River Tweed River Report Week Ending 17th March 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 17th March

Well another week has come and went and what a miserable week of weather it was. The flood of last Sunday kept getting topped up during the week which kept the colour in the river nearly every day of the week. Wednesday proved to be the best day for clarity and 5 springer’s were reported on Fishtweed for this day. More colour came in on Thursday and another rise pretty much made it an unfishable colour for the rest of the week.

Mr Iain Wilson from the Borders Gunroom in St Boswells landed 2 lovely springers from the Upper Makerstoun beat on Wednesday, while on Thursday Mr Alex Knox of the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso landed a cracking 14lb springer from the Carham beat on a Monkey Fly from Tay Salmon Fly.

Hopefully the river settles in this week, this morning (Sunday) the clarity was looking much improved just need to await the mild weather and get plenty more snow melt!

After these long cold days on the river, it’s well worth a trip to the Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso, fabulous food and a fine selection of drinks to choose from it’s a must visit for any trip to the Tweed.  To book a table call Alex on 01573224777

On Upper North Wark, we are looking forward to some settled water levels to get some fishing done.

9 Salmon and 6 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 13lb Salmon caught on the Upper Makerstoun Beat.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft 6” and the water temperature is 36.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Lower Makerstoun, Upper Hendersyde and Upper North Wark should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, a very cold start on Tuesday, but it will be a mostly dry day with sunny spells. However, cloud will push in from the west by the end of the day and the night should be less cold. A lot of cloud and windier on Wednesday with some patchy rain. Thursday will be rather cloudy with light rain and it will feel a touch milder.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Most beats will be fishing various sinking density lines with poly leaders on the end at the time of year it has to be a Black and Yellow and if that fails a Yellow and Black! Copper tubes around 1.5” should be the order of the day, some anglers are choosing to fish more with Aluminium tubes and using the fly line to get down. Pattern’s I would suggest are Black and Yellow (Tosh), Posh Tosh, Gledswood Shrimp and Spring Ghillie should bring success. A wee personal favourite of mine is the Black and Yellow Samurai Shrimp at this time of year. If you like to give the spinner a go, the Salmo Toby, Devon Minnow fished nice and slow should bring results.
As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
