River Tweed River Report Week Ending 1st September
The catches the last couple of weeks have
remained steady with the bulk of fish still been caught below Coldstream, as
would be anticipated in the current conditions. Warmer weather returned towards
the end of the week and the river dropped back to nearly summer level by the
end of the week. Ladykirk and Tillmouth continue to be the best performing
beats with 36 and 35 this week, Milne Graden sandwiched between these 2 beats
managed 10. Sprouston picked away and finished the week with 15.
The continued wait for some proper rain goes on
and not a great deal of rain on the forecast for this week, really need it to
come soon, if it comes to late in the season these fish down the bottom end
will be on the charge or the old story it will start raining and forget to
stop!
A wee bit action
on Dryburgh Upper beat this week with all old fish caught. Andrew Cairns playing a sea
trout in the Bridge pool, Will Shaw with an 8lb fish from boat pool and
Ginger B Cuthbert had a 7lb fish out the battery.
Mr Douglas Aitken providing the future of
salmon fishing on the Tweed at Norham Castle Syndicate water and Cornhill with
Team V Fly. Lady V landed a lovely fresh grilse on the fly with Brendan at
Cornhill, while young Tom hooked a cracking fish at Pedwell with his last cast.

Upper North Wark is situated approx 2 miles above
Coldstream and offers fishing on a daily basis for 2 rods, a 3rd rod can be
fished at the Head Ghillies discretion. 2 Full Time ghillies/boatmen are

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always
worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the

33 were reported caught above Kelso, 65 fish
were reported between Kelso and Coldstream and 100 reported below Coldstream.
On the River Till, no fish were reported
235 Salmon and 44 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 17lb Salmon
caught on the Birgham Dub Beat.
Middle Pavilion Head Ghillie Mr Mick Charlton reports “Hi
All, Well at last a decent month! A couple of small rises and what a difference
fish moving and getting caught.
The first of the month and the first fish, one
for Mr Jon Hopwood from the Beech Tree on a Silver stoat. Next up a Pair of sea
trout for Mr Niall Morrison one from Megs Hole and one from the Whirls The 7th
and a fish for Mr Paul Mickley from the Boat Shiel Again on the Silver stoat.
One for Mr Neil Sayers next this time from the Bridge pool. Making his long
awaited return to the beat Mr Andy
"Cleggy" Clegg got one this time from The Spit. The 17th and a good
day all round, One for Mr Tim Briggs from the Boat Shiel on an Intruder shrimp,
and a sea trout from Megs, one for Mr Conn Lloyd from the Spit on a Tay Wolf,
And 4 sea trout for Mr John Simmister all from Megs Hole. And the following day
another for Mr Conn Lloyd this time from the Boat Shiel on a Cascade.
The next fish was caught by Vitali kovalysin from
Russia on his first fishing trip to Scotland caught in the Whirls on a Tay
Raider. The following day and another good day 4 in a day 2 for Mr Richard
Mcghill, both from The Spit on an Ally shrimp.
One for Mr Gareth Bailey after only an hour of his
first go at salmon fishing from the Whirls on a Cascade, see it's easy this
Salmon fishing lark!!!
At last we have a bit of competition to Mr Tim

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Started off the week
fairly positively with 6 fish for 3 days. Mostly older salmon but as the week
went on and the river dropped in it went a bit quiet for us with only one more
fish landed. A wee grilse but still a not bad result with 7 for the week.”
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Caught a
fish or two in very difficult low water conditions, one very fresh little
grilse. Need some rain and water soon”
On Upper North Wark, another week of low water with the
level down to minus 5 inch on our gauge, badly needing rain soon. Flicking
through the diary the last time we fished with the water level over 1
st
was on the 21
st April. Not ideal conditions for us this season at
all. We are currently running a competition to win some days fishing on the

Lees Head Boatman Mr Malcolm Campbell reports “Getting
below summer level again, no fresh fish this week out of the 5 we've had.
Floating lines wee inter tips teamed with #10-#12 doubles and a Sunray/Collie
dug for a change. No rain on the forecast so next week is going to be a
challenge. ”
Milne Graden Head Boatman Mr Kevin Wright reports “No fresh
fish in the beat, catching old fish on Black and Red Frances. Got redds but no
sign of any sea trout and late on Saturday night the old coloured grilse were
in the shallows where the redds are”
Ladykirk
Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “Best week so far for this season
for us with a combined catch of 36, of which 34 were caught on Ladykirk Lower
and 2 on Ladykirk.
Notable catches included:
-7 fish for 74lb for father & son team Moss, with best for the week at 15lb
on Tuesday
-Day rod Ball finishing his 3 days with 3 grilse and 4 salmon, including 12 lb
liced.
As usual there was quite a few fish lost too and lots of plucks and pulls.
Sad to see quite a few damaged fish though, with injuries caused by seals,
dolphins and cormorants.
Even though catches went down towards the end of the week, we started to see
some very big fish”
Horncliffe
Head Ghillie Mr Tony Averill reports “August was a good
month finishing with 45 salmon and 1 sea trout. A good start to the week with 3
fish to 12lb then things slowed down with plenty of offers but nothing
sticking. We finished with a flurry 3 fish landed on Saturday and 2 fish
lost...There are plenty of fish about and some availability for this next week,
if these fish decide to get in the taking mood we will fill our boots, we are
fast approaching 100 fish for the season so come and join us for a day. There
will be a presentation for the 100th fish, the award is still to be decided but
it will be a good one”
Dave Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling
Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder still in need of rain.
Gauge dropped back to zero inches and no fish reported for the week.”
The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1” and the water temperature
is 58.
Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Tillmouth,
Ladykirk, and Horncliffe beats should have a chance of some action this week.
If you fancy the middle river the Dryburgh Beats will be worth a cast.
The
forecast this coming week, Tuesday will be mostly dry with
some patchy cloud and sunny spells, becoming cloudier overnight. Wednesday will
see a front bring some scattered sharp showers across Scotland, mainly in the
afternoon. On Thursday it will start out mostly dry but some afternoon showers
will drift in from the east.

With water levels still back to near summer levels and the temperature is
back into the 50s. Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover
most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 10 to 12 should
be the order of the day, in the deeper pools it might be worth a try with
little ¼” or ½” copper tubes. I would suggest are Copper Cascade, Black Frances,
Gledswood Shrimp, Kylie Shrimp, Red Frances and Sunray Shadow should bring
success. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala or Toby should bring
results.
