River Tweed River Report Week Ending 17th February 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 17th February

The water clarity and levels pretty much ruined the whole weeks fishing with Tuesday and Saturday been the only days with fishable water below Kelso.

Above Kelso the Floors beats landed 3 for the week, while below Kelso, Mr Eric Bell landed an 8lber from the Wintercast on Upper Hendersyde on Tuesday, on the same day Carham got off the mark for the season with 2 lovely springer’s landed in the Kitchen Rocks Pool.

On Friday Mr Lee Ross caught South Wark’s 1st of the season with a nice wee springer landed on a 2” Yellow and Blue Copper Tube from the Temple Pool, with Head Boatman Richard Farr on the oars.

There seemed to be a few Sea Trout about this week with 4 been landed. Lower Birgham landed the best one with Mr Stewart Binns landed a cracking 9lber on the Fly, While on Upper North Wark Mr Hugh Newton landed 2 from the Snipe Pool on a 28gm Silver Toby. Hendersyde also landed one on Tuesday.

On Upper North Wark, pretty much faces with dirty water most of the week. Mr Hugh Newton landed 2 Sea Trout from the Snipe on Saturday.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “Not a lot to say really, cold, water up and down on a daily basis. Had a few kelts. River needs to really drop back so we can get round the beat and maybe it'll get some fish to stop on the beat.

8 Salmon and 4 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 8lb Salmon caught on the Upper Hendersyde Beat.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 8” and the water temperature is 36.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Lower Makerstoun, Upper North Wark should all have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, Cloudy and wet start on Tuesday with outbreaks of rain pushing eastwards to leave the afternoon drier and brighter. Turning chilly overnight with clear spells, mist and fog patches forming locally. Dry but increasingly cloudy through Wednesday and overnight. Remaining cloudy on Thursday but largely dry with winds picking up through the day.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Most beats will be fishing various sinking density lines with poly leaders on the end at the time of year it has to be a Black and Yellow and if that fails a Yellow and Black! Copper tubes around 1.5” should be the order of the day, some anglers are choosing to fish more with Aluminium tubes and using the fly line to get down. Pattern’s I would suggest are Black and Yellow (Tosh), Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp and Spring Ghillie should bring success. A wee personal favourite of mine is the Black and Yellow Samurai Shrimp at this time of year. Spinning started on the 15th so if you like to have a wee go Salmo Toby, Devon Minnow fished nice and slow should bring results.
As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
