River Tweed River Report Week Ending 20th May
Finally after weeks of hoping for some rain we finally got a small lift of around 1ft 3 on Wednesday and it helped a lot going by the catches Thursday to Saturday. The rise had helped some of the older fish to move further up the system while there were good reports of long tailed licers been caught below Kelso. The week finished off with 119 Salmon and 19 Sea Trout which is the best week of the season so far. Was really good to see a good number of Sea Trout been reported this week.
Above Kelso, the rise has moved fish right up through the system. Boleside had 5 for the week inc a nice fish for Mr Jason Briggs, Middle Pavillion had 3 and 1 Sea Trout inc a nice fish for Mr Thor Jaccobsen from the Whirls, Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “ some Sea Trout starting to appear on the beat, We landed 1 Salmon and lost 2” Middle Mertoun have a decent week landed 10. The Makerstoun Beats had 3 with a few lost and seeing fish running through the beats. “1 very fresh and 2 river fish” Reports Head Boatman Colin Pringle.
Below Kelso 43 Salmon were reported with fish caught on most beats.
On the Junction, the Gribbin Party landed 7 for the week along with a 6lb Sea Trout, Lots of other fish lost. Successful rods Inc Mr Dick Seaman with a 7lber and Boatman Gavin Brown landing 3.
Upper Hendersyde Head Boatman Robert Jewels reports “Good end to the week after the rise with some nice fresh fish. 3 landed on Saturday morning all sea liced 10lbs, 10lbs & 5lbs all caught by Mr Dean Richards on a No 8 Cascade”
Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “7 for the week. worth losing a day to dirty water. Mostly fresh or liced fish plus lost as many. Can't blame the small flies this time cos we were back using the normal size 8 & 10. That's just the way it goes”
Sprouston picked away during the week landing 9 and losing a few. 6 of which were caught on Friday.
Mr Andy Britton and Mr Jim Reid fishing at Birgham Dub landed 4 between them. Lower Birgham had 1 and a sea trout while Upper North Wark had 1 and 2 sea trout.
Below Coldstream continues to produce in the lower water conditions with 34 Salmon reported. Ladykirk 10 and Tweedhill with 13 were the best performers. Ms Sally Gwatkin landed here 1st Salmon fishing on the Milne Graden Beat, while Mr Jonathan Lane landed 2 on Saturday from Ladykirk using ½” Ghillie Copper Tube Fly from www.taysalmonfly.co.uk. Was good to see new Horncliffe Head Boatman Mr Erin Hunter get off the mark on Saturday.
Mr Douglas Aitken fishing at Ladykirk reports “We fished Wednesday and then Jamie was on Saturday. The water was low start of the week and the rise moved the fish that were in Tweedhill but they were not hanging about. Wednesday morning river was clear and falling in and all the pools were fishing well but we saw only one fish in the long cairn and Niall Morrison had one just before the cairn. Silver but had been in for a while. Two other fish caught in the morning from Westford. The colour hit around 2pm and the river went grey black from road wash and that was that. Nothing on Thursday due to the colour and then one Friday and 3 Saturday. Not many fish seen so waiting for numbers to build up again. We saw a mixture of fresh and coloured fish running the cauld at upper mertoun and landed two on Friday and lost one one Saturday. Friend fishing at Sprouston on Friday had a great day with 6 most fresh with sea lice but then only one on the Saturday. I don't think that there are huge numbers of fresh fish coming in and the rise of water on Wednesday has moved what was in the bottom beats to the middle beats. Unsettled weather at the start of next week will keep them on the move?”
The week ended with the level at Sprouston 3” and the water temperature is 53.
Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest West Learmouth, Pedwell, Horncliffe and Tweedhill beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.
The forecast looks like we are going to have some nice hot and settled weather this coming week with light winds from the south to south west. Not ideal fishing conditions but hopefully these sea liced fish keep coming into the river.
Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10 should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Gledswood Shrimp, Ghillie, Underghillie, Girnal Shrimp and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Black/Gold Rapala Tobies in 12gm – 20gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
