmon is our Intruder Selection or off to Scandinavia with our Templedog Selection.

Outwith our selections we have many patterns available on dressed hook and tubes  for you to browse through every pattern we sell we would use ourselves on the river.

We have supported the River Dee Trust, Lancashire Cricket Foundation, River Clyde Opening Charity Raffle so far with donations to help them raise funds for their good causes and we will continue to show them our support.

I look forward to providing you with the flies to catch you fish this coming season and beyond. Tight lines and stay safe.

Thanks

Martin

Cascade Copper Tube Salmon Fly Step By Step Fly Tying Instruction By Tay Salmon Fly

Cascade Copper Tube Salmon Fly Step By Step Fly Tying Instruction
Requested By Mark Steele
Materials Required

Copper Tube
Black Thread
Silver Oval Tinsel
Orange Bucktail
Yellow Bucktail
Pearl Krystal Flash
Silver Holographic Tinsel
Black Floss
Dyed Black Silver Fox Tail
Yellow Cock Feather
Orange Hen Feather

Place the tube of your choice in the vice, I am using a 3/4" copper tube.
Start your thread working your way to the rear catching in the silver oval tinsel as you go.
Create the tag using the silver oval tinsel, do not cut it off!
Mix the yellow and orange bucktail together and tie in as a tail roughly one and a half times the length of the tube.
Tie in 3 strands of pearl krystal flash.
Create the rear half of the body with silver holographic tinsel.
Catch in the black floss and wynd forward creating the front half of the body.
Bring the silver oval tinsel forward at even gaps to make the rib.
Take a pinch of dyed black silver fox hair rolling it in your fingers to create shape, removing any guard hairs and fluff that remains.
Tie in 3 strands of pearl krystal flash.
Tie in the yellow hackle feather.
Tie in the orange hackle feather then tidy up the head, whip finish and varnish the head to complete.
The completed fly.

The Cascade is a very versatile pattern and the colour variations are plentiful, just swap the silver holographic tinsel for any colour you like and/or try different colours of flash. Tie away and create your own killer colour combination.

Polar Extreme Pot Bellied Pig Step By Step Fly Tying Instruction By Tay Salmon Fly

Polar Extreme Pot Bellied Pig Step By Step Fly Tying Instruction

Materials

Gold Double Hook
Fire Red Thread
Black Boar Bristles
Black Polar Fox
Gold Krystal Flash
Black Cock Hackle
Yellow Cock Hackle
Fluro Orange Cock Hackle
Yellow Glister Dubbing
Silver Oval Tinsel
Jungle Cock

Begin by bedding the hook with tying thread.
Then Dub in a small tag of yellow glister dubbing
Tie in 5 or 6 black boar bristles extending about 1 1/2 inches approx.
Then tie in a small bunch of black bucktail the same length as the Bristles.
Then add a small bunch of Black polar fox over the bucktail about half the length of the bristles.
Select a long supple black cock hackle for the tail.
Tie in the hackle tip first then double it.
Make five turns of hackle then tie off securely and trim the waste
Tie in 2 strands of gold crystal hair on each side of the tail again at roughly the same length as the bristles.
At this stage tidy up the waste tie it down securely towards the head. When at the head tie in the rib and secure it on the side of the hook down to the tail.
Now dub on some yellow glister dubbing and create your body fairly loosely at this stage. (ideally a cigar shaped body is the goal tapering down towards the head)
Select a stiff yellow cock saddle hackle and tie in.
Make 2 turns where you tie it in then palmer it quite densely down the body and secure by ribbing(tightly towards the head). The rib should pull in the dubbing over the tying thread base to give the desired cigar shaped body.
Now select a Fluro fire Orange cock saddle feather and tie in (Please note my camera didn't like this colour in the wee hackles so I've used a larger than normal one so it would show up better)Double the hackle ready for tying
Make 2 turns of the doubled head hackle leaving enough space for JC and a neat head.(hackle would normally be much shorter than this.)
Now select 2 matching jungle cock eyes and tie in on top of the head in a gentle V shape.
Here's a top profile showing the V shaped JC cheeks (Normally the head hackle extends to the point where the body stops and the tail starts and this is the length I like my JC to be I find it gives the fly a better profile in the water.)
Here's the finished product PHEW!!!!
And In true Blue Peter Style here's a few I did earlier (with the correct length of head hackle giving better proportion to the fly.

Willie Gunn Franc N Snaelda Step By Step Fly Tying Instruction By Tay Salmon Fly

I often get requested to show how to make certain patterns and I always try when time allows to help fellow tyers when I can. So here is my step by stem on how to make a Willie Gunn Franc N Snaelda.

Materials List

14mm Signature Tube
Black Bucktail
Orange Bucktail
Yellow Bucktail
Gold Mirco Krystal Flash
Yellow Feelers
Orange Feelers
Gold Oval Tinsel
Black Wool
Yellow Cock Hackle Feather
Orange Hen Hackle Feather
Black Hen Hackle Feather
Black Thread
1.8mm Inner Tubing
Red Cone Large

14mm Signature Tube with Silicone Hook Holder Tubing attached. Since I am using the pin to tie on the silicone tubing does help stop the worst of the tube spinning.
Catch in your thread to the rear of the tube.
Mix the Black, Orange and Yellow bucktail in even thirds to create the Willie Gunn mix for the tail. Tie in the bucktail making sure you wrap it all the way around the tube creating a skirt.
Trim the waste bucktail to the front off and then tie in 3 stands of Gold Micro Krystal Flash on the top and bottom.
Tie in four Feelers in even intervals on top of the skirt, making sure they curl out and away from the fly. I like to use two orange and two yellow for this patterns but the choice is really yours. Once the Feelers are secure build up your thread to create the carrot like body shape.
Catch in the end of the Gold Oval Tinsel.
Catch in the Black Wool.
At this stage I always varnish/glue the body before wynding on the wool. This helps with the longevity of the fly and stops the wool from slipping.
Wynd on the wool keeping the carrot shape as you work your way forward.
Wynd on the Gold Oval Rib.
Tie in the Yellow Hackle.
Tie in the Orange Hackle.
Tie in the Black Hackle.
Pull the feelers through your fingers and trim them to remove the feathered ends. This will make them all the same length.
Varnish the head of the fly.
 The finished fly

The finished fly with cone attached.
