River Tweed River Report Week Ending 28th September 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 28th September

Well last week was all about the weather and with daily rises and dirty water near all week conditions couldn’t have been much trickier with the river been fly only now, the Rapala would surely have accounted for a fish on 2 with the dirty water conditions. Seems to be a few river fish been seeing splashing about with odd fresh ones amongst them. If they are coming we should see something this week with a much more settled forecast ahead.

The fish were pretty evenly scattered about the river with above Kelso 22 fish were reported, between Kelso and Coldstream 23 fish were reported and below Coldstream 23 fish were reported.

Fishing at Boleside in very challenging conditions at the end of the week Mr Per Villhelmson was rewarded for his efforts landed 2 fish weighing 12lbs and 5lbs. Mr Nick Williams also had success landing 2 grilse. Fishing at Upper North Wark Mr Terry Pitron landed a lovely wee sea trout on a Cascade tube fly from the Middle Island. Fishing at Lower Birgham on Tuesday Mr Mike Heaps had success.
On the River Till, no fish were reported.
78 Salmon and 16 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught on the Ladykirk beat.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “a tough frustrating week with an up and down river and very little opportunity of fishing with any confidence. We managed to land a couple of salmon and although they weren't that fresh were a welcome bit of sport.”

Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “This last week was one of very unsettled water heights and colours. Only one fish landed this week on Tuesday by Mr Mike Heaps. Plenty of fish and fresh ones seen as well at the beginning of the week. But the high water level and dirty water made it tough getting onto the water to try and find them. With the water level dropping over the weekend, this next week is one of high optimism hoping some fresh autumn fish have found their way up the system. There is a lot of questions on the runs of fish entering the river. Will our questions be answered? Only time will tell. Tight lines Tom.”

On Upper North Wark, grubby road wash water followed by unsettled brown much with almost daily rises. Great effort made by the rods and Mr Terry Pitron landed a Sea Trout from the Middle Island.

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “A slow week with unsettled water again. Best fish 9lb the rest smaller grilse. There were quite a few fish moving through the Temple on Friday morning but I didn't see any fresh ones. We'll see next week if this water "brings them in"

Berwick and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “After a long spell of low water we were pleased to see some rain this week. One salmon around 8 lb came off Clarabad on Wednesday then the heavy rain over Wednesday night saw the Whiteadder rise with most of the coloured water coming in from the Blackadder at Allanton. Two sea trout about 3lb were banked from beat 1 prior to the water rising to over two ft on Friday night. Levels began to fall over Saturday and river dropping in nicely for Monday as long as the rain stays to the south as expected.”

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2ft and the water temperature is 54.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Boleside, Bemersyde and Lower Birgham beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, once any mist and fog patches clear, tomorrow morning will be bright with some early sunshine. However, cloud will tend to build in the afternoon with the chance of a few spots of rain later. Rain on Monday night may linger for a time on Tuesday morning, leaving a largely dry day with bright or sunny spells but it will feel chilly with a northerly breeze. A frost is possible overnight. After a cold start, Wednesday will be dry and bright with sunny spells. Thursday then looks likely to become more unsettled as rain and freshening winds push in from the west.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, floating lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Junction Shrimp, Willie Gunn Snaelda, Rogie and Red Frances, Cascade are all capable to tempting fish on 1” – 1.5” tubed or dressed flies in size 6s.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
