River Tweed
River Report Week Ending 8th June
With that little lift over the previous weekend that
freshened things up a bit and the fish continue to enter the river and this
week’s catch was the best week of the season so far. The water remained quite a
dark peaty colour most of the week with these little lifts stirring up the
algae and slime with made fishing a tad frustrating at times with having to
keep clearing the hooks. Another lift
going into Thursday really stirred up a lot of slime and coloured up the water
a bit which ruined the catches that day. With the lifts the Sea Trout numbers
really increase this week with 71 been reported including a super 13lber landed
at Sprouston by Mr Rob Ellis who also landed 8 salmon for his days. Storm
Miguel which looking promising that we were finally going to get that much
needed flood turned out to be a damp squid and apart from a few inches at
Hawick we were left very disappointed with what looked like a decent forecast
turned out to be nothing as all the wet forecasts have been recently they just
seem to keep missing the catchment. Hopefully the fish keep on coming and we
can look forward to another good week on the river.
Above Kelso 63 fish were reported, with the Floors
Beat 18, Rutherford 11 and Dryburgh Lower 11 having the best of the fishing, 9
of Dryburgh Lowers fish were caught on Saturday along with 2 Sea Trout. On
Boleside Mr Lee Conway and Mr Craig Drever kept their good run of catching fish
going by landing a fish each. On Tuesday Mr Jamie McCulloch landed his first of
the season from the Meetings Pool on the fly. Drygrange landed 3 on Saturday
the first of the season was caught by Mr Ray Armstrong, who was presented a
bottle of whisky by Mr Edward Dods. On Middle Pavilion Mr Willem Zuidema from
the Netherlands landed a nice fish. Lower Pavilion landed 4 on Monday with Mr
Dennis Robinson landing fish up to 15lbs.
Between Kelso and Coldstream 55 fish were reported
with Junction 13, Sprouston 16 and Hendersyde 7 and the Lees with 8 having the
best of the fishing. On the Junction Mr Paul Little, Mr Ian Kirk and Boatman
Gav Brown all had success. Fishing on Hendersyde Mr Will Haggas landed a lovely
fish while wife Clare of the fabulous Clare Haggas Fine Art and Design landed a
lovely Sea Trout from the Bushy on the Fly. Mr Richard Heath landed 2 fish from
the Upper Winter Cast on Upper Hendersyde.
Below Coldstream 17 fish were reported, a bit less
than recent weeks but the water conditions were a big grubby. Tillmouth and
Horncliffe landed 5 each which was the best of the fishing in the area.
On the River Till, a better week with 2 Salmon and
11 Sea Trout were reported, 6 Sea Trout at Redscar and Upper Tindal, 1 Sea
Trout on Lower Tindal and 2 Salmon and 4 Sea Trout on Tiptoe.
151 Salmon and 71 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 16lb Salmon caught
on the Boleside, Lower Birgham, Milne Graden beats.
Lower Birgham Head Boatman Mr Tom Davis reports “Was
surprised after the water that there weren’t more showing themselves. But did
manage 2 big fresh salmon and a 7lb sea trout on Tuesday. But apart from the
odd pull later on in the week that was all we got. Good to see the river have
another good week into June. Fingers crossed that it continues to fish well.”
Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “The week started off
nicely with both rods getting into fish and landing 5 fairly fresh salmon in 3
days. Cascade doing the biz but the wee rises of water later in the week made
it a bit more of a challenge but we managed 2 more salmon and a sea trout by
end of play on Sat which was a bonus considering the amount of rain we had.”
On Upper North Wark, we had a wee cast in-between doing
some wee jobs and managed to land a 10lb Salmon on the deadly Ghillie fly, 2
Sea Trout from the Mill Stream on a Newtyle Shrimp. Lost a salmon on the Rapala
and landed a big 5.5lb Brown Trout on the Rapala.
Berwick
and District Angling Association Secretary Dave Cowan reports “Whiteadder
dropped away later in the week to steady out at 9 inches on Saturday.
Good to see a few more sea trout about and two
reported on BDAA water. Conditions
should have been perfect for salmon but nothing banked. Prospects for Monday
should be good.”
We are blessed in this area to have some superb local fishing
tackle shops that are well worth a visit the superb well stocked Borders
Gunroom in St Boswells and Fin and Game in Kelso I would recommend for a
rummage round which and find out from the local staff what’s currently doing
the damage on the river and lochs.
After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip
to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented

The week
ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 1” and the water temperature is 54.
Looking
at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Boleside, Middle
Pavilion, Lower Pavilion, Ladykirk, Pedwell and Horncliffe beats should have a
chance of some action this week.
The
forecast this coming week, a dry and bright start with some
sunshine, but a few showers will start to spread from the east through the
afternoon. Some places will still stay largely dry tomorrow however. Tuesday
is expected to stay largely dry with occasional brighter spells but there will
be a cool northerly breeze. Wednesday will then likely turn wet as rain moves
in from the south, but some areas, particularly to the north, may stay dry
throughout. Thursday looks cloudy and wet, with widespread and persistent rain,
often heavy.

Look at
what to bring for the week aheads fishing, Floating lines with assorted poly
leaders should suffice on most places with Gledswood Shrimp, Sunray Shadow,
Underghillie and Cascade are all capable to tempting that springer on half inch
or dressed flies in size 8 and 10. On the spinning front the Carrot or Blue
Rapala, 18-20gm tobies should bring results.
