River Tweed River Report Week Ending 13th March
With what
seems like never ending wash outs, another 4 days pretty much lost last week to
rising, dirty water. The week started off quite promising with 16 springers
reported on Monday, with a few more caught on Tuesday before the water broke.
The only fish landed after Tuesday was a springer at Upper Floors on Friday.
Conditions are looking a bit more favourable this coming week so hopefully on
the back of these waters there will be a head of fish pushing through.
Fishing
at Makerstoun on Monday Mr Iain Wilson landed 2 and lost a 3rd. Mr Steve
Robbins and Mr Jonathan Reddin had a brilliant day on the Lees on Monday
landing 5 sea liced springers. Steve landed 1 in the morning from the Cauld
Stream and managed a 2nd from the Learmouth Stream in the afternoon,
while Jonathan landed 3 from the Cauld Stream in the afternoon. Ghillie Mr Dean
Cockburn landed West Learmouths 1st of the season from the Learmouth
Stream.
Above Kelso 5 fish were reported, Between Kelso and
Coldstream 18 were reported and below Coldstream 0 were reported. With the best
fishing being on the Lees beat where 6 springers were landed.
23 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 14lb Salmon
caught on the Junction beat.

Lower
Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Week commencing 8th March, By
this time of the year we would usually have our regular let rods coming up for
their weeks fishing, some owners coming up to fish and the odd day of fishing
ourselves. But with this year’s restrictions and uncertainty of what are you or
what aren’t allowed to do. Not to mention the whole English and Scottish border
and fishing etc etc. We have been largely struggling for fishers. Which in turn
is nice that we get a chance to fish more than we have ever before, although we
want to be able to welcome back our fishers as soon as we can. Apart from the
odd local rod we have the place to ourselves. So, frustrating that this season
seems to have more water and floods than any of us would like. Just when the
water level drops the threat of rain comes.... sometimes we don’t even get wet
as the showers never gets down the valley. It’s up in those hills where the
damage is done.
Monday
this week the water fining down well, almost crystal clear for the time of
year. A really nice wadeable height, you can reach all the lies, cover all the
streams and go home feeling pretty sure if ‘he/she’ was there we would have got
them! And Monday we did. A nice fresh fish about 6lb just after lunch. Nothing
gets the anticipation levels up like landing a springer, and the level of disappointment
every cast thereafter when you don’t get another. Because if there’s one there
it won’t be by itself. But that’s always followed by that warm feeling of
success of being able to report the fish that night, knowing it will be seen by
the masses and then the messages flow, ‘how big?’ ‘Where from?’ ‘Who got it?’
‘What on? Fly/spinner?’ Questions you never tire of.... as it’s the sign of the
success!
Tuesday
felt better Monday, great height but nothing came, then on Wednesday as what
happened most of February the water level rose... and kept rising all day, and
left the rest of the week contending with high and coloured water.
But as
the week drew to a close the long range forecast looks pretty settled for the
most part, so fingers crossed we have a start like last week but hopefully a
different middle and ending to the week! And we can find some more fish to add
to the tally and more happy smiling faces for the lucky few. As the year moves
on and the weather warms the chance of fish is getting better. Who knows what
this week will give us? We will soon find out! Tight lines. Tom”
On Upper North Wark, The beat is currently closed to the
public until there is a change in the restrictions. A bit on the low side for
us at the start of the week and by Wednesday the rising was rising and full of
muck which ruined the end of the week and any hope of catching. Any enquiries

Lees Head Boatman Mr
Malcolm Campbell reports “Not much to report after
Monday when local rods Jonathan Reddin and Steve Robins had 5 licers, Steve
getting 2 in the morning and Johnathon getting 3 from the Lower cauld in the
afternoon, he might have had more but fell in right over his head "early
bath and all that". The quicker it gets back below 2'0" the better.

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom
in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from
the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 6” and the water temperature is 42.
At this
stage in the report I would normally have my suggested beats to book for the
week ahead, however with all the Covid Restrictions in place and each beat
using their own guidelines I will refrain from suggestions until the river is
opened back up for fishing a bit more normally.
The
forecast this coming week, Tomorrow will be dry with sunny
spells, but cloud will increase from the west in the evening bringing the
chance of some patchy light rain or drizzle. Winds easing to a light breeze in
the afternoon. Early rain will clear on Tuesday morning, with sunny
spells developing in the afternoon. Wednesday should be mainly sunny as high
pressure moves into the region. However, there may be some patchy cloud at
times. Thursday will be a cloudy and windy day and there is the chance of a
shower or the odd spot of rain.

Look at
what to bring for the week ahead, looking at the weather for this coming week the
water levels should settle in as the week goes on. Start of the week could be
on Wetcel 2 and progressing on to a floating line or intermediate line with
assorted poly leaders as the week goes on. Black & Yellow, Tosh, Willie
Gunn, Monkey and Posh Tosh are all capable to tempting fish on 1” -1½” tubes.
On the spinning front Rapala and 28gm Toby should bring results.
