River Tweed River Report Week Ending 16th September 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 16th September

A week of unsettled weather brought regular small lifts of water which seem to have got the older fish on the move up through the system. We saw a vast improvement in the catches above Kelso with some fish starting to be caught on the upper river.

Reports up and down the river were mostly of older fish with just the odd fresher fish, but there did seem to be a few more fresher fish around towards the end of the week. 336 Salmon and 55 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 25lb Salmon Bemersyde.

Above Kelso 127 Salmon were reported with the best of the catches made on the Mertoun Beats 13, Rutherford 15, Makerston Beats 13, Upper Floors 17 & Lower Floors with 13.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Seen some old fish in the week running and we had a 15lb fresh fish that was returned. Sandy Scott landed a fish of 25lbs on Friday. I expected to have we seen some more fish on Saturday.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 130 Salmon were reported with Junction 15, Hendersyde 21. Sprouston 13, Lower North Wark 15, South Wark 12, West Learmouth 13 & Lees 22 having the better of the fishing.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Managed to pick away every day in unsettled conditions and did see a few fresh fish on the move. We ended the week with 21 Salmon and 5 Sea Trout”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Mostly old fish this week, saw enough fish to think we could have had more. We landed a fresh 18lb hen fish on Saturday afternoon. Hopefully a sign of some fresher fish for next week, fingers crossed”

On Upper North Wark, we saw the odd fish in the pools. Mr Ben Crowther landed a nice Salmon from the Mill Stream on Friday while on Thursday Mr Alex Knox of the fabulous Contented Vine Restaurant in Kelso managed a 4lb Sea Trout.

Below Coldstream 48 Salmon were landed with the best of the catches coming from Tillmouth 10 and Ladykirk Beats with 17.

Milne Graden Head Boatman Mr Kevin Wright reports “Only 4 for the week, 1 fresh grilse along with 3 coloured fish. The regular little rises didn’t help and fish didn't seem to settle with us. We also struggled with black water that came from the Till for 2 days. Seen coloured fish moving all week but not many off them”

Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Picking away slowly on Lower Ladykirk with 8 for the week, with 2 fresh salmon (both hens and returned) and the rest grilse, mainly coloured. On Ladykirk we had 10, which was 5 salmon to 17lb and 5lb grilse and very fresh sea trout 4lb”

On the tributaries, the main beats on the Till picked away after the rise in the water levels with Flodden 5, Tiptoe 2, Lower Tindal 3 and Redscar and Upper Tindal 3.

Mr David Cowan of Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary reports” After low water conditions for almost three weeks the Whiteadder started to rise on Thursday and is still rising this morning. No fish to report this week but prospects looking good for Monday onwards with high water and fish entering the river”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 1” and the water temperature is 52.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Tweedswood, Bemersyde & Ladykirk beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.
The forecast this coming week looks quite settled this week with no real rain forecast other than some light rain around Thursday.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have information and photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Water temperatures are starting to cool down dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10, if you prefer tubes over dressed flies 3/4” and 1” should be about right. Copper Cascade, Cascader, Newtyle Shrimp, Ghillie, Pot Belly Pig, Snaelda, Red Frances. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie
