River Tweed River Report Week Ending 29th February 2020 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 29th February

Well the lack of reports the last couple of weeks have unfortunately not been because of holidays in sunnier climates but the never ending barrage of rain and wind which has kept the river pretty much unfishable for the best part of 3 weeks and at the time of writing we have another 7ft dirty flood running through.
I would like to wish Dean Cockburn all the best as he takes up the position of Head Ghillie on the West Learmouth beat on Monday.
There have been the odd fish reported during the odd occasion where beats could get out for a cast. On the 19th Mr Creighton Harvey landed a nice fish from the Slates on Upper Floors, Mr Jonathan Reddin landed a cracking 7lb sea liced Sea Trout on the Lees. Elsewhere Upper Hendersyde landed 1 on the fly from the Ferry Pool and Sprouston had a good day on the 28th landing 3 springer’s and a sea trout.
Above Kelso no fish were reported, Between Kelso and Coldstream 4 were reported and below Coldstream none were reported.
On the River Till, no fish were reported.
4 Salmon were landed for the week with the best fish 12lb Salmon caught on the Sprouston beat.

An interesting read from Tweedswood Head Ghillie Mr Kevin Patterson “Morning everyone from a very blustery Scottish borders with probably storm someone coming this weekend lost count of who it is next but would happily not have them visit again . I put my hand up and let out the secret that I’ve been building a extension on to my house and the minute i struck the pick into the ground to get started its done everything around newstead I’ve only the Eildion hills to come back as a volcano to have the full set believe me so that’s where your weathers come from winter building programme ah. I spent quite a few days in the head waters of the river in late November early December re living my youth on the Manor Water and the Meldions burn and one foray up the Lyne water to have a look at the salmon spawning I can’t believe how there are as many redds as there used to be especially on the upper manor water. There were a lot of fish spawning and the size was also interesting plenty in the 15lb to 20lb and not at all bothered by me looking on very settled fish great to see them in these rivers and i just hope they get the chance to hatch and return to sea through what has now become a gauntlet of vermin waiting for them. The Meldions burn has been always a well-kept secret only two meters wide with deep undercut banks the main spawner’s are sea trout and when i had a look in lower the redds were finished but plenty all with the eggs stored away for spring a few salmon right up the top but not many but that was always the case you could be right in the top of the highlands when up there it’s a great place and if the scientists ever get out there office it would be a great place to set up a lot of information finding things . My over view of my visit was goosanders present on both the Meldions and Manor water in good numbers on the manor always been a few but sadly to many up there with tweed being big where else are they going to feed on to the smaller burns manor water is tap water clear and goes from 6ft brown to 5 feet clear in three hours it is a wonderful river and you never hear very much about it supports a lot of returning spawning salmon still to this day.
It’s been a bit tricky fishing wise but it’s still winter and is frustrating for us all but it will come good soon and there will be a big spread of salmon all the way up the river you can always live in hope but that’s what it’s all about waiting and taking the chance when it comes along .Springs always an interesting time you don’t know if it’s coming or going weather and fish wise but worth the effort if you get a chance of a spring salmon .14 years ago we were all doom and gloom about the spring salmon and the Scientists had us putting in tags with pliers and we came through worm ban then you put the first back can kept your second spring salmon the big needles with a tag on the end we spent years on this and it just all died away all the stuff we had to do i still ask what we learned as I never heard an outcome .It was with unreal surprise that i read we are going to again start putting in floy tags to the salmon surely after 14 years of all this that went before what difference or answers are we going to get apart from the salmon enter stay in the river go upstream then spawn it’s not rocket science all this it’s been happening from the year dot but I just feel leave them alone to do their thing stop meddling with them because after all the years thieve just got less since we started doing all this stuff to them.
It’s going to be interesting to see if the sea trout are as good this season as last season was great thank goodness they come into the river the sport from them is second to none and we get good fishing effort from these fish in early June till august they go of very quickly upstream again they can be in the burns early October out in two days hence the sea trout kelts bonfire night onward they will be a big part of our summer fishing again this year. It’s such a pity i can’t put pictures on this report as it would have been great to support it with my pictures from my adventures this winter but I’m busy setting up a web site of my own that i will have total freedom of and I’m looking forward to supporting my fishing and trips out with pictures as a wall of words to me is totally boring most people if like me would read half way and click but a picture keeps you interested but fish pal are not on board at all with even trying to let you put on pictures to reports .
If you are looking for a day on the river with someone that has 29 years’ experience in full time ghilling and casting instruction from the river Tweeds fully qualified instructor give me a call 07971828086 and let’s go out on the river and enjoy ourselves no matter the situation cheers Kevin Patterson. PS just going out to tie a slater to my roof in case he gets blown off”

On Upper North Wark, what a month it has been high dirty water for nearly 3 weeks, hopefully get some settled fishing weather soon. Really is getting boring this weather now!

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

The stunning Saddler Cottage, located within the grounds of Tillmouth Park in now under new ownership. Suitable for fishers and families this lovely cottage is very handily placed for fishing the Lower and Bottom Tweed beats. If you would like more information please check out the link https://www.crabtreeandcrabtree.com/properties/saddler-cottage/

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 7ft 0” and falling with the water temperature is 38.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend Dryburgh Upper, Rutherford, Upper Hendersyde and Upper North Wark beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, A few wintry showers tomorrow morning and some sunshine. Later in the day, cloud will build as rain and hill snow starts to edge in from the west. Moderate southwest winds. Tuesday will be partly cloudy with a scattering of showers. The shower may turn wintry on the highest hills again. Wednesday looks set to be largely dry, though the odd isolated is still possible. Sunshine and showers again on Thursday. Cool throughout.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

Look at what to bring for the week aheads fishing, conditions are looking grim for the start of the week if not in the pub sinking lines with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most places with Black and Yellow, Junction Shrimp, Temple Shrimp, Willie Gunn Snaelda, and Rogie are all capable to tempting fish on 1.5” – 2” tubes. On the spinning front a big toby should be worth a go.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
