River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 20th March
Covid
restrictions continue to affect the fishing effort on the river with mostly
ghillies and occasional local rods having a go. The fishing does seem quite
sporadic with nothing for hours then land 2 fish in 5 minutes then nothing
after that. If you are in the right place at the right time as these pods pass
you are in with a great chance out with that it’s a case of perseverance. The
warmer weather has helped the fly life with Olives and March Browns coming on
daily now with the odd trout starting to rise to them.
Fishing
at Makerstoun on Monday Mr Iain Wilson landed a nice fresh 6lber. Mr George
Windrum landed the 1st fish of the BDAA water on the River
Whiteadder a cracking fish of 10lbs caught on a size 14 Yellow Ally. Mr Stuart
Norris landed a 10lber from the Long Stream at Rutherford and lost a further 2
fish.
Above Kelso 12 fish were reported, Between Kelso and
Coldstream 38 were reported and below Coldstream 0 were reported. With the best
fishing being on the Junction beat where 13 springers were landed. Hendersyde
and Upper North Wark picked away landed 6 each for the week.
53 Salmon and 3 Sea Trout were landed for the week with the best fish 19lb Salmon
caught on the Hendersyde beat.

On Upper North Wark, The beat is currently closed to the
public until there is a change in the restrictions. We had a go ourselves this
week and managed to land 6 springers. Fish were caught around the beat with 3
in the Snipe, 1 in the Island and 2 in the Dub. Any enquiries or booking

Lees Head Boatman Mr
Malcolm Campbell reports “Not a fish this week although we did lose a decent
one in Learmouth stream yesterday ( Friday). Conditions are near perfect but if
the fish won’t stay on the beat you have to be lucky to catch passing traffic.
1'10" and 46 degree today which is spot on for the Lees in spring. I don't
think there has been a fish caught below the Lees this spring on the main river
as springers are doing what springers do and bolt straight up to Kelso and beyond.
Once it warms up they'll lie in with us. Brief Trout rise at midday must
have been to small olives as no March browns seen. For a full report go to Lees

We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders Gunroom
in St Boswells. I would recommend for a rummage round which and find out from
the local staff what’s currently doing the damage on the river and lochs.
The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 3” and the water temperature is 46.
At this
stage in the report I would normally have my suggested beats to book for the
week ahead, however with all the Covid Restrictions in place and each beat
using their own guidelines I will refrain from suggestions until the river is
opened back up for fishing a bit more normally.
The
forecast this coming week, Tomorrow, it will be overcast with
showers persisting throughout the day, these turning more frequent in the
evening. Strong winds. Friday will be windy with a band of rain moving
through. Turning colder later with showers feeding in from the west afterwards,
these falling wintry over higher ground. Saturday will be largely dry with
bright spells, but there is a chance of the odd shower at times. Sunday will be
unsettled with wet and windy conditions.

Look at
what to bring for the week ahead, looking at the weather for this coming week the
water levels are dropping in towards low water levels floating line or
intermediate line with assorted poly leaders should suffice on most beats.
Black & Yellow, Tosh, Willie Gunn, Monkey and Posh Tosh are all capable to
tempting fish on 1” -1½” tubes, could be worth given a dressed fly a go in a
size 6. On the spinning front Rapala and 28gm Toby should bring results.
