River Tweed River Report Week Ending 12th May

Another tough week with rather bright conditions and what seems like a constant daily wind causing a few issues. Catches are still on the low side for the time of year, but a few more have been seen travelling through the bottom beats towards the end of the week.

Above Kelso 20 fish were reported, Mr Al Meek landed a nice 6lber from the Boat Pool on Drybrugh Upper, while on Bemersyde Mr John Smith landed a 9lber from the Stream and a Willie Gunn, Mr Robert Lamont landed a lovely fish from Dish.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 17 fish were reported, Mr Keith Oates landed a nice 7lb fish from the Junction.

Below Coldstream 9 fish were reported, Mr Niall Morrison landed a lovely wee fish from Norham.

51 Salmon and 4 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 16lb Salmon caught on the Rutherford & Hendersyde Beat’s.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “The rods had a bit of reward for their efforts last week landing 4 springer’s. With the chance of a few more. Nice to end the week with a nice fresh 16 pounder on a full floating line. On a worrying note though most of our fish this last few weeks have been seal damaged”

On Upper North Wark, a week with some strimming and a few days fishing resulted on 1 lost fish on Saturday for Mr Jonathan Hufford on the fly from the Top Island and an offer in the back of the isle. Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Eventually off the mark with 7lb very fresh but not liced Brownback last Wednesday and 8lb springer with long tailed sea lice on Thursday last week. This week we finished with 6lb liced springer on Thursday and a liced 4lb sea trout on Saturday evening. Still very quiet for this time of year, but good river conditions down here at last, after 3 months of constant washout. Let's hope for some fish to come soon”

Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “Picked up 2 fish and lost 1. Starting to see some fish. Plenty of availability on the beat with this continued dry weather it’s definitely worth a try. Syndicate rods are available and from mid-June evening tickets for Sea Trout fishing, contact me on 07530026036 for details”

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder dropped away all week and just one clean 8lb fish caught on Saturday. Good to see a few more sea trout entering the system so with rain forecast over the next few days prospects look good for next week”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 10” and the water temperature is 52.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Tweedhill, Horncliffe, Ladykirk and Pedwell beats, if you fancy fishing the middle river, the Upper Dryburgh & Lower Dryburgh beats should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, the best of the sunshine on Tuesday is expected at first, but it will soon become cloudy with some patchy light rain or drizzle. It will then be largely dry through the course of Tuesday night. Wednesday will be largely dry with sunny spells, but at times it could be rather cloudy. Dry overnight too, with long clear spells. Largely dry on Thursday, but cloud may linger.

With water levels finally starting to drop in and water temperatures starting to rise Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 8 to 10 should be the order of the day,  I would suggest are Copper Cascade, Girnel Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp and Underghillie should bring success. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala, Toby or Flying C should bring results.

River Tweed River Report Final Week Of The Season Ending 30^th November 2017

Well….that’s it all over and done with, I don’t think there was much fishing effort made over the last 4 days of the season. There are lots of theories to what went wrong with the autumn run, we’ll just need to wait and see what’s going to be suggested going forward.

6 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout were reported for the last 4 days of the season, the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught on the Glenormiston Beat.

The Season So Far tally has finished on 6162 Salmon and 1688 Sea Trout. I would expect this to rise once the catches from non-reporting beats and the tributaries are reported. 

Spring availability in now be listed on Fishtweed and via beat agents so get planning for the 2018 season

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Boatman/Ghillies/Fishers/Secretaries who gave me regular weekly reports, without them this report wouldn’t be the same. Mr Tom Leslie for his wonderful support and kind gestures for the Boatmen and Ghillies of the river,  Mr Alex Knox of the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso for hosting our boatman’s end of season dinner along with  providing a wonderful service and high quality food on a regular basis to the fishers of the River Tweed.

Tweedswood Head Ghillie Mr Kevin Patterson reports “With the season drifting out to sea on a probable 8ft wave it’s with mixed feelings we look back and for some it’s been a great time and fish caught for others it’s been hard going but over all we are in the middle when it was good it was good but when poor very poor no balance no guarantees mind you there never is .Thank you to you all that came tried and made my job so enjoyable as a tweed Ghillie because without you guys and girls i would be out a job . For fishing hard when it was testing and sitting in a nice warm fishing hut might have been favoured and for getting stuck in when others around were not quite as keen i am very lucky to have a hard core team or two and it just goes to show what we can do in a pretty poor Tweed season we manage to get a good score of 104 so far and i am very pleased with that .Top salmon caught by size was a fine 26lb salmon by Mr Steven Ferguson that was quite a change in that we didn't get any big salmon over the last few season and this was a good strong fighting fish hope it gets on to the redds to complete his journey . Another salmon that sticks in the Memory was Charlie’s personal best 22lb salmon which was a hard weeks fishing reward plus a fantastic win on the horses on the final afternoon that’s what it’s all about at Tweedswood we have great fun I hope that you will return again to see what it throws at us in 2018 so to you all cheers from the Tweedswood Team. Middle Pavillion Head Ghillie Mr Mick Charlton reports “Hi All, Well that's 2017 Salmon fishing over and done. (Not before time some might say!)
Firstly November, The first fish of the month went to Mr Jamie Boyd on his first visit to the beat, A personal best for Jamie (12 lb) Caught on a Flamethrower from the Boat Shiel. The 13th and 2 1 for Mr Bob Bulloch from the Whirls. Then another personal best and as it turned out our biggest fish of the season. A 21 lb fish For Mrs Jan Christie caught in the Whirls on a Cascade. 2 fish that week for Mr George Holdsworth, 1 from the Elm Weil and the other from the Whirls.
The last fish of the season was caught by Mr Phil Dickinson making his first ever visit to the beat. Caught in the Boat Shiel on a Gledswood Shrimp.
Not a November to get excited about for numbers of fish but it was noticeable that the fish were as in October much larger than average.
Overall the season has followed the pattern of the last 3 years, spring was as in previous years steady, with fish coming steadily from early April onwards for whatever reason we seemed to lose more fish than normal!
Summer and plenty of water! Good old barbecue summer! On the plus side this meant a decent run of fish through the summer months.
Autumn and as in the last few season no Autumn run to speak of, plenty of fish about sadly mostly older fish and hard to interest in the fly, on the plus side most of these fish were in double figures with one or two very large fish about.

Onwards and upwards let’s put this season to bed and look ahead to 2018 and hope the theories are right (depending on which one you believe!) Fingers crossed we see more fish returning to the Tweed and we can have a season to remember for the right reasons.

Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “A new year, fresh fish bring it on”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “After this season I don’t think it can be any worse, as long as we get the conditions a bit more favourable next spring”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “A very tough year, massively disappointing lack of an autumn run. Some months have seen more fish than normal, so fingers crossed these months continue to improve and hopefully the fish numbers next year are better than this year and the last 4 years”

On Upper North Wark, the season never really got going for us, losing the water level at the wrong time going into April when we were picking away through March. July proved to be our more productive month of the season with 10 Salmon landed. Sea Trout numbers were reasonable this season to. The autumn just never got going and was a long hard slog. Looking forward to the 2018 season with optimistic hopes for the spring and summer fishing and hope some of the theories been bounced around for the autumn run comes true. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our fishers who fished through the season and look forward to welcoming you’s back next season. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “The last 4 days dragged by as we waited for the 30th and close of play for the 2017 season. The only highlight was a 9lb hen fish caught by Tom Wadsworth at the Iron Gate point on Monday, this was a special fish as it was Toms birthday and the first fish he's caught on a fly.The water conditions were perfect but just no fish.”

Hawick Angling Club reports “That is the end of the Salmon season and I think that most anglers will be glad that it is over. There are very few fish being seen and also more worryingly is the lack of redds being seen. There has been little fishing activity over the past few weeks and this must rank as the worst back end for many years”

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Mr David Cowan reports “Despite difficult fishing conditions on the main stem of the Tweed the Whiteadder benefited from higher river levels than normal and fish ran through most of the summer.

Total salmon caught amounted to 56 fish with 20 sea trout, an improvement on the last few years. It was also encouraging to see more anglers on the water during the season. A day permit at £30 is a good substitute to lost days when the Tweed is flooded off. The Berwick & District Angling Association AGM will be held on the 10th January at 7pm at the Black and Gold Social Club in Berwick where all season permit holders will be welcome.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 24^th June

Coming off the back of the best week’s catch of the season so far, hopes were high for a reasonable week. However, the return of the sunny, windy weather, combined with the lower river levels didn’t help, but despite this fish were caught throughout the river. This season seems to be quite sporadic from week to week.

Birgham Dub had the best fishing of the week landing 21 Salmon and 4 Sea Trout, the floors beats managed 13 while on the Mertoun beats 8 were landed. Middle Pavilion landed 3 for the week, inc a nice fish for Mr Graham Thomas from the Whirls. West Learmouth and Milne Graden picked away throughout the week.

Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “Only the 1 for the week, seem to have lost my fish to Rutherford”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “7 for the week, mostly fresh with the biggest fish being 13lbs. Lots of other offers during a week of tricky conditions with bright days and strong winds. Small flies are doing the business for some good summer sport”

 The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3” and the water temperature is 63.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Middle Pavilion, Lennel, Ladykirk and Tweedhill beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast this coming week looks like we could be in for some proper wet weather. Given recent catches on the back of these lifts this could help with the catches.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 10th June 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 10^th June

After weeks of low water we finally got some much needed rain with the river rising 3 times over the week. The water peaked on Wednesday at around 5ft, but remained quite coloured and beery with conditions mainly suiting the spinner.

Mr Brian Douglas reports “ Fishing with Mr Iain Wilson at Lower Mertoun for the latter part of the week, we had 2 salmon and a sea trout on Thursday, Friday was a wash out, but we were back in business on Saturday with 4 fish between us and another 4 lost,3 to the fly and one to the rap.

Catches were scattered over the river, the best catches aiming from the Mertoun beats with 18, and Junction with 16 Salmon & 11 Sea Trout.

Upper and Lower Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “Six for the week, the boys did well sticking with the fly in the coloured water conditions.”

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “7 for the week, frustrated with an unsettled river but much needed lift to clean things out”

At Upper North Wark we were very glad to see some flow going through the beat and get back fishing after all these weeks of low water conditions. We fished on Saturday on falling water but the colour was still pretty beery but we had some success with Mr Jonathan Lane landing a fine 10lber from the Snipe Pool on the Carrot X-Rap.

Mr Douglas Aitken reports “We finally got the the long awaited flood which saw us eased off on Wednesday at Ladykirk and then Thursday on Middle Mertoun. Simon Barr with his guest went for a cast Friday afternoon at middle and hooked 4 and landed 1 in very coloured water. We arrived to a steady but still coloured river Saturday morning and shortly after 9am the heavens opened and it was very unpleasant till mid afternoon. Fishing with floaters and a range of sinking leaders and uv yellow tubes we managed 4 salmon to 10lbs and 2 sea trout to 5lbs. We fished hard and were rewarded with some Tweed silver. Richard Vainer with his catch.”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 11” and the water temperature is 57.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Upper North Wark, Lower Makerstoun and the Dryburgh beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast looks quite settled this week with mostly cloudy conditions with brisk south westerly winds.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10 & tubes around 1” should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Aurora Cascade, Girnal Shrimp, Junction Shrimp, and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Carrot Rapala, Tobies in 18gm – 28gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. River Tweed River Report Week Ending 22nd April

Last week saw no real improvement in the catches with just the odd fish here and there throughout the river. The weather remained pretty settled with some days of brisk westerly winds.

Middle Pavillion had 2 for the week Inc one for Mr Mickley from the Whirls

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr Reports “Had a sea liced fish on Wednesday for Mr John Murray and a very fresh one on Friday for Mr Borras. Not much fly life about and even fewer trout”

Speaking with Makerstoun's Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle, "2 from Upper this week. Mr Alex Knox owner of The Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso, landed 1 on Monday”

 On the Junction, the Langford Party had 3 for the week Inc a nice fish for John Taylor. 

On Upper Hendersyde, Mr Jim Reid landed a nice 8lber on the fly from the Wintercast on Friday.

Sprouston landed 2 fish for the week. Both been caught on Monday with the best being 15lbs.

While on Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “One fish for the week and One Pull"

On Birgham Dub 4 were landed for the week, all sea liced and been caught using Micro Tubes and sink tips. 87 Year Old  Mr Barry Whelam, designer of the Hardy Type 2 Reel was amongst the successful rods.

At Upper North Wark fishing was quiet, good effort made by the rods but with no success

Tillmouth had 2 for the week.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 6” and the water temperature is 50.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would recommend Pedwell, Ladykirk and Horncliffe beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

 The next week the water levels are expected to remain pretty steady with the dry weather and cold nights we have had lately. The forecast looks quite settled with no significant rain in the forecast, and we could really do with wee lift would to freshen things up. Conditions are really good for the majority of beats at the moment and with the lower water conditions I would expect fish to start being caught below Coldstream.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10, tubes around the ½” to ¾” size should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Ghillie, Underghillie & Girnal Shrimp should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Black/Gold Rapala  Tobies in 18gm – 28gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success.
