River Tweed River Report Week Ending 8^th September

The catches the last couple of weeks have remained steady with the bulk of fish still been caught below Coldstream, as would be anticipated in the current conditions. On Monday we have steady drizzly rain which overnight put the river up 10 inches below Kelso with most the water coming down the Teviot which peaked at 2ft 6” at Hawick. This brought is some grubby dark water which affected the fishing at the start of the week. The weather turned cooler towards the end of the week with morning temperatures around 8-10 degrees, this has helped drop the water temperature and brought some of the older fish back on the grab.

Ladykirk and Tillmouth continue to be the best performing beats with 34 and 60 this week, Milne Graden sandwiched between these 2 beats managed 5 and lost a few. Birgham Dub picked away and finished the week with 15.

The continued wait for some proper rain goes on and not a great deal of rain on the forecast for this week, really need it to come soon, if it comes to late in the season these fish down the bottom end will be on the charge or the old story it will start raining and forget to stop!

Friday 14^th September see’s the end of spinning for the season as the river moved into the fly only period 15^th September until 30^th November.

Mr Jonathan Lane fishing at Rutherford landed 1 salmon and a sea trout on Saturday, losing a further 3 fish. Fishing at Bemersyde 84 year old Mr Rodger Wheater landed a nice fresh fish from the Boat Pool. On the Junction 71 year old Mr Bill Warnett landed his 1^st ever salmon from Hempseedford ably assisted by boatman Pud Murray.

42 were reported caught above Kelso, 50 fish were reported between Kelso and Coldstream and 114 reported below Coldstream.

On the River Till, 3 Sea Trout were reported, 2 on Redscar and Upper Tindal and 1 at Tiptoe.

224 Salmon and 20 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught on the Boleside and Ladykirk Beats.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A bit of a struggle at the start of the wk. Another wee lift mainly from the Teviot making it a bit grimy and colour hanging around for a couple of days. As it cleared though we started to get some action and on Sat we had a very frustrating day with 1 salmon landed and 5 or 6 fish coming short of the fly and not quite connecting. Ended the week with 4”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “3 fish landed and quite a few pulls and touches. Some fresh fish seen and the odd coloured resident starting to hold up in a few pools. Was nice to see some running fish. Fingers crossed for some rain.”

On Upper North Wark, another week of low water with the level down to minus 4 inch on our gauge, badly needing rain soon.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A quiet week until Saturday when we had a fair bit of action in the morning. 4 landed 4 lost and a lot of wee pulls plus splashes at a Sunray/Collie dug. Perhaps the drop in water temp switched them on or some old fish moved up a beat or two. #12 cascade, posh tosh doubles and a wee Red dot sized cone head. See Tweedbeats instagram page for photos.”

Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Another great week for us with a combined catch of 34 (33 reported) and roughly 20 lost, and lots of plucks and pulls. Ladykirk caught 6 Grilse and 5 Salmon up to 18lb, and Ladykirk Lower finished with 12 Grilse and 11 Salmon up to 14 lb. A big “Well done!” to everyone involved! 
Special mention to 1st time Salmon fisher catching 5 on Friday and Guest rod’s 1st every Salmon on fly on Monday (in unbelievably mucky water)”

Horncliffe Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “Slow start to the week, 4 fish lost on Monday that was the story for the week a total of 12 fish lost and 6 landed to 15lb. Some availability this week, still plenty of dish in the beat the biggest problem is getting them to stay in the hooks”

Dave Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Nothing to report from Whiteadder.”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2” and the water temperature is 56.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Tillmouth, Ladykirk, and Horncliffe beats should have a chance of some action this week. If you fancy the middle river Rutherford and the Dryburgh Beats will be worth a cast.

The forecast this coming week, fairly windy and cool on Tuesday with a fresh to strong south westerly breeze. There will also be cloudy skies and some scattered showers. Clear spells, winds easing overnight and a few showers possible. Wednesday will be breezy, cool and bright with sunny spells but some showers cannot be ruled out. Mainly fine for much of Thursday, but with a risk of rain later in the day.

With water levels still back to near summer levels and the temperature is back into the 50s. Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 10 to 12 should be the order of the day, in the deeper pools it might be worth a try with little ¼” or ½” copper tubes. I would suggest are Copper Cascade, Black Frances, Gledswood Shrimp, Kylie Shrimp, Red Frances and Sunray Shadow should bring success. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala or Toby should bring results.
